I bought my MacBook for school in September and have seen slowly decreasing battery life since I bought it. This is probably because I do not always drain the battery completely and then charge it completely. I mean, who does? That can be challenging when it is drained and you plug it in, but then the class ends after you have charged it only 1/3 of the way. I have also noticed that everyone with a mac at school brings their charger with them, as opposed to very few pc owners. This is an expensive replacement item, Apple. It would be different if the battery cost 50 dollars or something. But the fact that the battery never had a long interval between charges to begin with and then on top of that has now a life of about 1 and 1/2 hours when I am running Word, iTunes, Safari, and Mail with energy saver set to "better battery life" , no widgets on my dashboard, and the brightness set to 1 bar is not only disappointing, it is unacceptable. I don't seem to be the only person having this problem, either. The only upsides to this battery are: 1) there is an indicator light in the bottom, 2) it is lightweight, and 3) it does not overheat. If anyone has any suggestions for better battery life, I would love to hear them. I would be happy to sacrifice a few millimeters of the MacBook's slimness to have better battery life. I don't know if the reason for the inability for it to hold a charge for more than 2 hours is because of my charging methods or not, but it seems to me like a shame that a Dell Latitude laptop's battery can hold a charge so much longer than my Mac. I mean, come on. Everything else about the computer is great? Why can't this work like the rest of the computer?

    battery life

    • Written by from Raymond

I have had my MacBook for a year and a half and still can get over an hour's use out of the battery. I have "conditioned" the battery as detailed in the MacBook manual religiously. Clearly these things do not last forever. Mine is certainly not what it used to be. Given the usable life-span of these things, Apple really should consider this a loss-leader and drop the price. I understand it is the best current technology can offer, but c'mon.

To those who don't condition the battery and then complain about the shabby life-span of the battery, it's not like you weren't warned. Maintenance is part of ownership. Complaining so is like complaining that your engine in your new car died at 30,000 miles even though you never changed the oil. Doesn't make it less of a pain and doesn't make the batteries last longer (they still are overpriced for something that will not last the expected usable life of the computer), but it does take away your right to complain.

    a shame

much like the cases of other reviews ive read, my battery is starting to die as im approaching the 1 year mark. its really a shame that this looks to be taking away some of apple's customers. i hate to see such a great computer and OS be looked down upon by people because of the battery. for their own sake, they should try to figure out this battery situation.

    One Year

    • Written by from Arroyo Grande

My battery stopped holding a charge, and only runs when it is plugged in to the wall. I owned it for 11 months. It is currently a desk top because I don't want to unplug it, but sometimes the magnet gets bumped and the computer turns off. Thus, I agree that it is a bummer this is happening after a one year time span to every battery, and also the high price of a new battery. Hope you guys at Apple firgure something else out. Contrary to the battery problem I really like my new Mac...comming from a PC it has been an interesting learning curv and also exciting. So I look foward to a better battery that can last longer.

i have followed the directions about battery care including running it down and charging etc. but my first battery burned out, literally, after about 7 or 8 months. there were a couple of scorch marks on the bottom of the battery and the computer didn't recognise the battery, luckly it was under warrenty and it was simply replaced at my local apple store.

    Overpriced, but essential

This was overpriced for a simple battery. It's essential, but doesn't last as long as the black one. I guess it's a money making thing. Pay more money for the black MacBook and get a good battery... I would just get a black MacBook and return the white so that you don't have to waste $400 on batteries.

    89% charge after 5months

    • Written by from Newport News

Great battery when you first get it. After 5months battery power is only at 89% I downloaded Coconut Battery (program off Macworld) it views current mAh and previous mAh when it was brand new. Great program. See what the rest of you get. Mine also might be defective. so im taking it back to Apple ASAP when i get time.

Gets the job done...could be better

    • Written by from Bayside

I would say I get about 3 hours of use off of one charge. This time is just normal use like: surfing the internet, writing a paper with word, or looking at pictures in iphoto. In addition to those, sometimes i listen to music. I have gone through 53 cycles and according to istat pro, my battery health is already 81%. IF this is correct, I am not too impressed. I have had my computer for about 4 months now. I suppose I can work with the 3 hours per charge, but what i dont like is the fact that my battery is losing health this fast. Dimming helps...but I have yet to see past 5 hours of use.
