I replaced my original battery that lasted me 3 years. The replacement battery has only lasted 8 months before laptop shuts down without warning at around 50% charge. Currently using old battery again as it lasts longer than the new one... that can't be right! I am reluctant to buy another battery unless Apple addresses this issue, unfortunately there's no alternative.

Battery went bad in a year

    • Written by from Russellville

I've had my mac for 3 years now. My first battery needed to be replaced in 2 years, which was acceptable because I use it so much for school. I never had any problems with it getting overly hot or with the usage depleting quickly. However, the battery I got last year to replace it just crashed suddenly a couple weeks ago with only 30 cycles. Now That I'm reading all the reviews I'm worried. I have a new one in (free of charge, thanks apple :D.. which is why I gave an extra star). If anyone has any advice on why it might have crashed, please let me know!

battery dies and causes hard crash of my mac with no warning

    • Written by from cambridge

battery is only one year old, but already has lost most of its capacity, and frequently dies without warning (even when the menubar display shows 30% left). "Service Battery" warning is often in the menubar (how does one "service" one of these batteries anyhow??)

    • Written by from Seal Beach

Have had three of them in three years. When the thing goes bad it doesnt even warn me anymore, the computer just shuts off. I think it constantly shutting off is destroying my hard drive, my computer runs really slow now and spinrite doesnt work on mac.

    Heat destroys your battery

    • Written by from Mainz

I have my third battery in 3 years which is in my opinion average. But I found out what killed off my previous batteries. Bootcamps' drivers provide only poor power management. So the MacBook runs hot pretty soon when I run Windows or games. As the body is made of metal the heat is conducted to the battery. And batteries don't like heat. So if you want your battery to last longer make sure you not only cycle it once per week but avoid processes that heat up you Mac. Or simply take out the battery while you are using power-intensive programs.

    824 cycles!!!

    • Written by from Crewkerne

I've done 824 cycles and my battery last about 45. I think this is pretty good to be honest. I read that some peoples are dead with way less cycles, I put this down to poor use and care. If you let your battery run so low that it forces your computer to sleep and then leave it for a long period of time the battery will get eaten, If you do this a lot your battery will die.

Battery Life (Addition to Previous Review)

    • Written by from Columbus

Also wanted to state that the battery runs very hot. If I am working on it as it sits on my lap, I cannot do so for long. It does not create a burn mark, it does however cause heat welts if working for long periods of time. This makes it necessary to have a table or other to sit the laptop on when using which makes it very inconvenient most times.

To recap my prior review, this is my 2 purchase of a battery in less than 2 years. While i have had my computer for 3 years, the first battery did fine for 2 years.... So, in the 3 years of having my laptop, I have gone through 3 batteries as my battery indicator is now showing "Condition: Replace Now".

    Poor battery.

    • Written by from Spring Creek

Battery died 100 cycles in (is listed to last 300-ish) a week after my warranty expired.
It also runs VERY hot, so much that it can hurt to touch the bottom of my laptop.

Now, new one at 120 cycles laptop has to be plugged in ALL the time, as it holds a charge for two seconds at most. I can't even knock the cord without my laptop dying. Still very hot.

    very bad product

    • Written by from Sanford

first battery died after about 30 cycles, the second died after only 21 cycles. Both batteries were calibrated, as suggested. And of course the warranty does not cover it, if I was putting this garbage out I would not cover it either. I like apple products but for this amount of money I expect a much better quality. Would have loved to give zero stars.

Apple Apparently redeemed themselves w/17" 2009 unibody battery....

    • Written by from Durham

I been reading these reviews and I understand they are using an older, smaller pro and different battery management system, but I'm here to swear by my 17" 2009 unibody MBP. w/just the Intel Core 2 Duo not the new i5 or i7. I get 8-10hrs on my 256 graphics card and as much as 6hrs on my 512 on high performance!!! TEN HOURS ON A 17" FULL 1900x1200 LED SCREEN Mac Book Pro w/backlit keyboard... OMG. Look at the $2500 17.3" HP ENVY. 3.75 hrs MAX on the BIGGER BATTERY. THERE IS NO 17" on the market that even gets 1/2 the life! Its an amazing product. I am sorry their older batteries are not as good but they fixed the problem in these 17" unibodies and are promising 5X the cycles. Now that, we'll have to see, but if I'm getting 9hrs after 1 year on engineering programs while web browsing and playing itunes and dragging it to campus daily, trust me the've got a good product now. BTW I just witnessed a 13" 2006 MacBook get 4.5hrs in front of my eyes 7 days ago running 2GB RAM and Snow Leopard and 2.0GHZ processor, so I wouldn't call that terrible either and I just turned from PC's a year ago and was fairly dedicated until I witnessed my MBP.

