    Nice Looking but terrible function

    • Written by from Charlotte

The top cover doesn't lay flat but more importantly the triangle doesn't support the weight of the iPad. It seems as if the magnets are way to weak so any pressure on the iPad causes the triangle to come apart and the iPad to fall over. It almost seems as if Apple didn't test the functionality of the case before deciding to sell it. Don't buy this case!

    GREAT look and feel...

    • Written by from Elmsford

...but the functionality is very poor. I use it a lot and I'm always fidgeting with the cover. There's something wrong with the design of the magnet system. It doesn't hold it's fold properly and therefore is never secure. When used as a stand or prop, it often falls. I've owned every model iPad. This case has the poorest functionality of any I've owned. It is not representative of Apple design quality.

Steve Jobs would not be proud.

    • Written by from Grand Rapids

The previous version of the Smart Case was much better. The Air Smart Case has a poor color selection. The magnets are not strong enough to keep the cover in place when using the iPad. For $79 Apple should be ashamed. Do not buy. I'll be returning mine.

    $80 piece of junk....

    • Written by from PHOENIX

The leather looks and feels great. The left side of the cover is too big and bulky sticking out and looking awkward. The cover never did lay flat when closed, the corners would lift up. I have been trying to get some clarification as to why Apple has only make available a smart case in Leather. On my 3rd generation iPad I had a polyurethane smart cover in Product RED and I loved it. Also the iPad mini still has the polyurethane cover available. My recommendation is to steer clear of this case. Totally disappointed in the design of this product. Epic fail...

    Apple showed me better brands

    • Written by from Petaluma

I always buy everything from Apple. Until this case. First $79 was insane. So I reluctantly bought it. After getting home and looking at one terrible design (triangle stand gone - that extra flap gave it stability - now missing.) I returned it the next day very disappointed in both price and design. Price was the real problem. This should have been $29 (or even $19 to reward customers for being loyal). But it wasn't. It's a flat out rip-off. Anyway - I returned home and just felt unsafe without a case (having dropped my ipad 3 - 1 ft and shattering the glass - but that's another bad design problem for later).

So what Apple did was force me to look at other brands. Thank you Apple - as I found there are many accessories made by other companies that were not only better but they cost significantly less. For $25 i got a better designed case. This led to me looking at all the Apple accessories that other brands make and found several items I plan to get in the future over Apple brand.

So who is to blame? Greed in marketing at Apple, the designers for putting out a garbage case (over-priced, magnet for dirt and normal grease on hands, stand is broken (by design)....it's just plain wrong).

If I were apple - i would toss in a case for free. That case did not cost more than a dollar to make. Losing customers loyalty to brand is a bad thing.

Poor Design and Far Too Expensive For What You Get

    • Written by from Franklin

I purchased this case with high expectations being that Apple designed it and their last model case was superb. The Leather Quality is nice and the magnet/sleep mode is a nice touch. It stands up well for landscape viewing at all angles.

The design is garbage. It is far too flimsy to offer any real protection for my new iPad Air. The tablet will fall out of the case if you aren't careful. It is not a tight fit by any standards. (The Kindle Covers are very tight. You almost need a shoe horn to get the tablet in or out which is excellent.)

When the case is closed it does not close all the way. The spine side leaves a gap of about an eighth of an inch. And the hinge is super flimsy and sticks out from the side the case about a quarter of an inch.

It looks thrown together and cheap. I have used cheaper cases on other tablets that perform better than this.

Once my other case comes in I will promptly send this one back. I could by two GOOD cased for $80. This one is terrible.

I am not used to sub-par products from Apple. But this case seems to be an afterthought and it should be redesigned before they keep selling them.

I HATE this case! It doesn't stand up in landscape very well if you need to touch it. It's fine if you are just standing it up to watch a movie, but if you need to swipe or pinch or touch it, the thing falls over. I'm so sick of it falling over now. The problem is the new 3-fold versus the previous 4 fold. It's a terrible design and they should give everyone their money back because it's that bad! The cutout for the headphone jack is also problematic because it's not big enough. I previously used my Goal Zero Rock Out speaker without issue but this one prevents it from plugging in all the way. What a total pain.

They should redesign it and give everyone that has this version a new one. It's that bad!

    Falls over

    • Written by from Somerville

With four sections, the old cover could easily keep the triangle shape needed to prop the ipad up. The new design, with three sections, simply cannot maintain the triangle--it collapses constantly. This is not complicated, a child could intuitively tell you that this would happen. Whoever thought this change would be an improvement needs to be fired immediately.

