    Don't buy - notifications of movement has become not trustworthy

    APRIL 2015 .. I've had Dropcam PRO for almost 2 years. Over the past couple of months, I am not consistently getting text messages of activity. Yes, I have fast WIFI and internet service at the house. No issues with other devices using internet.

    I've not changed anything other than Dropcam forcing me (and all others) to create a NEST account for the Dropcam. Dropcam company was bought by NEST, then NEST was bought by Google. Ever since the acquisition of NEST by Google, the notifications that movement has occurred within the field of vision of the camera is VERY inconsistent.

    This week I turned on Dropcam 3 times for about 1 hour each time. Two out of the 3 times no notifications of movement were sent to my cell phone. It also happened last week, and several times before that also. It has gotten to the point I can not trust this. The activity is clearly shown on the video stored at the Dropcam site so it is not the camera or my internet connection sending video to their site.

    Great low light and easy to configure out of the box

    Two good things about the dropcam are that it works great in low light and is easy to configure.

    The bad things about the drop cam?

    Notifications sort of work for sound detection and alerts only work via email after an email delay.

    Motion detection does not work at any level of change.

    App notification has yet to work to my iphone.

    It does tie through the Wink interface, but since the notifications don't really work, programmed events don't trigger.

    Tech support seems fairly slow. I can't rate their response time or quality of support yet because it's been 2 days and I haven't heard from them on any of my issues. Website support items seem old?

    I'm not sure if any of this is tied to the Nest acquisition?

    Hopefully it's a growing pain issue.

    Was good once, but hold out for something else

    Smartphone alerts have been failing (2nd time in the 9 months I've had it), either sending none or sending incorrect alerts. Sometimes I cannot connect at all from my phone but can through the web page. Support has fallen short seemingly after it became a Nest product. Keep shopping before you decide to circle back to Dropcam.

    Great quality camera

    Currently using it outside my bedroom window pointed at a Cardinal nest. Great camera quality, and sound is very sensitive, so I hear all the bees flying around, as well. I will have to remember to bring it inside if there is rain in the forecast, but the sounds are very relaxing.
    Setup is very simple. You can opt to use the Cloud service if you wish to record, but live viewing is free and easy.

    This would be an excellent tool for nursing homes or shut-ins (so patients can see live streams of the outdoors on a connected device), if the camera is placed in a good spot outside. Hearing the birds and chimes from the garden makes me feel as if I am out there.

    I haven't used it much for home security, and there is some lag time of about 10-15 seconds.

    Don't bother!

    Everything worked great when first installed in June, 2014. After Nest acquired Dropcam, the iPhone app ceased to function. You can still monitor activity on your home computer, you know, while you are standing in the house!--but not on your mobile device. When you get a message that activity has been detected, and sign in, the iPhone tells you you need Adobe Flash Player to see the video. When you try to download and install it, you get a message that the iPhone device does not support Flash Player. So now the camera is just an overpriced door stop. I am calling the AG fraud division tomorrow. I will get my money back.

    worked ok at first and then got worse.

    When I first used them they worked and I was happy until Nest bought the company and I upgraded my iPhone 4s to a 6 and the alerts and auto on and off stopped working. The cameras had no idea when I was home or away and yes I trouble shooted and still didn't fix it. When the cameras are off they are hot to the touch telling me there are still on wasting electricity and or someone is spying on me. Its ok if you want a camera with no alerts that you manually turn on and off.

    Good Product for Some Not for Others

    Some people will like them for what they do, but due to functionality issues and connectivity problems I was very disappointed. I would hope that there only a few software upgrades away from resolving the basic issues. The whole notification madness may be resolved if enough people complain. I could say more, but you will make up your own mind. Keep your receipt, you MAY want to return the camera/s.

    Dropcam Pro considerations you may not know about

    You know about the cost for cloud storage...for most people a negative.

    What you may not know...things I did not know until I used the Dropcam:

    1. You cannot set zone notifications unless you purchase cloud storage. Problem is without zones set I keep getting false notifications...many a day. I think when my furnace comes on, my vertical blinds move slightly...not a good thing.

