    Freaking Macbook power cord

    • Written by from Brentwood

Just make a replacement power cord like the new Mac's and stop forcing us to buy these cords you are selling today where the cords tear and expose the wires and then the wires break. Does anybody know if there is a 3rd party company that sells these cords? I am so over this.

I Loathe all the Apple power cords!

    • Written by from Columbus

I have had to replace my power cord for my MacBook Pro 4 times! At $80 each, this is ridiculous! The sheath around the cords gets holes from being flexed (it's supposed to be flexible) and then the sheath wears out, stretches & tears, exposing the wires. Another issue I've had with this is that the sheath discolors in the areas that lay next to the computer, making it look like it's burning from the heat or something. This is a serious issue for Apple, as I should not have to buy a new cord every year or so. When it's time to upgrade my laptop I will be looking to replace it with another brand or something that doesn't require replacing simple pieces all the time. This is utterly disappointing and ridiculous!

    I've spent over $320 on 4 chargers in <5 years. Now I need a 5th one.

    • Written by from Peoria

I've got a mid-2009 white Macbook. My FOURTH charger broke on me tonight. TONIGHT of all nights. The night before the first day of finals, which I've got 2 mind you as well as a term paper to finish. Everything I need is on my laptop and even if Best Buy was open, I can't afford to drop $80. After spending over $320, I see now only in retrospect, that I should have bought a box of cheap non-OEM chargers. I would have been way better off.

Apple should issue this statement to every MacBook owner:

"Please accept that you're not paying for a charger. You're paying for a limited time service, a random self-destructing charging device that uses innately poor equipment technology to self destruct on its own. Don't ask us when, the only guarantee is that it WILL self destruct (it's like a surprise present from us to you!!). Give it a year. Maybe more (pfff), maybe less (most likely less). No guarantees other than you will be paying for a self-destructing charging device service every year for the lovely price of $80/year + tax. Please note that we totally understand you you paid over $1000-$2000 for your now obsolete MacBook 4 years ago. We understand that we also haven't lowered our MacBook charger prices. We understand, and we are more than happy to accept this. You must too."

I agree with all other macbook users.

    • Written by from Roscoe

It's been said countless times, but these chargers are the worst. Every other computer out there has one that you can disconnect before the dc adapter. Replacing the chord costs about $3. Not only are they built into the dc adapter on the mac, but the chords are flimsy and fray well within a year of regular usage.

I've bought about 4 or 5 adapters in the past 4 years that I've owned my Mac at $80 a piece each. You can bet that this latest one to break is getting cracked open with a screwdriver and soldered together by hand, because there's no way that I'm going to continue to fund this kind of highway robbery.

Apple, there are 1,504 negative reviews on this charger and more come rolling in every day. Please recall this product and design one that actually works.

i received this charger and a macbook a few years ago. the charger worked wonderfully for the first year or less before it began to break. normally, i would just reposition it to get it to work, especially because i can NOT afford to get a new charger. today, when the charger was repositioned, i didn't notice the small tear in the back of the charger, and was nearly electrocuted!! there were sparks and the charger was VERY hot. i only have four percent battery left now, and will now be without a laptop until i can afford a secondary charger. i am definitely disappointed in the price and quality of this product. thanks, apple for almost electrocuting me!

overall, it's overpriced, and horribly built. i just wish there were another way for me to charge this laptop :(
definitely switching back to hp after this experience.

Cable is too stiff, resulting in shearing.

    • Written by from Dallas

I'm now purchasing my 3rd adapter in 5 years. The first one was the old design where the wire came directly out of the magnetic plug. The wire for that one broke off at the junction with the magnetic plug. The second one I bought was the current version with the wire at a 90 degree angle with magnetic plug. I was optimistic that this would correct my previous problem, and it did. The problem with the second one was that the smaller wire that goes to the computer sheared off at the base where it connects to the main adapter. IMO the problem is primarily with the brittleness and/or stiffness of the wire Apple uses for these cords. I have experienced the exact same thing with the iPhone cords which have a similar feel. The quality of these cables is probably my biggest complaint with Apple products across the board. It's almost like they design them to be disposable.

