4GB Not Suitable for Time Machine

This causes a problem wi These drives spin down when not active, even when you have System Preferencs set to not let that happen. This causes a problem with both Spotlight and Time Machine. The first Time Machine backup works fine, but the second fails because the drive doesn't spin up before Time Machine times out on it. And more backups always fail because Spotlight has hung on the device at the same time. You have to reboot to clear this.
I contacted G-Technology and they told me to buy software that keeps the drive spinning by constantly using it, even when it isn't needed. There is no settings or jumpers you can change to resolve this. There are a couple of posts on the Apple Support Forums that discuss this as well.
I give it three stars because its an otherwise usable drive for normal use when you're sitting at the machine. But don't buy this if all you want it to do it Time Machine backups. …

I have kept it running constantly for three months straight, as i use it connected to my airport extreme as a network media server...it stays cool, has never froze, the fan is quiet, i cannot find a single flaw with this drive..i will definately be buying more to replace my aging LaCie drives! …

The downside of the G is the noise of the fan. It isn't as loud as say, a PC Fan, but it is by far the loudest part of my system.
If you are an audiophile or have a small home studio for recording, you will likely find yourself turning it off so the fan doesn't engage while you work on projects or even listen to music. It is really disappointing, since it is so highly engineered.
There is also a bright white light that flashes when the drive is engaging. It turns my room into a disco if all the lights are off.
I'll keep it because I have faith that it is more reliable than other products because of its robust construction, and hope the little extra noise is worth it. …

I wouldn't say it is perfect but it is darn good

It does spin down when not used so there is a typical delay upon wake up. It is quiet and stays cool even with continuous use. I have several hundred ripped DVD movies stored on it and I stream them via Apple TV and it works flawless for this, I also use it for Time Capsule and it also works flawless in that application.
Why 4 stars and not 5? The wake up could be smoother. …

Lots of potential; poor implementation

This drive looks really nice and its built out of really nice materials. So before you plug it in; you'd think its pretty good so far.... But then once you start using it; you'll notice that it ISN'T full copyable with Time Machine. The drive goes to sleep and takes too long to wake up and by that time; TM has timed out and that particular backup will fail and fail and fail until you unmount the device, turn it off and on and it remounts. TM will work a few times after than and then it'll go back to not working with TM.
My latest misfortune with this device is that I went to plug it in via USB3 instead of FW and on 2 different Macs it says the drive isn't recognizable and needs to be initialized. Even on the same computer with FW it will work; but not USB.
Definitely sloppy sloppy implementation on the hardware software side mar an otherwise nice drive …

I have been using them for over 6 months now and always have constant "Disk not Ejected Properly" messages whenever I have to transfer medium to large size files. Even worse this happens when using Time Machine Backup, making these drives completely unreliable.
To be fair I do not know if the problem is with these drives or with all Firewire drives. I have tried these drives on 2 other macs and experience the same problems.
To use these drives at all I have to copy files in small batches and then watch until the copy process sends without errors to know for sure that the transfer was successful. 50% of the time an error pops up forcing me to restart the process again. Total waste of time.
The Apple Time Capsules (Apple Routers with built-in hard drives), while slower in my experience, work much better.
The best possible solution for storage is internal drives. This is an expensive option on iMacs but a cheap and DIY project for Mac Pro's. …

yes this drive is perfect for Final Cut Pro X. I use it and another smaller G drive unit (750 gig).
When you are importing media, FCPX will give you the option of which drive to use. It saves original, transcoded media and keeps all your projects neatly in folders just like it would on your Mac Hard Drive.
If you choose to import to the drive, FCPX will automatically save all future projects the same destination providing you have the unit powered on. It's a very reliable machine :) …
