This game is amazing; provided you follow instructions!

    • Written by from Downingtown

After reading a few of the reviews here I would have thought this game was riddled with design errors and early adopter bugs. Although nothing is perfect I can say with absolute certainty that anki drive is an incredible piece of technology as well as a great game for all ages. It's addicting, fun, and easy to play; perfect for anyone that has kids or a part of them that never grew up.

There is just one catch though, you have to read (and follow) the directions. What I have found is as long as you clean the tire of your cars ( with the provided tire cleaner) and keep the mat clean, this game works exactly as advertised. The cars race around and around and rarely stray off course. I myself have 3 cars and even with heavy use (and tons of collisions) my cars race around and around flawlessly. It's when you forget to clean the mat and/or the cars tires that things start to get out of control (literally).

I know this is a toy, but like anything new, expensive, and cutting edge it requires the proper care to work perfectly.

I haven't noticed any software bugs but then I started playing with the 2.0 software, and the latest update has vastly improved the already great game play. This game has really impressed my wife and I and we would recommend it to any one.

One last note, this game does require a large area for the game mat to be placed so just be prepared section off a large area of the floor or the dinning room table. It is easy to store though so even if you don't have a permanent area to place it you still should be able to set it up and use it from time to time.

Cool Idea But Not Ready for Prime Time

    • Written by from Greely

We bought this cool looking game for Christmas so our family could play as a family over the holidays. We were shown the game at the Apple store where they had a demo set-up and as a father of two pre-teen girls I watched in glee as they both had fun playing a demo game. I never expected to have the pleasure of getting to buy my kids a racing set and secretly enjoy it the way dads with boys might so I rushed to buy the starter set and 2 extra cars so all 4 of us could play together.
Unfortunately that was a plan that wouldn't work.
First problem was that the sales person at the apple store had told us that the app would work on our IPhones (I had my new iPhone 5 with me at the time) as well as iPods and iPads. It turns out that you need very recent versions so my iPad 2, my wife's iPhone 4 and my girls 1 year old iPods don't work with it, so we all ended up playing in single user mode with only my iPhone 5 as the controller - so no family play at all.
Next - we found that while the game was fun for the first 1 or 2 tournaments - it got pretty boring - surprisingly fast.
You can't race and try to win the race like normal car racing - it's all about using weapons to disable the other cars ( or get disabled). This seems like a cool idea but gets much less interesting than if say - you could run others off the track using your driving skill.
The cars charge up fast but they run out of charge equally fast so you are lucky to get 15 minutes of play before at least one car has quit ( if not all of them).
Another problem is that while the cars are "intelligent", they can't even figure out how to straighten out when they spin off the track or even just into the middle or facing the wrong direction - so a lot of time is spent replacing the cars facing the proper direction - pretty disruptive to the game.
Finally - the idea that you have to make any in app upgrade purchases for a game that costs $200 (plus another $140 to get 2 extra cars and have a complete 4 car set) is outrageous. You expect this from a game app that you get for free - not from a game that is so expensive to start with!
The game has lots of potential and the recent app update that let's you stop or even spin around is an improvement but to justify the upfront purchase price - all the weapons should be included and you just would just have to configure each car before a race to make it even and fair (in other words FUN!). Also - if this won't work with older generations of iPads, iPods, and iPhones - it really limits the number of people that will have multiple controllers unless everyone is going to run out and buy a few of the latest generation iOS devices so they can play with friends or family (Apple would love this).
So unfortunately this game is a neat idea that is fun at first try but it is too expensive, not enough fun for very long and doesn't work with many (even fairly recent) iOS devices.
Put a tiny camera in each car to give an in car cam view, stop trying to charge extra for upgrades and add more game modes like normal racing and this game has potential but not ready yet and certainly not worth the hefty price tag it currently carries.

Many people including myself are having serious technical problems with Anki. The main issue is that the cars spontaneously begin spinning like tops on the track and then often shoot off the track and need to be physically picked up and put back on. The company continues to tell multiple people mentioning this problem in the forums that they should clean their tracks/cars. From firsthand experience this does not appear to be a problem with the track but rather seems to be some sort of issue related to the software or sensors on the cars. Our Anki Drive has only been used twice because every time we try to play we end up having to replace cars on the track every 10 seconds or so. Obviously, this makes the game pretty much unplayable. Very cool concept but, so far, not well executed. I recommend that prospective buyers stay away until the company clarifies what is wrong and offers an actual solution.

Totally awesome and great customer support

    • Written by from Apple Valley

Super fun!!! This is the new age of of reality app games meets slot car racing. My 5 and 7 year old were playing and having fun in minutes. Customer care was watching my order and realized it may not get here before Christmas and shipped a second starter kit overnight just to make sure it would. I had an issue with one of the first cars. Emailed support and got a call within minutes. They sent out a new car super quick plus a bonus. This has been a great purchase and I couldn't imagine better service/support.

    Very Addictive!

This was a hit at Christmas. All ages were engaged. The older adults could not believe that the young family members were able to play a game that looked so advanced. I heard comments like "I feel like I am at a ride at Disney World". If you can afford to, I highly suggest you get all 4 vehicles.

Creative and original concept-super fun for all ages!

