    Nest, Not what us used to be...

    I purchased my Nest 1st generation 5 years ago, and it 'was' a phenomenal piece of equipment. It managed my heat pump, heating and cooling requirements better than my old mercury driven thermostat... The Nest DID save me money on my electric bill. However, Nest must have recently had an update to their device which I'm finding 'I cannot manage my FAN air function.' During the daylight hours when my system is demanding AC, Nest operates as it should by providing AC. In the evenings when it's too cool for AC and still too warm for HEAT, my FAN does not turn off... It constantly runs even after I manually command Nest to 'OFF.' I find I need to manually turn the AC, HEAT PUMP unit to OFF to force the fan yo stop operating. Hence, I'm no longer saving money on electric/heating bill. Note: For some strange reason, this issue is only a problem during the evening hours. I'm considering removing my Nest and replacing it with one b their competitors.

    AVOID NEST; Coolest look; Inferior functionality

    This is a very cool looking, poorly designed thermostat.

    If you are looking for a thermo that is easy to use this is NOT it.

    1. There is no on-off switch; that's basic. I want to turn the effing system off. There is no simple, obvious way to do that. I want to turn the effing fan off. There is no simple, obvious way to do that.
    2. No tech support, except FAQs and the "community." Clearly cheap for apple. Clearly inadequate for a consumer.
    3. Navigating the system is cumbersome, limited, sequential screens.

    Do yourself a favor: Get a Honeywell or some other brand that does not look so cool but that has a good display and can be easily used.

    Artistic physical Design but has technical issues

    The Nest learning thermostat is very attractive when installed on your wall. It is easy to install and the instructions are very clear and quite simple.to follow. I took me about 20 minutes to complete the installation and have my system running. As advertised it will learn your schedule automatically or you can program it manually. You can adjust it remotely using your iPhone app or from any pc or apple computer after you download the software from Nest.
    The bad news is that even though it is advertised as a thermostat which is supposed to control the temperature, it is absolutely terrible at doing this. For example in the COOL mode I set the temperature to 76 degrees. The room temperature has to rise until almost 78 before the thermostat switches on the cooling equipment and then fall to almost 74 degrees to turn it off. This huge 4 degree "dead band" does not provide a comfortable living space since you go from warm to "freezing" rather than a comfortable 0.5 degree differential. This also increases energy usage. Contacting Nest only confirmed that this is the way the thermostat was designed to operate. Very poor answer and I have since replaced Nest with another manufacturer's model which operates to my liking, I do not recommend this product.

    This thing never works, to top that off, tech support never gets back to you.

    What a waste of $250, I will never recommend this product, cool features are worthless if products does not function.

    Before buying, I used Nest's website to confirm if my thermostat hookups were compatible. An easy, but incredibly important step.
    The installation was simple, but I took my time since I wanted everything to be perfect.

    A negative surprise: It may've been my router (Motorola Surfboard SBG6580), but I found I had to Broadcast my SSID (router name). Most people have this broadcasting all the time, but I prefer to not do so. Nest would not connect for me unless I set the router to the default (allow broadcasting).

    Note: I didn't call Nest to confirm, but I could've.

    Once that change was made, everything connected and setup was smooth as silk. The UI is incredible in my opinion, and I also took the time to learn more about my house (had just bought this house) when I received prompts that I was unfamiliar with (like whether I had 2-stage heating). Nest's site helped with this also, but I still had to do some research on my own, which was not a problem.

    Since then, our AC is running much less often and somehow the house is incredibly more cool. For the first time in my life, I am comfortable with 80°… I usually kept it at 75° in this house with the old Thermostat and in previous houses. I honestly don't understand what all Nest does differently, but I am surprisingly more comfortable at these higher temps now… with is a great feeling when the weather outside is usually 100° or above this time of year.

    So even though I still do wish Nest could find my wifi without the Broadcasting option turned on, the benefit FAR outweighs the single edge-case drawback that I mentioned.

    Also, I want you to hear this: I ALMOST didn't order the Nest due to the negative feedback some posters were leaving here on this site. I eventually ran across another review that more or less discredited a huge number of 1-star posts by explaining the reason for their complaints (he was an HVAC tech, he explained, and his post was technical and well written - boiled down to these 1-star raters not having compatible systems, which would've been detected simply by following the guide on Nest's site). So I went for it and am so very glad I did.

    Works perfect with the iPhone, iPad or any iOS. I like that you can control the device while you are away. It has more features then I care to use but play around with it, you can definitely save money.

