Product Information

  • Overview

The LaCie 2big Thunderbolt Series hard drive offers transfer rates of up to 327 MB/s*. That means backups take a fraction of the time, letting you back up more frequently. If you're a photographer using Aperture, you'll notice significantly more responsive photo library browsing. And if you rely on Final Cut Pro X or other professional software, you can even stream multiple HD video streams directly from the drive.

    RAID for speed or security

Use Disk Utility on your Mac OS to configure the 2big Thunderbolt Series into a RAID array that suits your needs. It's possible to set it up as a mirrored RAID set (RAID 1), which provides data protection if one disk fails. Thanks to its removable disks, you can simply replace a disk, with zero data loss and no work interruption.

Alternatively, configure it as a striped RAID set (RAID 0) to maximize speed and capacity for large file storage and fast transfers. It even supports JBOD, which lets you assign each disk to a specific data storage task.

    Daisy chain to multiply options

Thunderbolt technology is the most flexible interface ever created. With dual Thunderbolt ports on the 2big, you can daisy chain up to six Thunderbolt peripherals together. That means you don't need to buy a hub to connect multiple devices to a single Thunderbolt port on your Mac. Daisy chaining multiple 2bigs can also push overall performance to more than 670MB/s* for your most data-intensive tasks. Thunderbolt technology is also mini-DisplayPort compatible.

    Aluminum reliability and security

The 2big's advanced dual cooling system ensures long-term reliability by preventing overheating. Its solid-aluminum casing provides 60% more surface area, which diverts and dissipates heat more efficiently. In addition, its thermo-regulated fan turns on and off according to internal temperature. For more energy savings, the front power button even lets you turn off the product without breaking a daisy chain connection.

    About Thunderbolt

Thunderbolt is a revolutionary I/O technology that supports high-resolution displays and high-performance data devices via one simple port and a cable that carries both DisplayPort and PCI Express data. And it’s standard on every Mac.

PCI Express is the technology that links all the high-performance components in a Mac. And it’s built into Thunderbolt, which means you can get PCI Express speed outside the box.

Thunderbolt gives you up to 10 Gbps in both directions, allowing for super-fast data transfer between peripherals. You also have enough bandwidth to daisy-chain multiple high-speed devices without using a hub or switch.

Thunderbolt also provides double the power of USB 3.0, delivering 10 watts to peripherals for improved performance on the go.

The build quality of the enclosure is far above the WD MyBook stuff - really impressive aluminum housing and surprisingly heavy. It is very quiet as well, a concern I had prior to purchasing. I have it sitting on top of my Klipsch subwoofer under the desk and I cannot hear it. The included HDD's are also very quiet in that I cannot hear head seek noises.

Be aware that this is not a hardware RAID device - the computer sees 2 drives over the TB connection (similar to an eSATA port multiplier) and you use OS X Disk Utility to either leave it as JBOD or create a RAID 1 or RAID 0 volume.

    Highly recommended.

Works great with my Macbook Pro based editing suite. I do fast turn around jobs quite often and this drive delivers the speed and capacity along with the RAID1 protection for doing small to medium HD projects. This really is a quality product, and I'll definitely recommend it to anyone who needs good speed, and reliability.

I've had this product for about 90 days and found the power supply connector on the housing to be defective in the last 45 days. The unit only works when there is pressure applied to the power adapter that connects to the housing. Lacie support suggested I go out and purchase an equivalent power adapter for the unit (at my own cost) to rule out that the power adapter wasn't the issue. I did this and determined that the issue is a defective connector on the housing.

Faced with the inconvenience of backing up my drives, erasing data on the Lacie drives and sending the entire unit back for repair (again at my own cost) I asked the manufacturer if there was an option to get a replacement housing unit first so I could maintain possession of the original drives and my data. Apparently replacement is not covered under the standard warranty and I have to send them the entire unit in for repair. I am in the process of doing this and will provide an update as to the progress.

If you do buy this drive I recommend you open it and ensure it is in good working order within Apple's return period. I made the mistake of purchasing this in December, not setting it up until January and later discovering there was an issue with the hardware.

If this were an Apple manufactured product the support would be much better.