    • Written by from Deatsville

Bought this as a last minute, extra Christmas surprise that I hoped the entire family would enjoy. Shipping was super fast and the components are well packaged in a box you can use for storage when it is not in use. Thanks to the other reviews, which I had read prior to purchasing, I understood that each car/driver must go through an orientation process that would take at least 10 minutes each. This process was painful waiting time for the kids but critical to the success of the game and those who paid attention quickly became leaders as the real races began. Once the orientation was done, my husband and I quickly took the game away from the kids and raced against each other gleefully. The kids were begging for a turn! I can see the advantage of adding additional cars to increase the competition and family togetherness.

The cars do run out of charge quickly, but they also recharge very speedily as well. I found that the need to recharge gave me a much needed break from the action and kept me sharper "at the wheel."

This would also be a cool and entertaining activity at work for celebrations. I foresee an annual tournament and reigning Anki Champion. In a very technology-filled Christmas, this gift received The Most Favorite Gift Award!

    Lots of fun !!!

    • Written by from Milton

Fantastic. My whole family is now playing. VERY IMPORTANT: 1) clean the track and tires very often 2) flat surface: no tiles, carpet, etc
I initially placed the track over a tiled surface and the cars were constantly running out of the track. After doing some online research I tried this and now it works almost perfectly (some app crashes from time to time is my only complain).

March 2014-Developers have apparently taken the money and run-

    • Written by from Cordillera

Bought from the Apple store in Boulder , Colorado for grand kids for Christmas of 2013.

Looks pretty exciting at first start up of game.

We were Impressed as the tutorial on the downloaded iphone app sets up the cars and does a demonstration on the track of the cars and the "battle" game concept where the cars can shoot at and disable each other as part of the game.

The story of new start up of Carnegie Mellon Artificial Intellengence school students idea conceived in a coffee shop and $50 million in funding, coupled with an a product delivered to market sold only direct or from Apple stores gave their first product some serious credibility.

After running the cars around the track and enjoying the novelty, as soon as you want to change players, or try the
other car on your iphone, some of the shortcomings and incomplete aspects of the game/software start to become apparent. Of the three modes- practice, battle and race, only practice and battle are enabled. The "race" mode software or concept is listed as "coming". Getting the cars to talk to different iPhones with the apps installed becomes a real headache. Investigation reveals that once the cars are "initialized"', there is no such thing as resetting to factory defaults and getting the cars to work properly becomes more pain than any fun the game can provide.
The support , online FAQ's and answers to simple questions at that time were pretty much in a beta state not ready for prime time.

Understanding that this was a new innovative product probably rushed to market for the Christmas season, the promises online of "future updates", the buggy nature of the software and lack of online support, we decided not to return the game and wait for the developers to work out the issues with the first issue of the product. We optimistically bought two more cars and put the game on the shelf to patiently wait for the developers to catch up and work out issues that would accompany such a product after such a wide release.

It's now been four months since we shelved the game- we pulled it and the two new cars out this weekend.
We deleted the old app and downloaded it again and charged all the cars. It struck me strange that the charger provided for a game capable of four cars had only three micro/mini USB leads- Hopefully just another oversight that has been rectified in the latest version of the game ( I thought at the time).

Unfortunately, after a few glitches starting the game and getting the original two cars to work- we found the "race"
mode was still not available and no apparent way to add the two new cars to the game. We got on the support website
to find that most of the original inadequate posts and answers were unchanged and the most recent posts and answers were 5 months old. It appears that nearly no work or effort has been expended to resolve the issues with last years
Iteration of the game or to update the website.

I can only speculate on why such a potentially promising product was left in such an unfinished marginally useable manner, and wonder if Tim Cook of Apple , who gave his endorsement and distribution of the product, is aware of the products departure from Apples previous standard of quality for inclusion in their store offerings.

I would highly recommend against the purchase of the product. as your support may only extend the original
developers celebration of their perceived success somewhere on a sailboat in the Carribean and may extinguish any hope that the $ 350 early purchasers of the game spent will be not wasted.

People were laughing when they found out my dad got these for us "kids." At 25 & 27, this is one of the coolest presents we've received!! They have been a blast and are just incredible! We've had friends and family over for the past few days and EVERYONE has thoroughly enjoyed playing with our new toys. The cars drive amazingly smooth, even on carpet. One of the best things about this product is that the car abilities can easily be upgraded as the company grows and improves their already amazing software. VERY happy with their entire line :)

My wife and I bought this and love it. I am a little old to enjoy it so much, but I loved it so much, my mother-in-law got me the another car for Xmas!

As an engineer, I can really appreciate all the work that went into this, and can only imagine the iterations - but Anki nailed it. I a excited to see what the future of consumer robotics will bring. This is just a taste.

Excelent game but limited for use

    • Written by from Buenos Aires

Batteries last in short time, there is no switch to power off the cars, so every time you start to play must charge the vehicles. The cable provided in the starter kit has capability to charge only 3 vehicles, so if you buy the four as I did, you can't charge them all at the same time. I can't understand why a toy with such level of technology at and expensive cost ($340 id you collect the 4 vehicles) is made so incomplete.
With iPhone 5 you have to turn the passcode lock off, otherwise the car you are using disconnects during the race
