The LaCie 2big Thunderbolt Series hard drive offers transfer rates of up to 327 MB/s*. That means backups take a fraction of the time, letting you back up more frequently. If you're a photographer using Aperture, you'll notice significantly more responsive photo library browsing. And if you rely on Final Cut Pro X or other professional software, you can even stream multiple HD video streams directly from the drive.

RAID for speed or security

Use Disk Utility on your Mac OS to configure the 2big Thunderbolt Series into a RAID array that suits your needs. It's possible to set it up as a mirrored RAID set (RAID 1), which provides data protection if one disk fails. Thanks to its removable disks, you can simply replace a disk, with zero data loss and no work interruption.

Alternatively, configure it as a striped RAID set (RAID 0) to maximize speed and capacity for large file storage and fast transfers. It even supports JBOD, which lets you assign each disk to a specific data storage task.

Daisy chain to multiply options

Thunderbolt technology is the most flexible interface ever created. With dual Thunderbolt ports on the 2big, you can daisy chain up to six Thunderbolt peripherals together. That means you don't need to buy a hub to connect multiple devices to a single Thunderbolt port on your Mac. Daisy chaining multiple 2bigs can also push overall performance to more than 670MB/s* for your most data-intensive tasks. Thunderbolt technology is also mini-DisplayPort compatible.

Aluminum reliability and security

The 2big's advanced dual cooling system ensures long-term reliability by preventing overheating. Its solid-aluminum casing provides 60% more surface area, which diverts and dissipates heat more efficiently. In addition, its thermo-regulated fan turns on and off according to internal temperature.     Good Drive

    I'm shooting a documentary at the moment and a lot of it uses archival footage. I've been using this drive to edit video and to backup this project (that's many hours of video in total). I switched it to Raid1, which was rather straightforward. The speeds are excellent. The drive is also good for running high resolution video renders. It's also nice that Thunderbolt cable is included with the package. …More

    Be careful buying this product

    Be very careful if buying this product. I purchased a 4TB 2big unit at Christmas - have only just been able to start using it because of problems.

    After installing unit discovered it made a random loud 'chirping/clicking' noise, not the sort of sound you like to hear from very expensive premium external HDD unit!

    Contacted LaCie, I ended up having two replacements, all units exhibited same sound. Finally I found out the Seagate drives used required a firmware update (which had been officially released by Seagate many months before). To do the update (which I did myself in the end) I had to wipe the drives to remove RAID, take them out of unit, attach them directly to a Windows machine and update firmware.

    During this whole process I had occasion to look at real specifications of the units via Mac system information. The AHCI controllers are from vendor 'Unknown' with Negotiated Link Speed of 3 Gigabit which is half what SATA revision 3 and the HDDs are capable of. Also the version of AHCI is only 1.19 when the current version (released in October 2010) is 1.30.

    The unit is working now, but I have not been impressed by the experience and I am annoyed about the use of lower specced controller. After all it is supposed to be a premium product.     …More
