Excellent quality and sound
These are truly spectacular monitor speakers for a small room or low listening levels. Comparable to the Adam A3x in quality and o verall sound, I just preferred these. I wouldn't use these to mix bass heavy music without the matching sub, but that can only be expected from a 4 inch speaker.

Very high quality build, clear manual and immaculate sound quality
Compact size makes them suitable for a small room
Front ported, so they can be placed close to a wall
Front power switch so they can be turned off to save power simply
Negatives;
No 1/4 inch inputs

These are professional studio monitors, and very good entry ones at that, they're not cheap PC speak ers or designed to make dodgy recordings sound great. To get the best out of them, you will want your Mac to be connected to an external DAC (digital to analog converter), either via USB or the headphone-out which doubles as a digital out; spdif/optical toslink to be precise. You would then connect the Focals either via unbalanced RCA cables, or balanced XLR if your DAC supports it. Some examples would be the Apogee Duet or DAC Magic for entry level. You don't need amplification because these are active not passive speakers. …