    Recommended!

    This is a huge improvement over all traditional or programmable thermostats. The ability to remotely access and command it is reason enough to own one or more, if you have multiple zones, as you can command or manage them from a single location, even after you've gone to bed. It's ability to sense when you have left the premises means you'll never again heat or cool an empty house because you forgot to set it before leaving. You'll get useful reports of your most recent 10 days of energy use, and will wish it was at least a full month to compare with your utility bill. It's relatively simple to install and set up initially, but has enough depth of options to satisfy your "control freak" tendencies. When auxiliary heat is needed, it isn't smart enough to keep the heat pump running continuously, but is otherwise pretty with it. Since it is online and can be continuously updated with new software, it should get even better with time.

    Great product, but don't upgrade yet, especially if you live in the South

    Have had my nest almost a year. Installed it the end of last summer. Love all its features except 2:

    The first is the way it plugs into the wall. It is very easy for family members to knock it off the wall while trying to set it. It is better set from your iPhone. This would not be an issue if people were not playing with it so much do to the main issue in the next paragraph.


    The main issue with the Nest is the lack of ability to control humidity settings. My old thermostat allowed this. I have discovered that living in the South, this is a very important feature for comfort.

    When the nest turns on to cool the house, the humid cold air is annoyingly uncomfortable. Turning up the ambient room temperature to correct this results in a room that feels to warm after the AC stops blowing. So either you feel a little too cool when the AC is blowing, or a little too warm when it's not. This is not extreme, but just enough to be annoying if you spend time in your house. I don't notice it when I return form work and go to bed, but I do notice it on weekends and days off when I spend time in the house this summer.

    I am well past the learning curve for a new device, and have not solved this, but I do see where the Nest measures the humidity. So it should be possible for the company to allow us to control it.

    Since a basic wired thermostat has a humidity control feature, I am surprised that Nest does not. If I was not so lazy, I would re install my old thermostat. If Nest solves this problem, I will upgrade.

    Not worth the money

    First - Nest lacks the most basic of thermostat functions: Hold Temp. Enthusiasts will tell you the Nest features eliminate the need for it, but Friday was a holiday and there was no way to tell the thing not to run the usual weekday program.

    Second - Auto Schedule makes random unexpected changes. The ability to confirm those changes would be great. My thermostat decided that I didn't want the temp to drop to 70 degrees at 10 PM anymore and cleared that part of the program even though if I made that adjustment, I only did it once. So Auto Schedule is off.

    Third - Auto Away overrides the schedule. So rather than having a comfortable temp in the house when I get home from work, like the program is set for, the thermostat goes to Away when I am at work and I have to interact with it to get it to run the program. What is the point of a schedule if the thermostat doesn't follow it? So Auto Away is off.

    The novelty features of Nest don't really work. I'm pretty sure that the thermostat is not smarter than I am, but it thinks it is and does things it thinks I want. I shouldn't have to interact with my thermostat regularly to get it to do what I want it to, but that is what the Nest requires.

    There are less expensive wifi connected thermostats that do what the Nest does. They don't have the fancy metal ring around them, but that is about all you are getting for the extra money. I wouldn't buy another one.

    The NEST Thermostat and NEST Protect.... the truth.



    I have owned both of these item since they came on the market. I thought they would be good to have to protect our home and allow us to communicate with the items and control our home while away. After owning both of these for some time now this is our experience.



    Our home:

    We live in rural Ontario. We have an all electric home with 200 Amp service and a 15KV generator to supply power when the power goes out. Our ISP provided a Siemens Modem and behind it we have an Apple Extreme 801g/n router to provide wifi. We now also have a UPS to handle the wifi until the generator starts during a power failure. Even in a power failure our ISP provides Internet access.





    The NEST Thermostat:

    It was easy to install and worked right out of the box. It is easy to use in person and controls our electric heating just fine. It was only after a power failure we began to see the issues. The NEST does not like to reconnect to our wifi after a power failure. I have always had to wait until I return home, walk to The NEST and select “wifi” and press it. Then it connects. The NEST is only 3 meters from our wifi router and signal strength is reported to be “excellent” at 86% when tested. So signal is not the issue. To get around this I’ve installed a UPS so the wifi never drops. This has solved this issue it would appear at the moment. No battery issues so far. Other issues: It has no idea where we live. I had to trick it during setup as our location is not available. Occasionally it complains about setup issues that when checked don't exist. On occasion it will not light up when approached even though this feature is turned on. I have to poke it to get it to light up. All else appears OK. Do I trust it for an extended vacation in the winter: NOT ON YOUR LIFE.



