    Too much trouble - energy cost increased.

    First off, I'm very tech savvy, over 20 years in electronics design and software engineering, so I'm capable of following basic installation instructions. I was quite interested in the Nest thermostat. My house is heated and cooled by a newer heat pump. I dutifully took a digital photo of the connections to my old thermostat and sent them to Nest. When i called, I was assured that the 2nd generation thermostat would work fine with my system. Nest even sent me an email with wiring instructions. This would be a snap, I thought.

    All seemed fine at first. Then, during a twice-yearly HVAC service, the tech asked me why I had the emergency heat on all the time the unit was running. I was puzzled. He showed me that it was indeed running on emergency heat. After a couple of calls to Nest tech support, I gave up, reinstalled the original thermostat, and returned the Nest for a refund. Then - insult to injury - I received an electric bill that was nearly 3x normal - emergency heat is expensive! I could have bought 2 more Nests with the additional energy cost. By the way I checked, double checked, and confirmed with Nest support that everything was wired and configured correctly.

    Not a happy outcome.

    FAIL

    Don't be fooled by the shiny, sleek look. This this is an epic fail that can cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars if you live in a cold climate. This is an expensive consumer electronic device and NOT an HVAC device. The customer support is non existent apple-like "geniuses" who are totally untrained for the problems this thing generates
    I had constant stop WiFi connectivity issues and several losses of power to the furnace and AC and low battery warnings.
    I lost count of how many times I came home to a boiling or freezing house
    One day, It failed on a nasty cold snap and my water pipes froze, my basement flooded with cold frozen water and destroyed my finished basement and everything in it.
    The HVAC guy said it was the nest. He refuses to sell them because of the constant problems that can easily become catastrophic.
    Don't be an idiot like me. READ THE REVIEWS and stay away!!

    Buy a cheap honeywell or something that is designed as a real thermostat. The aren't shiny, but they work. This POS does NOT!

    Nest Issues--New Paperweight

    I bought my Nest approximately 8 months ago. It worked perfectly until 2 nights ago. It then started turning on the heat and cooling at the same time. My a/c-heat technician says the baseplate shorted out and now won't work. Crazy money for such an imperfect and short-lived product. I gave it 2 stars solely because I like the visual design so much--otherwise, it is a waste of dough.

    Nice Idea but Bad Product

    Same as the previous review I woke up one morning during the recent cold snap to the downstairs (where the Nest T-stat was located) being in the 40's and found that the Nest thermostat had stopped communicating with my furnace. To be clear both other zones in my house were working so it was clearly a problem with the Nest. After disconnecting it and rechecking the wiring (which was fine) the unit was reinstalled and it worked again. Two nights later the same thing happened again. After a quick internet search I found that this a problem with the Nest on some types of HVAC systems. Once I installed the old (non-Nest) thermostat everything worked as it should. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this product.

    Nest is Junk

    Woke up one morning freezing and found that the Nest "learning" thermostat had stopped communicating with my furnace. Tried to turn the heat up and received a low battery message. Called support and they assured me that after charging the thing with a phone charger that it would work again. Temps went to -15 in MN and I woke to a temp of 49 degrees inside my house. Called customer service again and spent over an hour trying to correct issue until they decided it was time to send me a warranty replacement. It took over 3 days for this to arrive and the customer service rep told me that I should go to the hardware store and purchase a traditional thermostat if I hadn't saved my old one to keep my pipes from freezing in my home! Warranty replacement still does not work, I've spent way more on electric bills to run space heaters while the furnace was out, missed a day of work to install emergency thermostat so my pipes wouldn't freeze, I have an 11 year old son who couldn't sleep on a school night because it was bitterly cold in our house, spent hours on the phone with nest "technicians" . Do yourself a favor and buy a normal thermostat, I wish I would have.

    Poorly Engineered Product

    As previous posters found out with hefty install bills from HVAC techs, being electronic / electrical literate I decided to do the install myself. If you are not colour blind and can meter voltage at wiring it should be a no brainer to troubleshoot or transfer wires off an existing thermostat right? Wrong. These things indeed have baseplate resistance or bad terminals on them, the firmware is not up to recognizing that either - I went through 3 and about 8hrs of troubleshooting, ended up running completely new thermostat wiring from the furnace controller just to rule out any resistance off the old wiring. In the end I think that did the trick, these things require clean 24V at RC / Y1 / Common or forget about it. And of course each time I put the old thermo back in on the old wiring, it worked! But I could never get the thing out of these E30 errors, either no power to Rc or Y1. Who knows, 3rd product was the charm I guess and new wiring (18 gauge). My local Home Depot gets more back than they say stay out. However, thumbs up to the software, they got that down right. I should also say I put in 2 Nest Protect C02 units, both function perfectly.