    2. The picture they email for notifications is small, low resolution...hard to see any details. I suggested they offer customer selected image size/resolution.

    Did the "haters" even read the product description before buying?

    This product does what it says it does very well indeed.

    If you want local recording, buy something else. If you want to view using some third party viewer buy some third party camera. It doesn't have a remote pan/tilt/zoom control. It doesn't work outside and it doesn't make good coffee.

    EVERYTHING and MORE!

    I needed to monitor my two pugs as well as watch my apartment from work. My DSL signal is very slow (2.6 download and .63 upload; Dropcam stated that the minimum requirement is .5 Mbps upload. Well, even with my iMac running and a few other devices, my new Dropcam Pro works great! Set-up was fast; technical assistance by phone is there in a flash if it's needed, and all in all this is a great product at an excellent value. The free email activity alerts are excellent and I'll most likely purchase the optional cloud service. Love it.

    Not too sure where all the negative comments come from but this little thing is a beaut! Home, out of the box, up and running in less than 10 minutes! SO very easy to set up and use! I have chosen not to activate the alerts so can't comment on that, just using it for a live feed to check in whenever I feel like it. Unplug the camera, move it to a new location, reconnect using the app and you have live video again! The account can be accessed by anyone with the password you set up so my wife and I can both be viewing at the same time on iphones. Very clear video, nice audio and I even tried out the mic telling my dog to stop barking... and he did! No glitches with wireless connectivity, has reconnected several times while viewing but does so very quickly, almost no lost live viewing time. The long power cord makes for very flexible placement. Love this thing and if it weren't so pricey I'd have more of them scattered about to switch between cams!

    Great, until...

    The camera was great until the day I left on vacation... There was a network connectivity outage with the ISP and since it took longer than 30 minutes for internet connectivity to be restored, the camera was unable to re-connect itself. Apparently, the camera only tries to re-connect for 30 minutes and quits attempting to connect to the network... Now I'm 960 miles from home and have nothing watching my house. It kills me that I'm paying a premium price and not receiving any service.

    I called customer service and they were not able to remotely reset. Their suggestion is to have someone go to my house and power off the camera, unfortunately, I do not have that luxury.

    Not sure why they don't have the camera continually try to re-connect until connectivity is restored. Until they fix this major bug or start compensating users for the time it's not recording and/or stolen goods during the outage, BUYER BEWARE.

    Great, and then really frustrating - would not recommend buying right now.

    I've owned two Dropcam Pro cameras since July 2014. The cameras were easy to set up in just a few minutes and worked well. The cameras themselves are of high quality and work reliably 99% of the time. The only issue I had with the cameras was that the alert algorithm seems to work based upon lightness and darkness. So, when the sun comes out from behind a cloud and lights up a room significantly, it is counted as motion and an alert is created. It was a 4 or 5 star experience at the time. However, as most people, like myself, are likely using these cameras in conjunction with a smart phone app (in my case, an iPhone5&6), the combined experience has become extremely frustrating since about mid-August 2014 (shortly after Dropcam was acquired by Nest). Geolocation in the app is not as good as it used to be. Often I have to open the app for it to figure out that I've returned home or have left home. Often when an alert comes up, I swipe the lock screen alert, then the app opens, freezes, crashes, and then restarts. I'm getting lots of false positives for Loud Noise when there is no loud noise, and not getting notifications for movement when there is very clear and obvious movement on the cameras. Also, the app notifies me that the cameras are off when they are on - as in, I leave the house and it says "cameras are still off", when they are on, and arrive home to see "cameras are still on" when they are off. Lots of weird functionality problems. For this reason, I cannot recommend Dropcam to anyone at this time until these problems are fixed with the app. Check the App Store - you will see lots of other frustrated people complaining about these issues. It's been three months since the problems started and the developers don't seem to be on the ball with fixing the problems.

    Very Happy; Meets my expectation.

    I decided to get a Dropcam despite all the negative reviews on here. I've had the Dropcam for about 2 weeks now and I can say it definitely has it's flaws but it meets my expectation and I'm very happy with this purchase. You may be really bothered by the flaws so this may not be the camera for you.

