Product Information

  • Overview

    The Focal CMS 40 offers superior acoustic integration for a small room, while delivering ultra-realistic voicing. It lets you hear accurately from as close as 16 inches, even in the least-forgiving surroundings—for example, near reverberating surfaces. The CMS 40 is the perfect tool for post-production and home studios. And even in larger studios, it's excellent as a second monitoring system for quickly checking how the mix translates onto smaller speakers.

Ratings & Reviews

  • Excellent quality and sound

    4.0 out of 5 stars

    These are truly spectacular monitor speakers for a small room or low listening levels. Comparable to the Adam A3x in quality and o verall sound, I just preferred these. I wouldn't use these to mix bass heavy music without the matching sub, but that can only be expected from a 4 inch speaker.

    Positives:
    Very high quality build, clear manual and immaculate sound quality
    Compact size makes them suitable for a small room
    Front ported, so they can be placed close to a wall
    Front power switch so they can be turned off to save power simply

    Negatives;
    No 1/4 inch inputs
    Physics prevent a 4 inch woofer going below about 60Hz

  • Fantastic speakers, but you can get them cheaper than here

    These are the best in their class, and could replace quite serious monitors that are larger & more expensive. But shop around as you can knock $200 off this price without trying.

    Simply the more natural sounding monitors I've heared under 700£ a pair. Powerful enough. Compact, easy to position even in my tin y room.

    These are professional studio monitors, and very good entry ones at that, they're not cheap PC speak ers or designed to make dodgy recordings sound great. To get the best out of them, you will want your Mac to be connected to an external DAC (digital to analog converter), either via USB or the headphone-out which doubles as a digital out; spdif/optical toslink to be precise. You would then connect the Focals either via unbalanced RCA cables, or balanced XLR if your DAC supports it. Some examples would be the Apogee Duet or DAC Magic for entry level. You don't need amplification because these are active not passive speakers.