    Fantastic times 3!

    Have had one installed in our weekend home, and recently installed two more in our primary home. Installation is so intuitive, even I can do it in about 10-15 minutes per. I've always turned off the learning/auto-away functions and use it only to adjust when we'll be away, and to turn back on a few hours before we return. Very elegant app, and great looking with any decor. Love the nests.

    Does not work in cold weather

    I have had HVAC technician talk twice with NEST to get it to operate correctly. In single digit weather the system would only blow cold air. Change system back to Honeywell thermostat and house is warm. Also, does not work with changeable fan speed system. I gave it a year to learn but to no avail.

    Great thermostat

    I bought the first Generation and it worked well till they upgaded the software and everything went crazy and I was about to get rid of it because I couldn't find a solution and I notice that most new thermostats require the C wire so I changed the wiring to 5 wire and added the C wire and everything is working great since I made the changes so hopefully this may help other to fix there problems.
    If it wasn't for the problem I had I would of gave it a 5.

    NEST ROCKS !!

    Well if that wasn't the easiest installation I have ever done, even for a woman...lol
    I had it up and running within 20 minutes and it works Excellent so far.
    Every thing is explained to a "T" and pretty much child proof..
    I'm on my way for the first day as to a schedule for my NEST.. will inform you all at a later date.
    VERY HAPPY so far .... I love the fact that you can control your heat from your phone app..
    especially if you have pets! A++

    Does not work!

    After purchasing the Nest thermostat at my local Apple store (along with $2,500 worth of computers), I installed the Nest in my vacation condo so I could turn up the heat before arriving after a prolonged absence. Three days after I left, the wifi quit. On returning to my cold condo, I installed a new router. A few days later over the holidays, the Nest wifi controll quit with a "low battery" warning. (The router is not the problem.) With sub-zero temps outside, the Nest defaults to a dumb thermostat...a very expensive dumb thermostat. At -8 degrees F, can it be trusted to keep the pipes from freezing? Bottom line: easy to install, very pretty, doesn't work. (Apple: warn your customers!)

    Use Your MAIN WiFi Account

    I have been using the NEST 2nd Gen Thermostat for over 10 months now and LOVE IT! It "learns" and can be "programmed" to a set schedule if you want. I have mine set to start warming things up 30 min before my alarm goes off, nice to wake up to a warm house.

    Wi-Fi Heads Up:
    I changed my home Wi-Fi to the new Apple Time Capsule (Tower) about 3 months ago and a little issue showed up.

    When I got the new Time Capsule I set up a "guest" wi-fi account and used that for the NEST, this did not work well. After a while the NEST stopped communicating on-line, turns out the security Apple builds in for a "guest" wi-fi account is actually pretty good and that interfered with the ability for the NEST to do it's thing over an extended period of time. I simply set the NEST up on my MASTER wi-fi account and it has not skipped a beat since (over 2 months now on the new account). Working PERFECT!!

    Being able to control from the app is awesome! If you travel, about an hour before getting home simply switch it to "home" from "auto away" and when you walk in, temp will be perfect!

    Great thermostat!

    After months of struggling with a thermostat that I never seemed to understand, the second generation Nest Learning Thermostat was born, and I bought it!

    I love this thermostat. I've had it for about 6 months now and have no complaints. Install was super easy, connecting was easy too. I love being able to check the temperature from my phone at all times and being able to warm up the house if my day ends early for some reason.

    Auto away is great. Sometimes when I make a quick stop at home I find myself hiding from the thermostat so that it doesn't see me and turn on. (Frequent on and off of HVAC equipment is bad)

    I have had no power issues or errors appear on the nest. I have had few network issues but those fell on the cable company (my laptop and smart tv wouldn't connect either)

    The bottom line is I just wanted a thermostat that I knew how to use so that I would actually use it. I love my Nest.

    Really wanted these to work

    For what it's worth, I'm a software engineer actively working in the "connected devices" world. Point being, I SHOULD have above average technical know-how.

    Summary of installation for TWO thermostats:
    Wiring 20 minutes total - easy
    WiFi config - 40 minutes (really painful - no exaggeration) AND I had to change my router security to mixed mode before it work. I have a 3 year old Cisco router. I've had no problems with any other device in my house and I have probably 12+ "things" connected all of the time.

