    An Awfully Expensive "Subscription"

    • Written by

Might as well pile on... my battery started failing at about 12 months and has now gone completely dead at 16 months. And, yes, I conditioned the battery as required.

Do I really have to pay Apple a $130 per year "subscription" for the privilege of using my Macbook as a laptop? That's crazy. That nerdy guy in the Apple commercials is starting to look pretty wise right about now.

    Pathetic Battery Life

    • Written by from ESCONDIDO

I never thought I'd be disappointed with any of Apple's Products but, like countless others, my battery stopped charging after only a year of use. I can only use my MacBook if it is plugged into the wall. If for some reason the MagSafe Power Adapter is disconnected the computer shuts down automatically. Now I have to spend $129 +tax to get another rechargeable battery and if the next battery is as short-lasting as this one was then I'll have to plan on spending $129/year (about $10.75/month) until either Apple fixes this by extending the battery life or a third-party starts selling a longer lasting battery.

    • Written by from Newport News

Great battery when you first get it. After 5months battery power is only at 89% I downloaded Coconut Battery (program off Macworld) it views current mAh and previous mAh when it was brand new. Great program. See what the rest of you get. Mine also might be defective. so im taking it back to Apple ASAP when i get time.

    Four years

    • Written by from Seattle

I spilled water on my macbook and killed my battery. And it is a shame.

I've had this macbook for a little over four years with no battery troubles. The battery stays charged for about 3.5 hours, more if I turn on some power-saving settings.

Hope my next battery lasts at least this long.

    Waste of money!

I've had my MacBook for 5 years and have had 4 different batteries. I've let them all drain completely and only charge them long enough to reach 100%. I'm so frustrated and irritated that I will never buy another laptop with this battery. Irate is an understatement.

    battery life

    • Written by from sarasota

One of the complaints I see about these batteries is that they only give you 2.5 hours of use. Make sure that under System Preferences > Energy Saver you set the battery state for better battery life. Another thing to keep in mind is screen brightness, wifi, and bluetooth. Turn off Bluetooth and Airport if you aren't using them as they drain power searching for networks and devices.

    2nd time was the charm

    • Written by

My 2nd battery is on 762 cycles and I bought it 2 years ago. It still says the condition is good. The difference this time is that I charge the battery to 100%, and then immediately disconnect from the power source. While I use it through the day, once it gets down to the warning that it will power down at 5%, then I plug it back in. Seems to work for me! The first time I would leave it plugged in all the time, because a tech guy I worked with said that is was fine to do that. He was obviously wrong. Giving it 4 stars because the battery is still too expensive for my liking.

    140 Cycles and not charging

    • Written by from Surrey

Love my MacBook & have had it for just over a year but suddenly the battery is completely dead & not charging. It has gone through 140 cycles. Have tried all the recommended Apple fixes but to no avail. Guess I'm off to the Apple Store tomorrow for a new battery.

    My battery expanded

    • Written by

I got my MacBook in 2006, and have been using it with the same battery ever since. I'd always leave it charging, and after some time I realized that my battery had actually expanded. So now when I clip it into my MacBook, the base of the laptop is not flat - the battery sticks out like a bloated thumb. Not to mention with the battery in the area next to the touchpad becomes super sensitive - touching it is like clicking the mouse.

So I guess I have to get a new one.

Battery does not work in the real world.

    • Written by

I love the computer, too bad the battery is awful. I have a friend that has the same macbook as I do, and my sister has a different model and both have had battery issues. My problem started, I believe, as a result from commuting from my house to an internet cafe when I was traveling. If the battery was low, I would plug it in to charge, but often times I had to unplug it to change tables or I would decide to leave. From my own experience and what I have heard is that the battery takes on a memory and will not function properly unless you completely drain the battery and then fully charge it. I feel that it is unrealistic to expect the user to fully drain and fully charge the battery every time, after all this a mobile device, the user may only be in a location for a short time period. The best analogy I can think of is filling your car with gas; people don't wait until their car is on E to refill their tank and on some occasions they do not have enough money to completely fill the tank. The same goes for battery charging, if you are constantly moving locations, chances are you don't want to wait until the battery is dead to charge it and you won't have enough time to let it fully charge at one location. If I used my laptop in a home office everyday I would find the battery to be satisfactory for that setting, yet if this were the case I would not have purchased a laptop.

    Bad Battery

    • Written by from oakland

The replacement battery Apple sent now lasts about 10 minutes. What's up with this Apple? I won't buy another Apple laptop until they fix the battery problem. In the meantime I'm using an Asus eee recently purchased for traveling. I'm once again able to use a laptop without being connected to a power source.

    Disappointing performance

    • Written by from Solana Beach

I feel the need to echo the words of the majority of the other reviewers regarding the battery for the Macbook. After a year of use, I am lucky to be able to use my laptop for 10 minutes before my computer shuts down, because the battery won't hold a charge. It rather defeats the purpose of having a laptop!!! And yes, I also will be forced to purchase a new and very expensive battery. I am disappointed that Apple seems incapable or unwilling to provide a more durable battery. Reading the experiences of everyone else proves this problem is more than a minor inconvenience.

    Limited Power

    • Written by from ESCONDIDO

My wife and I have had her computer for about a year now and the battery just went out. I agree with everyone else that gave it a 1 star. and why in the heck does the battery cost so darn much?! This is just ridiculous and I am running out of polite ways to say bad words. Apple needs to do something about this issue we are all having and they need to get us new batteries. I think they should have a one time replacement battery and if your battery dies within a year and a half, they give you one free of charge. Come on APPLE, lets get it together, I switched over to MAC for a reason, don't make me go back!

My battery lasted pretty long before it became utterly useless...1.5 years! Apple always marks up their prices so that they can make it seem like their products are worth more than they really are...

How can many mac owners have the same trouble concerning power related gear? Battery turning dead before 1 year and ramdon shutdows?

After 10 months my battery is dead, shame on Apple, they certainly had to have a recall made for all first Macbook that were sold in 2006 and beggining of 2007.

    Another one bites the dust.

    • Written by from Greenville

Like 95% of the folks on this review, I've had my MacBook for about a year and the battery went dead. I purchased the extended warranty but it doesn't cover the battery.:( I have an old Dell (bought it in 2001), and the battery still holds a charge. What's the deal? Not much of laptop if you lose the portability and have to keep it plugged in all the time. I don't care how good the rest of the product is. When it comes to battery life, this is a critical thing. 12 months or so is unacceptable and I'm a PC convert. Does Apple want me to go back?

Sudden death right after warranty expired

    • Written by from Alexandria

It seems like a common theme around here this battery dies around a year, and mine was no exception. I know, blah blah batteries die anyway, shouldn't expect miracles. But having owned three other laptops over the years, IBM, Toshiba and Dell, none of those batteries failed in less than 3 years and I would expect Apple to be able to at least match that kind of quality.

It is unfortunate because I had an otherwise good experience with this, my first Mac, and was thinking about getting a Pro for work and pass this one onto the wife, now I am not so sure I would ever dare to buy another Macbook unless someone can tell me what's up with these batteries.
