    Exceeded my expectations!!!

    • Written by from Barrie

Firstly, I'll say this: I've never written a review in my life. For some strange reason, I was driving home tonight and felt compelled to do this. I'm so completely satisfied with this product, I wanted to share it with the world. While it may not be for everyone, it meets my needs. I was looking for a great set of over-the-head headphones which would offer me portability, durability, a microphone with "smart remote", and, oh ya, great sound!!! I JUST returned a set of "Beats" by Dr. Dre because they were incredibly fragile, and on several occasions, the ear-cup fell off in my hand as I was putting them on or taking them off. It was very awkward to reassemble them, which I should not have had to do anyway. Had I read the reviews prior to buying them, I never would have made the purchase. I realize this is not a review of the Dr. Dre's, however, I'm comparing from my experience.

Upon initially picking-up my Sennheiser PX 100-IIi package at my local UPS depot, I initially took note of the excellent packaging. (Sure, the Dr. Dre's had great packaging too, so this observation carries little merit, but I thought I'd mention it anyway). They were packaged in clear plastic, in the "folded" position, which allowed me to get a very clear idea of how portable they would actually be when traveling. I feel this would be even more important at a retailer, where a potential buyer could see them through the packaging.

One of the things that ANYONE considering buying over-the-ear headphones needs to consider is the possibility that it can be a very strange feeling when you can't hear yourself speak when having a phone conversation while wearing them properly. This was the case with myself and the Dr. Dre's. This was NOT as prevalent with the Sennheiser's as I am able to carry on a very comfortable conversation while wearing them. I found that with the Dr. Dre's, I had to slip one of the ear-cups off of one ear while having a conversation on the phone, otherwise it was difficult to judge my own speaking volume. That said, I imagine that the noise-canceling capabilities would be better with the Dr. Dre's, and certainly a consideration for someone using their headphones in a noisy environment, or in an environment where they might object to someone hearing what they're listening too. This is RARELY the case with myself, but worthy of mention.

The sound? Great!!! I'm not an audiophile, however, I am a casual listener of music, as well, I often use my laptop computer to view online videos / programs which contain audio. These are just fantastic for such occasions.

At less than half the price of the Dr. Dre's, I'm ecstatic!

    typical PX100 quality

    • Written by from Mississippi state

I have a pair of the original PX100s (with the two cords and the hard case). When I saw that they had a version with a remote/mic, I jumped at the chance to get them because I find the sound quality of my previous PX100s all kinds of awesome.

The remote/mic is pretty high up on the cord so it'll take me a while to memorize where it's located. But it should mean that the mic picks up your voice well. The buttons work as expected, vol up/down and push the middle button once to pause, twice to advance a track and three times to go back a track. (I"m still trying to perfect the 3 button push though)

Now, sound wise, these seem to have more bass than my previous PX00s. I think that changed with the move to the PX100 II, so I imagine that these sound the same as the IIs. But I can't say for sure though since I never bought those.

As an FYI, the remote does not work on anything other than an iPod/iPhone (no idea about any other mobile). On my desktop that runs iTunes, it does nothing. So it's just a good pair of headphones when you're listening on anything other than your iPod/iPhone. Doesn't bother me though because I wasn't looking for that. I just wanted the same awesome sound quality with the ability to control my iPhone. These do that perfectly.

FWIW, I literally have *just* received these. I've used my other PX100s almost daily for at least 3 years now and they're holding up well. I expect the same of these.

    blown away

    • Written by from Richardson

I don't ever write a review, but just got these today, and I am blown away. I needed something to replace my earbuds, I tried bluetooth sets, but no one could ever hear me. I wanted something that did not block out external sound, because people tend to sneak up on me at work, and it's nice to hear them coming. On my first call, I could not believe how much better everyone sounded, and no complaints about me being heard. I then tried out some music, can't believe all that I was missing.

The buttons work with my iPhone 4 and my iPad, so I am very happy.

Great Headphones, Not So Great Mic

    • Written by from Seattle

The headphones themselves are quintessential Sennheiser: excellent sound, deep range. The mic, on the other hand, makes you sound like you're in a tunnel, and when using them for a phone call, it does cut in & out--not so great. More

    Nice!

    • Written by from Everett

I see MUCH more expensive headphones available so I'm thinking price Vs Performance is quite good for the PX 100-IIi. I consider myself an audiophile so I wouldn't rate the sound as great, but they are primarily for use with my Ipod so it doesn't really make sense to derate them for their lack of bright, clear highs, but I plugged them into my receiver while playing a CD and they really sound pretty good. They are a little heavy on the bass, but it is clean and smooth; very much so, and for a mobile application, that can be a very good thing.

There are two complaints I have about the original ear buds that came with my Touch (other than the poor quality sound): they have to be "installed" in the ear just right or they are imbalanced with one side being louder and bassier. The other is that they get very uncomfortable, jammed in my ears. The over-the-ear design solves both of those issues AND lets me hear the low bass that I never heard with the ear buds without being (overly) sensitive to how they happen to be placed over my ears. Also, they let in the ambient sounds which is important when I'm riding my bike in traffic (my Apple ear buds have "vents" that do this by design, which is a good feature).

These aren't ear buds; they won't wad up and stuff in a shirt pocket, but the folding feature is really very cool, and they come with a nice little carrying case so a coat pocket is quite comfortable. Also, since they have a headband you can't really wear them with a hat, so I tore apart some cheap earmuffs and wrapped the padding around the ear pieces and Voila! I have great sounding ear muffs! Glad I bought them!

    Great Buy

    • Written by from Shaunavon

The PX 100-IIi are everything I wanted for a good sounding portable set of headphones for my iPhone 4. They are nice and light, very comfortable and fold fairly quick and easily for transport.

I have only played with them for a short time with rock, blues, alternative music and a few podcasts. The sound quality is good however I find it a little on the bassy side with the mids and highs a little on the light side. A little more mid range and I probably would have given it 5 stars.

They are open headphones which do leak sound both ways which was the main feature I was looking for. The open design still allows you to hear what's going on around you. This is good when out for walks although not so good if you are in louder environments.

The inline remote does work just fine with the iPhone 4 for changing tracks however it is not covered in it's "Quick Guide". Multiple clicks for skipping ahead and back does take practice though, but I have that issue with all the other inline remotes including the one on Apple's ear buds.
