Overview
The LaCie Little Big Disk Thunderbolt Series hard drives feature a preconfigured RAID0 striped set with SSDs through the 10 Gbit/s Thunderbolt interface, enabling them to deliver astonishing transfer rates. SATA III SSDs deliver 35% more speed than the previous generation, achieving rates up to 635 MB/s*. So you can acquire, edit, and play back multiple uncompressed A/V streams directly from the drive with ultimate ease and portability
You can even daisy chain multiple LaCie Little Big Disks together to increase overall transfer rates. The more drives in the chain, the higher the performance. Daisy chain two LaCie Little Big Disks to maximize Thunderbolt interface capabilities and reach transfer rates of around 800 MB/s.
RAID for speed or security
Use Disk Utility on your Mac OS to configure the LaCie Little Big Disk into a RAID array that suits your needs. It's possible to set it up as a mirrored RAID set (RAID 1), which provides data protection if one disk fails. Alternatively, configure it as a striped RAID set (RAID 0) to maximize speed and capacity for large file storage and fast transfers.
Next-generation interface
Beyond performance, Thunderbolt technology is the most flexible interface ever created. Each cable provides two channels with 10 Gb/s bandwidth for both uplink and downlink. This means that you can push and pull video and data both ways without compromising bandwidth. As a result, you can better streamline your life at home and in the office. Simplify connections between your A/V devices and computer peripherals by daisy chaining them all together so you only need a single port on your MacBook. It's even backward compatible with Mini DisplayPort .
Featherweight powerhouse
The LaCie Little Big Disk is a portable powerhouse that fits in the palm of your hand. It features its own cooling system and can be connected to displays and MacBooks. So it's great for presenting work such as digital photo libraries to clients. Away from the studio, videographers can simply download footage directly from a compatible camera and start the editing process in the field. The SSD version will be popular with post-production teams thanks to its support for multiple uncompressed video streams and multichannel audio.
Aluminum reliability and security
Designed by Neil Poulton, the case's resilient aluminum armor protects the data inside whether the Little Big Disk is in the field or in transit. Its unique heat sink design provides 60% more surface area, which draws heat away from the internal components, keeping it cool and safe at all times. Plus the front power button allows you to turn off the Little Big Disk and save energy without breaking a daisy chain.

Incredible!!
Clearly amazing on speeds namely when editing several streams at a time and when transfering data between my MBP retina display an d the big disk : i just have the feeling we finally got into the 21 st centery concerning data transfer...
The price is amazing too since Lacie did not put some well known failing SSD but some Micron ones!

Does not mount flawless under Mountain Lion
Speed is great, but the disk is noisy.
Really annoying is that the drive does not mount flawless under Mountain Lion. I am using it as one disk with two Raid slices.
Once ejected I have to plug in the disk twice to get it mounted. Apple and LaCie have to check this. …- Written by C G W V from Den Haag

Works great
Worked straight out of the box, and looks fantastic. Took me very little time to set up and see the jump in speeds. I don't think I could go back to old transfer speeds after having used this drive, this is just amazing. Great product, highly recommend it! …

Main drive for 2012 iMac?
- Asked by Anthony T from San Francisco

Answer
Alexander thanks for your reply.
Funny but I did decide on the Mercury Helios/Accelsior and it is very fast. It's not as fast as I was imagining (for $800) and I think that has to do with latency with Thunderbolt as I think you were suggesting- sustained reads and rights get a blazing 700 mbps so yes the target case is someone who has to do fast transfers and this is certainly blazing for that.
So that's 10 times faster than the stock HDD which gets in the 60s but Application loading and booting are definitely not 10 times faster but probably closer to 4 times faster (time to login screen went from one minute to fifteen seconds). I do agree now that the internal one would likely be faster but still it's a $1300 option.
The Mercury Helios is noisy...not super noisy by any means (I would have said really quiet before I owned my iMac) but when you're talking about an addition to a whisper quiet iMac it may be a concern. I got a 2 m thunderbolt cable so I may see about putting it a bit away off my desk. I'm also going to look into replacing the stock Helios fan with a super quiet fan. …- Answered by Anthony T from Cary

can you replace the hard dive on the new laCie 1tb salta 111 ssd thunderbolt little big disk hard drive.
- Asked by James S from Beverly

Answer
There is no HDD inside this product. For this product there are 2 500GB SSD devices inside, and the Apple Disk Utility formats these devices to act as one large 1TB drive in a RAID-0 configuration.
Perhaps you are thinking of the other 1TB or 2TB HDD configurations of this product which are also available at the Apple Store. …- Answered by Mike M from Beaverton