    This meets my expectation because it serves its main purpose very well: it allows you to see a live feed of your camera from anywhere (assuming you have an Internet connection). The second thing it does very well is recording your live feed for review later. Dropcam has taken into consideration reviewing live feed may be very tedious so it will sum up all the feed where there's been activity and you can jump to the interesting moments easily.

    The bad is there are some bugs, like with any software company. Their mobile app on iOS sometime crashes and is non-responsive. I've notice this mainly when interacting with notifications, i.e. opening the app via a notification. As some other's have mentioned that sometimes the camera loses connection and there is a slight delay on the live feed. I do see it lose connection when I'm viewing it on my mobile for long periods of time; anything longer than a few minutes results in the "Connecting..." screen for about a second. To me, this is no big deal. I haven't noticed anything problems/latency when viewing from their web portal. Someone mentioned that they've time the delay to be as much as 10 seconds. I have not experienced anywhere close to this. The delay has never been any more than 1 second max. The other bad thing is the mobile app features is not on par with their web portal. There is nothing special with my set up either. I'm using an Airport Extreme (latest gen) and I have a 30/1 Mbps service. The camera usually sits right next to the router but I've moved it as far as 10 ft. I haven't tried anything else. I do, however, have my network split into 2.4 and 5 ghz frequencies.

    To those complaining about the use of flash and routing the feed through the Internet even when you're home. Both true, but who cares?! Yes Flash is an add-on to a browser but so is Javascript. Big whoop. (I hate Flash too btw)

    Overall, I think Dropcam is very good value overall. What I mean by this is I think the camera is kind of expensive at $200 but the recording service is pretty good. I'm going to definitely get the year's subscription at $99 after my 2-week trial is up.

    Would not work more than 10 feet from my modem. Returned it and got a new one per Dropcam customer service, same problem. Just worthless.

    Great device - awesome customer service

    Out of the box, set-up was super easy (via iPad for me). Both daytime and especially nighttime resolution was really surprising to me. Very low light/dark room shows up like it's in the middle of a football stadium at game time. I did have a problem (which I think was ultimately related to my ISP (TWC...) throttling back my internet speed). I communicated with DropCam customer support, and they IMMEDIATELY sent me a new camera (even before they received back the old one (which they paid to ship back)). They followed-up with me after I got the new one, helped get the CVR service switched to new camera, etc. The new one is once again working flawlessly - and I can't say there's anything at all I can say negative about the camera, its operation, the CVR service and certainly the awesome customer service they offer.

    Putting the "Drop" in "Cam"

    2 cameras @ $200 = $400 + 1 CVR plan @ $150 = $550. Distance from router = 14'. Walls in between = 0. Disconnected from Wifi = every day. Wifi speed is 21.42 download and 2.14 upload = no excuse.

    Don't read another review. This product is unreliable junk.

    Liked at first, now I cannot recommend

    I bought this camera for my house to monitor my dogs from my office. The younger of the two dogs had gotten to be a little destructive so with the microphone and speakers, easy set up and price it sounded like a no brainer. After a week I liked it so much I bought a second one to have more coverage of the house. All worked pretty well at first with a few connection problems here and there. The dog got yelled at from work, stop destroying completely plus it's just cool to see what they are up to during the day as well as the coming and goings of the dog walkers, cleaning people etc... I have had them for over a month now and the connection issues are really wearing on me. I mainly use the ipad app on my ipad air. I have a smaller 2500 sq ft house with a very strong internet signal in every room. Both cameras are one room away from my newer Apple router and I have the fastest internet available from my cable company. My work internet is the fastest possible connection available due to job requirements. With all that, there is never a period longer than 5 minutes or so where I don't lose a connection. I either get the spinner saying "loading" or the blank "lost connection" screen. Most times it comes back but it takes a while or I switch cameras or close and reopen. They should have had time to work the bugs out of this by now. Yes it's a lot less than installing full home security system and easy to use and set up but what's the point if it can't keep the video rolling for more than a few minutes. I'm past the return period so will probably sell on ebay and look for higher quality.