    Next morning
    - Error displayed on the Nest and my upstairs was at 61 degrees.
    - Nest support ran through some tests and determined my furnace had an issue and I should call my HVAC guy.
    - Just google "N26 No power to G wire detected."
    - This furnace is a heat pump and apparently didn't provide enough power to keep the Nest happy. I replaced my old thermostat and everything was just fine.

    During the next week
    - My Gas force air furnace worked great and the info coming off of the Nest was exactly what I had wanted/expected. ...until it stopped connecting to my WiFi. It was only online for about 5 days total.
    - After a couple of additional attempts I gave up.

    Bottom line: WiFi connectivity is key for this product and both units had general connectivity problems in my house where other devices seem not to. Before installing on a heat bump, do some additional research. You might be better off with a non-programmable anyway.

    Update killed thermostat.

    Newest update causes the battery to run down and shut down. In the cold north east no thermostat is a big concern, but not to Nest. With no battery you can not even manually turn on your heat!!!! Frozen pipes while you are on vaca? Elderly in the house? They claim to have a fix but upon calling they admitted they can't even roll back to a working version.

    Do not buy a Nest

    The Nest is not reliable. We installed ours 2 wks ago and it does not work - we are presently freezing in our home. Yesterday, we came home from work as usual and it was mysteriously in "away" mode. Today, we came home and it had the air conditioner and furnace running at same time. The house was freezing. We turned off the air conditioner at the electrical panel - we tried to do it at the Nest but it did not work, so the only option was to flip the breaker. We then put a thermometer beside the Nest and saw that it reads 8 degrees less than is displayed on the Nest, meaning that the Nest does not properly measure the ambient temp. We went to their website for troubleshooting - it is a useless piece of fluff. We called their 1-800 # and did not get service after almost an hour on hold. So, here we sit, freezing and disappointed, in our house in November! We will return to Honeywell asap. Do not get a Nest!

    Stopped working

    I bought the Nest about 6 months ago and had it professionally installed along with a brand new HVAC system. It worked fine until about a week ago went it got cold outside. The Nest had both the heat and the AC running at the same time. I had to go out and pull the breaker to the AC unit. I had the HVAC company come out today and take a look at it. The confirmed that the nest was sending the signal to the AC unit to turn on. They could not do anything about besides leave the breaker pulled. The other option is to remove the nest and replace with another controller (not a nest). I will now try calling Nest to see what they will do. I am clearly experiencing what is happening to a lot of people. Will be interesting to see how Nest handles it. Makes me mad because I really like the way the nest looked and functioned but clearly this is a huge problem that will most likely have me throwing the nest in the trash.

    Issues with backplates can show up any time

    I purchased my second generation Nest in November 2012. I enjoyed 10 months of efficient use and loved the product, until one night in August while running in cooling mode, it started making a simultaneous call for heat and caused my HVAC system to go completely haywire. Emergency HVAC calls and $700 later it was determined it was determined the Nest had gone bad. At that point Nest didn't tell me about the significant number of issues with backplates that had been cropping up -- I got a replacement that also failed. This time it started running my air conditioning in heating mode when it was 30 degrees out. My third backplate also went bad. The problem seems to stem from Nest's use of FETs which makes it highly intolerant of normal voltage swings found in HVAC units. The nightmare of trying to get Nest to refund my purchase for this sudden incompatibility has been painful -- more than 4 hours of waiting with tech support. The Nest is a great idea, but the company is showing real issues with product quality, reliability and support that needs to be addressed.

    It‘s not compatible with baseboard heaters

    If you have a baseboard heater forget about nest! We couldn't get any technician to install it here in Canada, nobody wanted to do it and they said that we need to convert our system to 24 volts because Nest is designed for 24 volt systems (furnaces type setups).

    One of my two Nest thermostats has suddenly stopped controlling its furnace

    After two months of apparently working as advertised, one of my two Nest thermostats quit controlling its furnace this evening.

    It was set at 18 Celsius, but the furnace just kept running and running: 19 degrees, 20 degrees, 21 degrees, 22 degrees. I could control the thermostat from my iPad and iPhone, but it did not control the furnace. I turned the thermostat completely off, the furnace still kept running.

    No one answering the phones at a Nest support in the middle of the night.

    So I've turned the furnace completely off. At -2 outside, that's not a great plan, but nothing else to do.
