I like it, but I don't love it

    • Written by from Ames

I love my iPad mini with retina display, and I love having a case designed by Apple to match it. I previously owned an iPad 4 and used a polyurethane smart case and I loved it. I will be honest, I would give this case a 5 star rating if it were a polyurethane case rather than a leather case. I hate paying a premium (above the already high premium of buying an Apple accessory to begin with) to have a case that wears easily, gets dirty easily, and is hard to clean. The polyurethane smart case was I much better and cost much less. I will take function over the hardship of having a "premium" leather case any day. My case is about 4 months old and it's done, the corners are wearing, it's getting dirty, the fold in the front cover is permanently bowed out so that it doesn't close properly. I will be replacing it, but not with this case.

    Never again

    • Written by from Woerden

I have always loved the simplicity of Apple's Smart Cases. I have this one since December last year, and already after 6 months of usage, the iPad drops out of the case. It will not stay in.... I strongly advice people to make sure that the case fits, because it is a lot of money for just half a year usage.

Within six months it will no longer hold my iPad

    • Written by from Dahlonega

This case has a nice, quality look and feel, but it definitely does add to the bulk and weight of the iPad mini.
Because of this, over the space of the six months that I have owned this case, I have removed it from the case three or four times to make it more comfortable when holding it for a long time.
Because of this, it has become considerably looser. To the point that it no longer holds the iPad adequately.
When reading in bed now, I have to be very careful as the iPad wants to fall out of the case. In fact, I now just take it out of the case to avoid the thing smacking me on the nose!

My experience has been the same as others who have posted reviews here, the hole in the case for the headphone jack is way to small to use with almost any standard headphones, and this was another reason why I had to occasionally remove the iPad from the case,

My last comment is, of course, that it is preposterously too expensive. I was considering giving this case three stars until I remembered how expensive this thing is. At that price, it gets two stars.

I would recommend that if you purchase this case, you never remove your iPad from it, for my experience has been that doing so makes the case too loose for future use.

    poor quality

    • Written by from Cherry Grove

My case won't hold the mini in place, can't use it for fear of the iPad falling out and breaking. The part of the case where the charging cord plugs in has ripped and Apple doesn't replace these as it's considered normal wear and tear. I seldom use the iPad , only for traveling, it broke in 4 months, and it's apparently happened to others. It was an expensive option but the iPad was a big investment so I considered it an insurance purchase. Don't waste your time or money on the cases until they fix them.

Overall good quality but headphone cutout too small

    • Written by from Vancouver

I think the finish and quality level of the product is great. iPad Mini fits snugly. However, the headphone jack cutout is way too small. I wasn't surprised when I couldn't plugin in my Sennheisers, but even Apple's new ear buds don't have enough room. I also agree that the feel of the volume rocker is lost, but I see how that could be an engineering issue (switch is too deep in the material). I can live with that, but the headphone issue is a dealbreaker. Will be returning it.

    Fundamental flaw

    • Written by from Redmond

My ipad mini retina has one corner that perpetually pops out of this case. The case would be fine otherwise, but the inability of the ipad mini retina to fully snap into it is a major detraction. I normally love the cases sold by Apple, but this one is a huge disappointment. If they get around to fixing the design so the mini retina can snap in properly, then I would also be happier if they made an orange and/or yellow version of the case.

    Poorly made

    • Written by from Toronto

Decent material, but the construction is poor. I had a tear within the first two months where the lightning cable connects. And the stand is the worst I have ever experienced. This cover is not consistent with the quality I have come to expect from Apple.

    Some pros and cons

    • Written by from Mukilteo

I have used many but different ipad cases(Similar fashioned.), and this is my overall review about ipad mini smart case.
Note I have used a old full size ipad smart case(polyurethane), in which you might expect very similar, but in fact, there are clear difference.

    1. Great finish
Its probably the best finish ipad mini case you can get. Of course, every should fits with ipad, but every hole of this smart case is perfectly lined up. You do not see this level of finish often from other cases. Also, many other cases do not copied 3-way stand well. when i fold backward; some of them do not hold stand as triangle. Of course, this one do not have those problem.

Only problem i see is edge part do not look clean, It is not because of quality control but it's due to its new design. I prefer old polyurethane case style edge.

    2. Holds ipad firm
One of the most common and major problems of many other ipad cases is that they just don't hold ipad firm enough.
If you drop your ipad, or somewhat give force to tilt the case, ipads and most of other cases separated easily.
This one is not going to be separated easily unless u are willing to.

Another great thing is all 4 edge of cases holds your ipad mini(or Air I assume# firmly.
Old full sized ipad case was holding case firmly but they do not hold edge firmly.
They hold only the corner part, so when you used your folded cover part as handle of ipad, and do not hold ipad itself, you can find large enough gap between case and ipad itself. This case made improvement, so it does not do that.

    3. Cover ipad completely.

Many of 3rd party ipad case do not cover ipad completely. Especially most of them do not cover diamond cutted edge.
You might think this is not a big deal, but the diamond cutted edge is very common place to have tiny dents.
If you still do not care about some tiny dents then, sure; it might not your pro of this case.
However, since Apple product's finishs are generally very good, one tiny dent can attract your attention easily,
and your finger easily finds out different feeling of dents.

This case cover edge completely and protects it well, while other do not.

