  • Overview

    Universal connectivity

With both USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt interfaces, the LaCie d2 is a perfect match for your Mac. And because USB 3.0 is backwards compatible, you can connect it to any standard computer on the planet.

    No-compromise speed

Get lightning-fast transfer speeds thanks to the USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt ports. It performs up to 180 MB/s*—twice as fast as FireWire 800 and more than four times as fast as USB 2.0. Back up and transfer mountains of data in a fraction of the time. Enjoy noticeably more responsive photo library browsing. Save time and get better performance when using A/V editing tools.

    Advanced cooling for long-term reliability

Since effective cooling is a critical factor in hard disk reliability, LaCie completely redesigned its d2's cooling system. The solid aluminum casing provides 60% more surface area than flat designs, diverting and dissipating heat more efficiently. Its innovative design means it stays cool without requiring a noise-producing fan. It also has more and larger air holes to facilitate airflow. This efficient and silent cooling system is perfect for even the most noise-sensitive creative environments.

    Designed for convenience

With its space-saving form, you can stand the LaCie d2 drive alone vertically, stack multiple products horizontally, or install it in a 19-inch rack with a kit from LaCie. It also features email alerts, so you can monitor your device before potential problems escalate.

    Support when you need it

Your LaCie d2 is protected by a three-year limited warranty. It includes comprehensive, complimentary web-based resources, expert in-house technical support, and worldwide repair/replacement coverage.

Ratings & Reviews

  • Great Thunderbolt HD

    5.0 out of 5 stars

This works well as a Time Machine backup disk or as a scratch disk for video editing. The transfer speeds are great. If you want faster read/write times then grab something with flash storage instead, but for the average consumer this should work fine.

I like that it spins down and sleeps when the computer does, and particularly like that it also has a dedicated on/off switch unlike some other drives.

It looks great paired up with an iMac. The d2 line has rock solid performance and reliability and this seems to continue that trend.

  • Does its job

    4.0 out of 5 stars

Under Snow Leopard, Lion and Mt Lion this thunderbolt device sleeps with the system . Awakens with the system and copy speeds rang e between 130 megs/sec to 160.

Compared to the Little Big Disk it takes a few seconds to wind up after awake but no big deal. Does not slow the shutdown time of the system.

Only drawback is the one thunderbolt port, so must place at the end of the daisy chain.

  • Very Quiet

    5.0 out of 5 stars

    Mine is very quiet!

As there is no fan inside, the only noise I hear is from the spinning drive, and the head seeking during ac cess.

No whining at all. A fine addition to my desktop.

  • Fast, Quiet, Well Built

    5.0 out of 5 stars

I have one of these for my video projects. It's very fast and works well with everything I've put it though. It worked right out o f the box. It's quiet and matches perfectly with my new MacBook Pro. LaCie did a great job in my opinion!

  • Excellent Drive - Fast and Quiet

    5.0 out of 5 stars

This drive was very easy to setup. All I had to do was connect it with the included Thunderbolt cable to my iMac, and just follow the setup utility. This drive is now my new best friend. It hasn't skipped a beat since I configured it. It's quiet and has excellent speeds.

  • Noisy Noisy Noisy

    2.0 out of 5 stars

One of the things I like about my iMac is that it's silent. This drive ruins it. My favorite thing about this drive is when it goe s to sleep. No more noise. It does include a Thunderbolt cable, which is nice. Too bad it's so short, meaning I can't place it around the corner and in my closet where just maybe I might not be able to hear it anymore. Did I mention it was noisy?

  • Answer

Yes, and no. It mostly depends on your HD compression, or lack thereof. For example, in the high-en d professional arena, uncompressed 1080i @ 29.97 fps (59.94 fields per second) video will never play consistently in real time from this drive, regardless of the fast connection. That's why most use multi-spindle raid drives configured so that the data from each video frame is divided up and recorded across several drives at once, increasing the bandwidth (your limitation was the 2.0 USB bandwidth). Conversely, in the less demanding home-based and pro-sumer arenas, various HD compressions (H264, Apple ProRes, DNxHD, etc.) could yield very satisfying results on this drive - based, however, on several factors: long GOP compression vs short, 8 bit vs 10 bit, video frame rates, data rates, etc.). Finally, another big factor is whether you are performing fades, video layering, or other transitional effects, from one video clip to another, obviously because this drive will have to buffer heavily and play two or more streams of HD video at once. Bottom line: choose the right HD compression and this drive will run steady. If you need more quality, you'll need more bandwidth (drives).
