Works with Military CAC (Air Force)

    • Written by from VALDOSTA

Opened from mail, and used immediately to log into the portal. No software needed with OS X. Tested on vMPF and all. I read lots of reviews and was skeptical if it would work or not. I'm very satisfied with it so far. More

Difference in the ID card types

    • Written by from Woodbridge

I bought the CAC reader and couldn't get it to work with the Oberthur brand ID card. I went this morning and got a new CAC, the GEMAL TO TOPDL GX4 and it works fine. So, there's obviously a difference in the type of CAC that you receive. I like it now that it works. More

This is just the hardware device (smart card reader) like you would purchase other readers to access your CAC on any platform. This device allows the physical card to be accessed by software running on the computer via the USB port. This reader is CCID compliant and can be used on any platform.

Any software (Native in the OS -OR- from third-party providers) would be required to use the certificates & private keys on the card to perform tasks such as signing forms as you asked. You have several options available to you both from Open Source and Commercial resources.

  • Answer

No. This device is for a "Smart Card" similar in form factor to your Bank Card or Credit Card, but with a hardware "chip" exposed on one side. Smart Cards are used for various User Authentication scenarios like login on a computer, digitally signing/decrypting email messages and accessing PK-enabled websites.

You are looking for a "Media Reader" for accessing your photos on an XD photo card.

  • Answer

No, unfortunately it will not work, as there are specific device related drivers and depending on what you are attempting to access, some software that might have to be installed in order for the reader to work. As such, it is limited to standard desktop operating systems for the time being. More