I've gone through 4 chargers in 2 years!

There is a serious flaw with this product and apple has yet to acknowledge it. Typing this as I sit in an apple store in Bridgewater, NJ waiting for them to replace my 4th charger. Fingers Crossed. Shaking my head!

    Worst product

    • Written by from Detroit

I love all my apple products. But I have to say this charger is their worst product. I had to buy 2 of these chargers within 3 years. The first one melted, the skin of second one has split in just 14months and from my past experience I fear that it will break in few months. I took lot of care while using the second one and let me tell you I use this charger mostly as a fixed charger because I hardly carry this laptop anywhere. Please discontinue this and design a new one.
    Extremely disappointed.
    Buyers: take lot of care.

    Please rework this design ASAP...

    • Written by from Portsmouth

I love my MacBook. I really do. But I despise this power adaptor because of its ridiculously high failure rate. I'm writing this review on a non-Apple device because my MacBook battery is dead. Why? Because the power adaptor failed, without warning, AGAIN (third one). Please, Apple, read these reviews. I absolutely REFUSE to continue shelling out $79 for this horrendously substandard product. Please fix this before you lose me back to a PC....

    Rethinking This Design Flaw

    • Written by from San Jose

Apple really needs to focus on redesigning this charger. I love the macbook and I've always gone back to a macbook no matter what but they really need to do something about this charger. Since 2007, I've owned a macbook and since then, I've paid for about 5 different replacements for the charger. I try to be very careful but in the end it fails and breaks at the ends of the charger. I'm getting really tired of spending upwards of $80 for each charger; just because my macbook has important information on it, I can't afford to just go with a generic brand fearing the worst might happen. So Apple, please fix this problem, you've had many years and countless complaints.

I have had horrible experiences with these chargers. I have had my Macbook Pro for about 4 years, and ive gone through probably 4-6 chargers. The last charger i got, I wrapped the parts that usually break in electrical tape. Today, it broke again. I have to get another because if not, I cant charge my laptop, but I would give it 0 stars if I could. Bottom line: These chargers stink, and break often.

Major fail - too expensive to replace with the more of the same Apple junk

    • Written by from Northville

Apple blew it with this one. Extremely weak design. Hard to not have a negative opinion of this item. Complete fail and they should have recalled this adapter and replaced it at their expense. Fat chance right?
While the failure is not rare, it's less common with Apple where you just pay more. Isn't that their hallmark?

I love my Apple devices but I don't understand why they there isn't a better charger. The material coating is too thin and I have had 3 chargers break because the plastic melted! It's pretty ridiculous. I love my macbook but a $1,000 + computer should not have to have the charger replace every year!!

Poor build quality.. No more apple for me

    • Written by from Worcester

Simply put, Apple keeps producing flashy products that don't hold up to normal wear and tear.

This cord failed me after a year of use, and during this time I was conscious of how these consistently fail those who have them and made sure I always wrapped up and appropriately packed the cord up after use. It still failed. The fact that apple is asking me to shell out $80 for a replacement is laughable. For a product this flawed, there should be a recall, or at least reasonably priced -and improved replacement parts offered through apple. Rather than fixing this problem and supporting their clientele it seems apple just wants to milk us by forcing us to buy one at a ridiculous price, else lose the function of an expensive computer. I'll grab an aftermarket replacement before giving another dime to this company.

As a consumer, this was just the last big disappointment for me regarding my feeling toward, and loyalty to apple. It's safe to say my next computer will be a PC, and I'll never go back to apple again.

the worst quality of apple products... is the charger for the macbook pro. Lasted for about 16 months, and it's super expensive to replace. Very unhappy with their adapter quality. The wires broke off right at the base of the adapter :(
