Great Case w/ a Couple Minor Issues

    • Written by from Ft Meade

I was a little nervous about spending $40 on a case for my phone, but I'm thrilled that I did. I bought this case for my iPhone 5 and I just wish it had been available all along.

The case is very slim. I don't have precision measuring equipment, but the case adds about 2.4mm to the thickness of the phone, taking it from 7.6mm to about 10mm; a hair over 1 mm thicker than the 5C. The lip of the case stands about 1mm higher than the face of the phone, making it safe to lay face down on a flat surface.

The case is held to the phone by a ridge that runs all the way around the inside of the case which grabs on to the chamfered edge. This keeps the entire face of the phone clear, gives it a very snug fit, and makes the case solid enough that it feels like it is actually part of the phone. There is a little bit of a trick to getting the case off the phone, but it's not *that* difficult

The leather provides a good amount of grip without making it too difficult to get in or out of a pocket. It doesn't actually feel much like leather though. It feels more like the high-quality rubberized backing of other, lesser smartphones.

Volume buttons are easy to press, the lightning port and silence switch are easy to access, and as far as I can tell the holes for the microphone and speaker line up exactly, but older 3.5mm jacks have a hard time squeezing into the gap left for the headphone jack.

My only two complaints with the case are that the power button is pretty hard to press, and if you sit down with your phone in your pocket the corners of the case will sometimes pry loose. Both very minor complaints, but worth mentioning.

    Buy this case!

Gorgeous case - difficult to remove

    • Written by from Tempe

Yesterday I bought the iPhone 5s and the black leather case along with it. It's a beautiful case; the leather feels fantastic. So, as a case, it definitely earns five stars.

The challenge comes with (as with any case) fitting thicker headphone cords into it or fitting the phone into the dock. Normally, the solution is to just take the case off for a bit and then snap it back on. The 5s case is just far too difficult to remove to make this work. It takes 15-30 seconds of really prying and pushing to get it even partially out of the case.

    A Fantastic Case, Except For...

    • Written by from Dalhart

Any reviewer that does not acknowledge how incredibly well this case complements the premium feel of the iPhone 5S isn't doing it justice. It's the thinnest iPhone case you can find. It's as thin as is really possible for a full coverage case. The leather feels fantastic, ages decently well, and is protective enough if you're only a little clumsy. It really, really feels great.

Those are the reasons why I really miss this case. But I won't be buying another one.

    Here's why:

    1. The biggest problem for me. The earbud opening in the case won't let you use most third party headphones. Now, I don't know why headphone manufacturers make the plastic around the input jacks so clunky, but they do. Bose headphones, no. Cheap headphones from Amazon, no. Panasonic earbuds, no. Apple earbuds, yes. If you only plan on using Apple earbuds, or are willing to switch, go for it. Me, I lose earbuds like crazy so I buy the cheap ones and leave them everywhere. I couldn't use those.
    2. The leather ripped at the bottom around the speakers after just a couple of weeks, after removing the case to clean the phone. If you plan on removing the case on more than a monthly basis, I don't know if it's sturdy enough.
    3. The leather scuffs. All phone cases scuff, but this one shows it. Not a huge deal - definitely not a deal breaker. Scuffed or not, it still felt and looked great.
    4. The lip around the screen is just a little bit too shallow for me. If, for example, I drop the phone on asphalt face down, I'm not sure the lip is large enough to prevent a small pebble from scratching the screen. It's a tiny bit too much slimming around the screen, the only place where I want any bulk.

    Good Case

    • Written by from San Jose

Good, protective case. My only complaint is that tiny particles of dust and crumbs get into the little gap between the case and phone. I liked how the iPhone 4 bumper covered those gaps to prevent from little crumbs and etc from getting stuck in there. Dust also gets into that little hole where that camera is. I also wish this 5s case was more grippy, especially when you place it on a table so that it doesn't slide.

If Apple could just make an official bumper case for the iPhone 5/5S, I would be extremely content.

Make sure you get a good one

    • Written by from Amherst

I am about to order my third case. The first one, the leather was separating from the plastic surrounding the opening for the camera and flash. The second one looks like the leather has been creased in several places, making the surface uneven.
Overall though, I really like the case. I just need to find one that doesn't have a defect.