    Great concept but....

    • Written by from Knoxville

I bought the black smart case looks and feels amazing, but for the $80 price tag this case lacks so much, a magnet in the back would be idea, and the case is utterly useless as a landscape stand the ipad falls over constantly. The front cover also isn't very secure apple needs to work out the bugs on this one

    Awesome Concept, Failed Execution

    • Written by from QUINCY

Smart Covers for the previous iPads had 4 panels where panel 1 and panel 4 would magnetically lock together, creating a solid triangular base for use as a stand, or even a left-hand "clutch" in portrait mode while surfing/lounging on the couch.

These new Smart Covers/Cases have 3 panels where the edge of panel 1 sits in a magnetic groove on edge of panel 3. Guess what? It doesn't work for beans. The iPad falls over in both positions, and it falls apart when you try to use it as a "clutch" as previously mentioned.

Expensive "smart case" gets an F

    • Written by from Jacksonville

I loved my old iPad 2 case, it functioned well and supported the iPad in upright horizontal position. However, this new iPad air smart case is very flawed!!!
Even though this full protection case does the job of protecting the iPad air, the accordion design is flawed. It doesn't support the iPad, and constantly collapses in the horizontal keyboard position, and falls over when in the more upright position. Plus, it has a cheap feel to the usually superior design and build quality that Apple normally produces.

Don't buy it. Wait for next version. Rudimentary design flaw unacceptable

    • Written by from Cupertino

Love the snug fit and the style, but someone in design could have taken the time to actually try to see if it is functional.

When propped upright it constantly falls over. I didn't notice until it was too late (got a scuff mark on it and can't return).

Now headed to the hardware store to buy velcro to fix it the problem.

Love the iPad Air, great job, but the case? Major fail.

    Most frustrating Apple product ever

    • Written by from BAINBRIDGE ISLAND

Suffice it to repeat - This product would never have graced Apple's shelves when Steve Jobs was in control. It is beautiful, protects well, but that's it. Used as a stand, it collapses if you bump, breathe on, or even just walk near your iPad. (Watch someone try to use it on an airplane). It's just too lightweight to hold the iPad for more than a few minutes if you're trying to actually use the iPad. But there is a fix! Grab two medium size Paper Clamps and clamp the Smart Case in the "Stand" position. It works perfectly to make the stand rigid and won't scratch or harm your iPad because the clamp squeezes the raised ridge on the front of the Smart Case and clamps the cover to the back of your iPad. Quick and it's free if you have the clamps available. A wonderful, beautiful case that requires a clunky fix to be useful. Apple should be ashamed.

Apple can do better for 80 bucks

    • Written by from BURLINGTON

I read the tepid reviews but went ahead and bought one. The reviews were accurate.
PRO's - clean fit, light, easy turn on off

CON's - 1. the charger doesn't fit! if you force it it 'might' stay now and then
    2. the headphone jack - other than the apple headset does not fit at all.

So i thought do i cut the case to make it work? For 80 dollars i returned the case.
The pad is amazing, it needs a light, smart case, but this is not it.

Poor reading angle in both positions

    • Written by from Ottawa

In both orientations this case fails to provide good angles for reading / web browsing. It's either too steep in the upright position, or too shallow in the low typing position. Does apple even test using their cases? I don't understand how they could release something so unintuitive given their design ethic.

    Functional design flaws

    • Written by from Sun City

I agree with the other review stating that the case does not function as a secure stand. It is a secure case but not the quality of the ipad2 cases. Also I had a Dr. Dre's stereo headset which fit into the jack both on my ipad2 and on my iPhone but I must remove this case in order the plug in the headset. This case has design flaws and I hope Apple will seriously take a look at this. It's even $10 more than the ipad2 cases. Very disappointed.

So frustrated with this case first of all it does not stand at all the magnetic backing does not stay when folded back and it constantly falls when I try to prop it up. I literally threw it away out of frustration. Three-fold system is very bad I can not beleive that came from Apple. Four-fold system on the old cover was great and I do not know why they have change it. Don't waste your money, becauease you will be frustrated too...

Please bring back the more sturdy version!

    • Written by from Fairfield

I'm sorry, but Apple, who is usually amazing in the design department, really botched this one. The case frustrates me every time in use it. It has no stability. Apple's engineering department seems to have forgotten basic principles. I always have to readjust the stand in both positions because it never quite fits my viewing perspective and it's flimsy. I truly hope Apple can rectify the major flaws of the IPad Air Case and Smart Case.