    Disappointing new battery

    • Written by from Santa Clarita

I am a loyal Apple consumer, love my macbook pro to death! BUT, I just bought this ridiculously overpriced battery, charged it once and after that kept getting the "not charging" next to the indicator. After reading up on forums regarding this surprisingly common issue, I shut down, took out battery & power cord several times for this brand new battery to recharge on it's 2nd cycle. Alas it did but again, starting up with the problem on the "not charging" indicator....With this price, Apple needs to value it's customer quality assurance & seriously fix this $129 + tax problem!!

Stop it with the "Cycle your battery" stuff

    • Written by from Oshkosh

Seriously. Maybe I've got bad karma/voodoo/luck/whatever, but I *babied* my second battery. I have over 252 cycles on the battery according to System Profiler in the 92 weeks I've owned the battery. And Snow Leopard still says "Service Battery". Funny, 92 weeks is about the same life I got out of my first battery when I didn't cycle it at all! They are junk. I'm going to an Apple Store soon to hear the corporate line and, unless I get a free battery, I'm buying a NuPower battery.

    Portable Computing At It's Worst!

    • Written by from Marietta

I'm going for my third battery in three years. I actually needed this battery three months ago! What is the use of having a laptop if I have to use it like a desk top.

Love Apple - great products - but the worst battery on the market.

Apple Store Battery is a piece of #*&%

    • Written by from Sparkill

I bought a new battery for my MacBook Pro. the laptop is about 3 years old. A brand new battery should last a lot longer than 2 hours. This is the third battery I've bought as well.

    This is Sub-Apple standard

    • Written by from DOLLARD-DES-ORMEAUX

MBP Santa Rosa, recently replaced for free previous battery due to poor health by an Apple Store. New battery, 17 cycles 85% health, no overheat (laptop always 3/4 inch off table). Adapter unplugged when MBP powered off, and cycled once 1-2 weeks. On the go battery barely providing 1-2 hrs life. Remember that my latest one is new. Battery obviously catastrophically poor quality and sub-Apple standard. Or, maybe it IS the Apple battery standard aiming to have us buy again every x number of months? Not his cat, stores on my side and replacing it for free.

    Buyer Beware

    • Written by from Gilbert

Just bought brand new replacement battery for MBP. I get 3 hours at lowest display brightness setting and "better battery life" for graphics setting. I'm only editing files and browsing the web (no video). I guess I should be happy since I was only getting a little more than an hour on my 18-month old battery.

    MacBook Pro battery

    • Written by from ARTESIA

I have owned the MacBook Pro 15" for three years and I am about to order my third battery for it. I love the performance of the laptop, but I am disgusted with the battery. It gets very hot, loses it's ability to hold a charge and just doesn't last. Additionally, at $129 a pop, it isn't very economical for something to last such a short time. I was hopeful that Apple would come up with a fix for it, but I guess that isn't going to happen. I am afraid to purchase the new Pro because the battery is internal and I cannot afford to be without the laptop while it goes in for a new battery, when it goes out.

As with many others, love my MBP, hate the battery. I've had this computer for just over two years and now my second battery is already not holding a charge very long and showing service. Only 143 cycles. I've calibrated, etc. C'mon Apple, you really need to get the battery together. I am now going to have to shell out ANOTHER $140 for something that should have lasted 3 years and which will probably last less than another year. My old Powerbook battery hung in there for almost 3 years. I would be really nervous about buying a new MBP with built in batteries. Battery life is constantly exaggerated and then if you can't replace the thing easily... I fail to see how this is a feature in new models.

    Needs an alternative!

    • Written by from Orange Park

My battery looks like it's going to explode. It is over twice it's normal size and tearing apart, literally. It had always been very hot, so much so that I used a pillow to keep my legs from burning. I called and asked if there was a different battery I could put in there and they said no. I love my mac, but am not so sure about purchasing another one of these batteries in order to operate it.

Love the Macbook Pro, HATE HATE battery (m. A1175)

Does not last as long as advertised!!! And the battery updater does not work either (any of them). Have the same issue, don't waste money on support, just go to ebay and get one.

Thank you Apple for ALMOST creating a good product.