    Good looking and Protective

    • Written by from San Luis Obispo

I got this case about a month ago and it is a great case. I was first nervous about purchasing the case because of past reviews of the case getting dirty easily, but the black case has shown no sign of dirt yet. It fits perfect on the phone, looks sleek and it feels very nice in your hand. The only thing I do not like (but it is not a big problem) is that the power button does not feel like it is clicking when you press it, but it obviously works, jsut does not feel the same as having no case on it. Overall a great case.

Solid case with a few issues

    • Written by from Orange

This is a really good case but it has a few problems. The leather is really nice and soft. It's thin but could be thinner. It still makes the phone feel a decent amount chunkier. The biggest problem is that most aftermarket headphones can't plug into the iphone when the case is on. Another slight issue is that with a leather case you don't get to see the beauty of the space gray on black metal. Apple should consider manufacturing a nice transparent case.

    Fine case

    • Written by from SAN FRANCISCO

I didn't give this a full five because I don't yet know how durable it will be in the long run. I suspect it will eventually show signs of wear., but I bought my "brown" (really saddle tan) case when it first came out, and there are no signs of wear at all: no smudges, stains,--nothing.

I can only attribute the bad reviews vs. my totally positive experience to differences in use (or more likely, abuse). I would never put my phone in a pants pocket; it usually goes into the inside breast pocket of my jacket, and occasionally in a Sena holster. I probably don't use it as much as most folks, which along with careful handling undoubtedly contributes to my positive experience. And no, it is not particularly difficult to remove, not that that matters much as I have no reason to remove it.

As others have pointed out, the case fits perfectly., looks great, and feels wonderful. People, it is not an Otterbox, and it doesn't pretend to be. Lighten up. Save your vitriol for something really serious.

iPhone 5s Black Leather case by Apple

    • Written by from Chicago

I was skeptical purchasing this case as I have always had an Otter brand case. I was VERY tired of a bulky case and really want to appreciate the beauty of the iPhone and it's slim/sleek size. I purchased the tan/beige colour first and took that back 3 days later to get black. Any colour besides black will discolour and stain to grey/black within just a few days. I am VERY happy with the cas and I'm very hard to please. I'm doing my best to not drop the thing, keep in mind it is leather and will scrape/scratch and become worn fast if you don't take some sort of care. Gave it 4 stars only because if you purchase any colour besides black, you will be very disappointed.

Great case, works well with my 5, just a pain to use headphones

    • Written by from Westbrook

I bought this case about a year ago, and since then I've used it just about everyday and even have dropped it a couple times. The leather can get scratched a little bit on the edges/corners, but if they're small enough and don't rip off the leather completely, just stick a pinhead sized drop of crazyglue down to hold it back together – fairly simple fix. It gets that nice, soft, worn leather feeling after a while, adding to the simple experience of just holding the phone. I chose black because I have the black iPhone 5, and because it doesn't take much brain power to know that dirt won't show up as easily compared to a lighter color.

The phone snaps into the case and fits like a glove – the edges don't come too far over as to pull up any screen protector, which is a huge plus in my book, but come out enough to keep the screen from dragging on a table should you put it screen/face down.

The only issue I have with the case, and this is why it gets 4 stars and not 5 (and I almost thought of deducting another star for this) is that to use any normal headphones/earbuds (third party, like Bose) you will need to take the phone out of the case or use an extender made primary to fit into abnormally small openings that lead to the headphone jack (usually come with products like an iPhone battery pack). I absolutely do not like having to do this, and taking my phone out of the case so often has lead to the thin part of the case right above the lightning connector port to break (and maybe it's because I take the phone out bottom first instead of top first).

To sum up: great case, feels nice to hold, doesn't show dirt as easily, easy to repair minor scrapes, but a pain with earbuds/headphones - however, great if you listen to music only via bluetooth or anything but your iPhone.

Black is the only way to go

    • Written by from Brantford

I bought the brown case and it was really dirty within a few weeks. Overall, I really like the feel and fit but if you want something that will retain its original look, then I think black would be the only choice.

