    Simple to install, works flawlessly

    • Written by from Media

Even the packaging on this product was very well done. Installed in under 15 minutes. I used the back plate to prevent patching and painting the area behind my previous programmable thermostat. The setup is elegant. I have a forced air system with gas for heat, and so far I have only used the A/C portion. I can control the thermostat from my iPhone, iPad, computer or old school - right on the thermostat. The quality is exceptional and certainly justifies a higher cost. Not sure $250 is the magic number but if you look at it from a cost savings perspective, it will likely pay for itself eventually, but not quickly. I also own Philips Hue lighting and the iOS software for the Nest is significantly better. I did not have to call technical support so I can't really comment there. Easy to adjust whether you are in the house or on the go. Obvious Apple design influence. Bottom line: looks great, works as advertised, software is well designed, easy to install, and great to be able to control remotely. I have not used it long enough to get a sense of the self learning benefits, but tracking is easy with the software provided.

The Nest - Problem after problem

    • Written by from Wayne

The Nest upgrade to v 3.5.1 (7.1.13) software has created massive connectivity issues (failures) for me (Apple Routers) and others. See Nest community form. Very disappointing product.

    Horrible time with Nest...

    • Written by from highland beach

I picked up two Nest thermostats last week. One is working fine, the other not so much. My AC units in the home are all the same. I sent in pictures of my thermostat was told I was good to go, etc...

At this point I have returned 4 units... I was told each time my terminal (the thing the wires plug into that mounts to the wall) had a bad "G" connection N26 error and to return it for a replacement. I was finally told that small voltage spikes can kill the base unit/terminal and cause it to need replacing, a common issue?? Seems odd that a $20 20 year old thermostat can take it but the $250 Nest can't?

I then was told my system is incompatible?? But its working fine on the other one with the same AC model unit... Makes no sense.

I then call in my AC guy and spend $200+ on some troubleshooting to be told the same thing about bad base unit/terminal / voltage spikes replaced the base again 4th time and it worked for about 8 hours. I wake up at 3am hot the fan is not running ac is frozen... Check the wiring under equipment on the nest and guess what!? "G" connection N26 error like every-other time. No solution given when I called this morning.

I then called concerned about my working unit, will it go down so easily with a small spike?

I was given no solution and told to return all of the units if I was really concerned... FAIL. I will not be recommending the Nest thermostat to anyone regardless of their experience with technology or AC units.

    It's a Struggle!

    • Written by from Lawrence

Be warned, if you don't work a 9-5 job, with a set schedule and regimented weekends you will CONSTANTLY BE FIGHTING with nest to keep your house comfortable.

Nest is constantly changing your schedule to adapt to how you've set it i the past. An extra day off in the middle of the week (like a sick day) and you'll find yourself shouting at the wall every 20 minutes because nest keeps raising the temp back up to 78! The worst thing about this $250 thermostat is that it lacks the basic function of a 'hold' feature.

Of course you can turn the learning part off but it is not easy to do this and once you do, well, you realize you've paid 6 times more for a thermostat because it has a feature that you've had to disable.

We've woken up sweating in the middle of the night and found that Nest had decided to turn itself up 5 degrees.

On the plus side it looks cool and was easy to install.

On the downside in practice it is annoying and lacks features like a hold button that is essential for anyone who's schedule is not EXACTLY the same every day.

Excellent device: Easy to use, & Smart device!

    • Written by from Sonora

Product works as described. When I travel, when I'm gone, NEST, "knows" and saves energy. Also it seems to update it's software behind the scenes, because my 1st generation thermostat showed the "airwave" symbol on screen indicating it had shut down the cooler, and was circulating. Installation was a breeze, it told me on-screen, which wires I did wrong, and how to correct it. My wife and I live in a planned community, and I have been given energy-consumption data for dozens of various sized homes and units. We're the only ones using NEST, and our energy consumption is conspicuously better than our neighbors. Easy to set, simple intuitive screens, monthly energy reports, the ability to control our thermostat from a smart-phone or tablet device where-ever we are, and arrive home to our ideal selected temperature.... It "learns" our habits and we now leave it alone. What's not to like?

    Works as advertised... only better!

    • Written by from Tampa

We've been using our Nest for 4 months. It's completely learned our habits. It knows that in the morning it needs to cool down to compensate for my hair dryer, that Sunday mornings no one is home and it turns completely off. It knows our every move every day of the week and adjusts for it. Already seeing significant savings in our electric bill.

We had ours professionally installed and I could tell it was something we would not have been able to do. However, our installer had no idea how to set it up on our home network or connect to our wifi, but that part was a real breeze.

My husband and I both love being able to control it from our computers, iPad, or iPhones no matter where we are.

Only tip is to really give it a work out in the first two weeks so that it completely learns you patterns. You have to pay attention to your comfort all day long and tweak it all the time so it learns what you will be wanting it to do for you. The more you do, the more automatic it will make the adjustments in the future.

Excellent Product & Very Easy to Install !!!

I love the Nest Learning Thermostat. It worked exactly as advertised and was very easy to install. They even provide you the tools to do the work ! The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because of the limited reports you can get. It would be nice to be able to get fancy reports and graph. Other than that, works perfectly and the auto-learn features works great. It's nice to be able to remote control the unit from anywhere ! Love it ! Love it ! Love it !

    • Written by from Memphis

I received two nest thermostats for Christmas and they are incredible devices. Simple to install, easy to configure, and has saved us $$$. After the first couple of weeks learning our active household schedule we haven't touched the thermostat = it just works!!! The clean simple aesthetics look amazing in the house and everyone that walks in wants to know everything about them.

Buy these, you will not regret it one moment...

    Nest Gen. 2

    • Written by from El Dorado Hills

I recently installed 3 of these and love the simplicity and ease of use. The design is very cool- not a surprise since this company CEO is Tony Fadell - the man who was largely responsible for the original iPod design. Took a little work to connect properly as 2 of my locations needed a common wire which I had to also connect at the HVAC control panel up in the attic. Easy to do but took an extra 15 minutes. Now that they are up and running they operate flawlessly. I love being able to control from my iPhone/iPad as my wife and I travel often and can easily control our HVAC system if we want to cool/heat our home before we return home.

When they upgrade again (3rdgen) hopefully these shortcoming will be corrected.

Makes saving energy more interesting and fun.

    • Written by from Thunder Bay

I replaced my old programmable with the Nest after reading a great deal of positive reviews. They were right, it's just fantastic. I believe it is saving energy. The temperature feels more constant and more comfortable overall. It leaves little to be desired, except a few things. For one, the app that controls it should provide more information and graphs on the main screen. It was easy to program. I would recommend to anyone that can afford one. It is said they pay for themselves in less than two years. Time will tell.

    Nest not as advertised

    • Written by from Salisbury Mills

Not satisfied with operation after 2 calls to Nest support. 2 issues:
1-if not at home thermostat does go to auto away but it also automatically turns itself on and heats to set temperature even when not at home. It is supposed to stay at auto away until it senses someone arrives home.
2- when at home if set temp is turned down manually it automatically goes back up to set temperature....wasting energy.
I am sorry that I spent $500 on two thermostats that I find have never operated as advertised.
I would not recommend this product to anyone.