    The NEST Protect:

    We purchased 2 of these when they hit the market. Installation was easy and they both worked out of the box. The issues with both of these units are the never-ending stream of false alarms, always when we are away. We rush home to find NOTHING.!! Even while writing this our bedroom NEST Protect went off telling us about smoke in the bedroom that isn't there. We’ve received Emails telling us our bedroom is full of smoke. When we arrive home our cat is sleeping on the bed so we can safely assume the alarm in the house did nothing. We’ve had alarms of power outage when there was none. We’ve had alarms of fire when there was none. THEY ARE A PAIN.



    The NEST Support:

    In a word: it’s non-existent. When you refer to the web site there is a “Contact Us” area but it only takes you to another page which lists HELP and The Community. In other words “You bought it and you’re stuck with it and we don’t want to talk to you to help you with your problems”. If you do leave comments in The Community someone will answer but it’s days later.



    I would in no way recommend either of these products to anyone but I did buy them and yes I’m stuck with them. I may end up dumping them on eBay and going back to Honeywell products that actually do work.

    Great in theory- terrible in reality

    If you are soul owners of a home and have no guests- nest rocks. Otherwise think twice. First thing is anyone over the age of 50 or isn't totally mac savy won't know how the heck to operate it and you'll be graced by crazy energy bills because guests self adjust the settings without you knowing- fun times:) That's what it comes down to, if you have guests in your home, and live in your home with a constant stream of friends and family- this system is not realistic and will end up quadrupling your energy bill.

    Great Product. But Let's Get Practical

    I purchased my Nest a week ago. So far it is running as advertised. No issues. I won't talk here about long-term reliability, because I've only had it a week. I would, however, like to add some perspective on installation - in particular, installation time.

    I've read a number of reviews that say you can install the Nest in 15 minutes or so. Be careful about such rosy estimates. First, you have to open the box, get familiar with the contents, and read the instructions. That takes several minutes alone. Once you do that, you have to get to your heating/AC unit and find a way to turn it off. Not all units have a simple "off" switch-mine certainly didn't. So you will either have to find the circuit breaker for your heating unit or the power cord. Depending on where your unit is located, this can take a few minutes. Then I had to disconnect the old thermostat, identify the wires, and use the compatibility check on Nest's web site to confirm the Nest would work for me. Again, several minutes. Then I had to attach the Nest to the wall. As you might guess, the holes for the Nest screws did not match with the holes for the old thermostat, so I had to drill new holes for the Nest screws. Finally got the holes drilled, attached the Nest to the wall, connected the wires, plugged heating/AC unit back in, and, voila! Success! But the entire process took well over an hour - not including the wireless setup and software download. This isn't Nest's fault - it simply reflects the reality of safely installing a sophisticated piece of equipment.

    Again, the unit is working fine, which is why I am giving it 5 stars. But don't rush into this installation thinking it will be a 10-15 minute job. If you do, you will become impatient, make mistakes, and find yourself unfairly hating a very good product.

    Great Design, horrible product with major issues

    The Nest has the beauty of Apple design but poor quality product

    The product installs easily and support is good

    After running fine for a couple months I came home to both my furnace and air conditioner running at the same time. This was for three days and house was 90 degrees. The energy costs alone are greater than any potential savings. The danger factor alone for this known problem is high and I can't believe they don't recall the product.

    I received no alerts or anything on the iphone app. It only pretends to be intelligent for minor features. It is has little intelligence for reliably heating and cooling your house which is the main job.

    I went back to a $25 Honeywell thermostat from Home Depot and everything is fine. Nest will replace unit but how could you trust the device.

    Can't hold comfortable setting

    It looks good and the remote interface isn't bad but, but it allows the temperature to swing almost 2 degrees in either direction of the set temperature. This leaves you feeling too hot or too cold most of the time. It also make the set and forget ability of a programmable thermostat useless because you have to constantly adjust it. Going back to my ugly, no remote interface Honeywell.

    Monitored My Home From 1,800 Miles Away

    Spent the winter in Arizona and monitored my home's temperature in Carman, MB via iPhone, iPad and a PC. Great! Still can't believe they haven't built in a notice system that would send an email if furnace fails to start on demand and temperature drops. Given that one's login credentials include the email address, it seems like the infrastructure is all there. Someone just needs to activate it.
