Product Information

  • Overview

NeatDesk for Mac is the high-speed desktop scanner and digital filing system that will quickly turn all the paper on your desk into organized, digital files. More than just a great scanner, NeatDesk also includes patented NeatWorks for Mac software to identify and extract key information from your paper files, then automatically organize it in the easy-to-use database.

    Lightning-fast scanning

The award-winning ADF (automatic document feeder) scanner provides a central "inbox" for all the paper that normally clutters your workspace. Its unique paper input tray allows you to insert up to 10 receipts, 10 business cards and 10 full-size documents, and scan them all in a single batch. Or remove the tray to scan up to 50 letter-size pages at once. You can even perform double-sided scanning in a single pass.

    NeatWorks for Mac software

Once your paper is digitized, NeatWorks for Mac uses "Intelligent Text Recognition" technology to extract key data from your documents and populate key fields automatically in this robust digital filing system.

    Capture and retrieve details quickly

NeatWorks software uses OCR and patented parsing technology to identify and save key information. On receipts, it looks for the date, vendor, amount and sales tax. On business cards, it collects all of the contact information. And on documents, it saves the printed text in searchable PDF format.

The software is way behind the windows version, one side of the duplex scanning is 50% quality of the other, post-processing of the image is not acceptable (grainy, no anti-aliasing), and the software is deadly slow.

The scanner had to be replaced under warranty in less than 6 months because it inexplicably snatched up to 25 pages of paper at a time when scanning. The software constantly crashes for no explicable reason. This same thing has happened though several revisions of their software. Their only offered solution is to create new libraries and start over! This is of course entirely unacceptable because they never update the software to correct the problem.

Product support never responds appropriately and never explains why the software crashes. Moreover, the company has now discontinued phone support completely and the only way to communicate with them is through e-mail that is also terrible as far as quick, responsive problem resolution.

Do not buy this scanner or software if you expect good customer service, reliability or functionality.

Bought the scanner in 2012. OK to keep receipts which fade away over time. Good organization in the system. HOWEVER while scanning Bought the scanner in 2012. OK to keep receipts which fade away over time. Good organization in the system. HOWEVER while scanning receipts you really have to pay attention since you will have to constantly or almost constantly check date, amount and vendor. I do not have daily receipts so it works for me, but if you are a big business with lots of receipts I do not recommend at all.

The hardware is decent enough, but I only say that because I've resigned myself to the turn-scanner-off-and-on-and-off-and-on-whil The hardware is decent enough, but I only say that because I've resigned myself to the turn-scanner-off-and-on-and-off-and-on-while-the-app-is-open-or-maybe-closed dance. Scanning in multiple receipts through the feeder is a nice idea, but requires too much manual intervention to be relied upon. Same goes for OCR- it's relatively accurate most of the time, but for my record keeping, I need 100% accuracy. So, once again, manual intervention is required if you want to rely on it.

The biggest problem, however, is that the software is buggy and Neat doesn't seem to have any interest in updating it, at least for the Mac (it's been over a year since the last release). They seem to be focused exclusively on their silly cloud subscription service and letting the rest of it wither on the vine.

Over those two+ years, I scanned in all my paid bills, etc. Recently, the scanner/software malfunctioned and started scanning every page as a separate document, always double-sided all scans and every document showed up as pink. When I downloaded the software update (thinking it would help), the whole thing quit working completely!!! I have 50% of 2014 scanned and lost. NeatDesk's response was that they did not support my OS so could not help me. What a mess!