    1. Expensive.
Well, you might know it already; Apple accessories are generally too expensive.

    2. Bad feeling-texture/button feeling.
It is my personal part, but i really do not like the feeling of the leather case.

First of all, it kill's button's clicky feeling.
Case covers volume buttons and on-off button, and when u try to click it, its not clicky any more.
You will feel somewhat not hard but kinda softy feeling, which I really do not like.
When I used old full sized polyurethane case, the case slightly kills clicky feeling but not this much bad.

Also, since it is leather, it is slightly sticky. It's difficult to describe, but since your hand has some sweat-moisture,
you can feel slight stickyness after decent amount of use time#if you are sensitive enough).
At least, it clearly differs a lot from both plain ipad mni or old polyurethane case.
This is personal preferance; you might like leather texture. However, this is my biggest complain of this case.
I really hope this case have extra coating to have different feeling or something.
I do not think leather is suitable for device with extensive amount of grabbing.

    3. 3-way stand
Old ipad case had 4-way stand, but now, its 3-way. I clearly prefer 4-way stand more than 3-way.
It gives way more firm stand and handle compared to 3-way. 3-way cover easily flops down.
4-way stand have extra one more part, which is holding whole cover as triangle shape, and now
we do not have that. Many users complains

Mini iPad falls easily out of smart case.

    • Written by from naples

I love my mini iPad, but do not like the smart case I bought for it. iPad has fallen out of case repeatedly (on the floor!) - it is not a snug fit. I also have a Kindle which, during years of use, has never fallen out of it's case.

    Not for kids

Looks pretty when new but gets dirty very quickly. Worse, when dropped from only about 3 feet while in this case the screen still shattered; a $200 repair. Nice for a careful adult not sharing with kids only.

    perfect cover

I got this with the iPad so they've never been apart. It is understated function and quality - no fuss and no unnecessary bells and whistles. There are cheaper covers - and some more expensive - but this is the one that is just right.

    Great Case, Poor Stand

    • Written by from Ottawa

This is an excellent protective cover, and worth buying just for that – it's a perfect fit and the cover is easy to use. But it's not a great stand at all: upright, the iPad is likely to fall forward, and set up either of the two ways it is not secure with its weak magnet which separates with the slightest influence. I've added ultra-thin black Velcro strips to the back and outside cover to hold it at different and better angles, and it is much improved. I feel the stand aspect of this case is another clever design idea from Apple that is less than functional. Minimalism is great but shouldn't exclude function.

Fits the iPad mini Retina well

Stability: I found it tumbled over frequently with anything more than the most ginger of touches.

Bottom Line: Perfect for some, not for me.

    Flawed design – steer clear!

    • Written by from Redlands

I bought my wife an iPad mini with a light blue Smart Case as a gift. She liked the color, feel, and fit. However, it simply doesn’t work as a stand for watching video, lap reading, or typing. It collapses within a few minutes even when watching video on a solid kitchen table. On a kitchen table it holds the mini upright just long enough to make you believe that a bit more use will crease the fold more so it will work. She used it for two weeks but it never got better. Watching her frustration using it on an airline tray table was the final straw that caused me to order a Logitech case with a sturdier stand.

I’ve been buying Apple products since 1983 (Apple IIe) and this is the first that was a total disappointment—steer clear of this one.

    Go with something else

    • Written by from BERRIEN SPRINGS

I really wanted to like this case. I'm a big apple fan. I've been using a case from Invellop and have like it, but it's started to come apart after a year, so I started looking for something else.

Today I bought the Smart Case for my mini. Here are the main things I didn't like:

    1. There is a sharp edge on the left side when the case is closed. Apple: please fix this. It's uncomfortable to hold with one hand because of this. Of course, when the case is opened and flipped back on itself, the sharp edge is gone, but that's besides the point.

    2. When the case is opened, and the front cover is folded to the back to hold with one hand--why is there not a magnet on the back of the case so that it holds in place? The Invellop case, which I think costed me $15 has this and it's a nice feature to have. But with this case, if you're holding it with one hand, there's always a piece of the cover that's hanging down a little because there's not a magnet there to hold it in place.

Yes, those two things are enough to do it for me. Apple, if you fix this I will gladly keep the case. Instead, I will return it tomorrow. What did I order instead? I ordered a case from Khomo.

    Much love.

Disappointed in the quality of connector and spine

    • Written by from Algonquin

Overall, I like the concept of the cover itself. However, I'm concerned about the material used to bind the connector to the cover. It appears flimsy and I would have preferred a material that was more rigid. I'm afraid that this cover will wear out or tear over time.

Very pleased, better materials than I thought

    • Written by from Lexington

I didn't expect much from this case other than a good fit and protection all around form my iPad Air. After having it 2 weeks and heavy use, I'm pleased with it. It isn't going to be the case for everyone, but I've always asked this question "Why make all these super thing phones and tablets, then just throw them in a case 3x thicker?"

I got rid of my old iPad original, and with this case on, I can still put the entire thing in my old iPad's loose fitting soft case which has handles and pockets, etc. The leather is very nice, although I saw some negative reviews, it is much nicer than the polyurethane former case yet still very thin.

It can be a bit precarious at times to get the magnets to hold the 3-fold case together as a prop, but in general it isn't a problem. I've never had a problem of the iPad falling over or even seeming like it might. The case is a perfect fit, the speaker, microphone and other opens seem perfectly cut out.

The only Cons so far are the fact the case seems to attract a lot of dust that then gets stuck on the screen and in the sides of the case. The creases in the leather cover seem like they might be a bit fragile and may wear sooner than the rest of the case. Also, the hinge quickly seemed to not close flat after short use. The cover lats flat on the iPad except right near the hinge, where it seems to push away from the glass a little bit