    Plus and Minus

    • Written by from Columbia

I have had this case for about 6 months. I really like the way it wraps around the phone. It feels like it should, tight. The buttons, for me were not an issue to press like other reviewers. It is a work of art (in Red). I buy anything red as I have had lots of family and friends get cancer. So, if you don't really need drop protection other than on carpet, this would be the case for you, as it really pops color-wise. So much for the plusses, now for the minuses.
All of the colors (even brown), get a nice black ring develop at the base of the case and all the way around the edge, so if I had it to do over, I would get black as black does not show this weakness (as its black). I don't care so much about the ring, but the women in my life want me to wash it, lol, like that is going to happen, NOPE. I can live with the yicky ring and the ladies in my life don't have to borrow my phone, which turns out to MAYBE be a plus? I hope this helps folks make an informed decision.

    Lightweight and sleek

    • Written by from Orange

Like countless others, I have tried NUMEROUS cases for my iPhone. This beautiful, soft, lightweight case is by far my favorite. I have very small hands and together with the new slimness of the 5s phone, this case works perfectly. I have the Black phone/case and it looks great. The leather makes it smooth and sleek. So far no issues with dirt or grease from my hands, and I carry it in my purse pocket.

    Nice Case

    • Written by from West Springfield

Fits my iPhone 5 great. So glad Apple released their own cases (I loved the bumpers on the 4's). Didn't realize the case was one piece and it just places into the case, I like it better. The exterior buttons require quite a bit more force and good luck finding 3rd party cords to fit into the very precise hole.

    Great But Expensive

    • Written by from Hong Kong

This leather case is simply phenomenal. Great in-hand feel that is unmatched by any other cases of any kind and price. It matched my iPhone 5S so beautifully, from the layout to the cut-off part of the case... In addition, we hardly see the dirts when compared to other colours. However, if this case is cheaper, for example $29 instead of $39, I will have no more complain, and no one will.

Great case, but top button hard to push

    • Written by from Houston

Great, beautiful case. Fits wonderfully. My only complaint is that the top 'off' button is hard to push through the case. There's a notch in the leather for it but it's still hard to push. The volume buttons are not as hard to push, however I don't use them as much as I do with the top button. I'm hoping it will become easier to push as the leather wears. The button issue is the one thing causing me to give it 4 stars instead of 5.

Great case-not compatible with 30 pin adapter or iPhone 5s docks

    • Written by from IRVINE

I absolutely love this case. It's slim, sleek and adds little bulk to the design of the iPhone. Only thing I've seen slimmer are the clip on "feather" case made by a competitor which provides very little protection to the corners and bezel.

The feel of this case with your phone is great. It fits nice, tight and snug..... Until you try to use a 30-pin to lightning port adapter.... Won't work. The lighting port adapter's male portion isn't long enough to make the connections with he phone and charge it. It also will not work with the 5S dock from Apple.

I really want to keep this case but may have to return it if I can't charge my phone using my alarm clock nightstand equipped with a 30 pin dock and lightning adapter.

    Quality surprise

    • Written by from Latrobe

I just opened my product and fit it to my phone and the first things that went through my mind were that it fits like a glove. Probably the best fitting case I've had for my iPhone yet. I own the 5s and the case allows for the metal edge to show a little bit giving it a nice touch. However I was displeased with the quality of the leather. I had thought it would be a heavier duty style leather but it's really not. Although it is lightweight. I suppose it comes with the territory of the aniline dye used to color the leather. My worry is that the dye will eventually wear away leaving ugly blemishes. But overall a nice buy. I would give this a 5 star rating but I've yet to use it long enough to see the durability come into play. Feels good in the hand, fits well, looks nice, we've got a winner Johnny!

    Great case!!

    • Written by from Arlington Heights

It's a very good fit and quality, however I did find some inconsistencies with 3 different cases. But the 3rd case finally seems almost perfect and this is because the home button needs extra force to get it to work. Not a big issue, but adds to some discomfort, when you have to press extra hard each time to make sure your phone is locked. Otherwise, a great product overall.
