Can Apple TV use a wireless network for WiFi?
I have the HDMI cable to the Apple TV and television. Will AppleTV recognize a wireless Wifi or does it need an ethernet cable to the Airport?

Yes, you can use your Apple TV over your existing wireless WiFi network. When you set it up the Apple TV will ask to connect to your WiFi network. You'll select the SSID for your network and enter you password.
If it is easy to connect your Apple TV to your network using Ethernet, do that. Some houses have Ethernet wired to the living room where the cable connections for the TV are. Other homes have the Internet modem and router connected behind the TV so the router is close to where the Apple TV is. In these cases, use Ethernet to connect your Apple TV to your network. An Ethernet or wired connection is always faster and more reliable than a wireless connection.
If it would take stringing Ethernet cable across the house, then it isn't worth it. Just use the built in WiFi of the Apple TV. The WiFi won't be the limiting factor in using your Apple TV. It will be limited by your Internet Service provider.
If you have a long house, like a ranch style, and your router is on the opposite side of the house from the TV, consider getting a wireless repeater or extender. An AirPort Express can be configured to work as a repeater. You can put this in the middle of the house and it will create a bridge between the router on one side of the house and the Apple TV on the other side of the house. You can test the WiFi signal strength with your laptop or smartphone near where the TV is. If you only have one bar in this location, you may want to consider a wireless extender, like the AirPort Express.
