    AMAZING PRODUCT THAT HAS GONE DOWNHILL IN 7 MONTHS

    I have been a NEST devotee for 3 yrs. We have 2 installed and they worked with amazing performance until about 7 months ago when software upgrades began. Now the app shows OFFLINE randomly, the thermostat is connected through my Airport (all my WIFI stuff is Apple and nearly new) so I have no remote control. Then I have to touch the dial to get it to connect thru the app. What are they thinking?? NEST support has become a little more responsive in the last month, but even after warranty replacements, the two new units act the same. APPLE--you need to pull this product from your stores until NEST PROVES they have fixed these issues. There are HUNDREDS of threads on the NEST community forum, on these reviews, and on public blogs about this horrendous issue. There is no recourse here but to strangle their business. These problems will occur to every one who buys these, it is just a matter of time. Please pull this product until they get this fixed!

    Don't buy!

    I owned it for a year and a half without issues. After automatic update on the thermostat, battery gets drained which results in your hvac shutting down. In Canada, it's not a good thing when you have kids and outside temperature is -20 Celsius...
    I contacted Nest who could not troubleshoot and solve the problem . They sent replacement unit for free but had same battery issue. There was no work done on furnace or change on internet router, problem was clearly with the product software update. Save your money and buy product that does not look as nice but WORKS, AND IT IS NOT THE NEST.

    Neat when working...until it doesn't - caution!

    1-year after install the Nest failed.

    Came home on a freezing day to the Air Conditioner being told to run by the thermostat. The Nest could not shut the unit down - on/off = no change - had to turn off the circuit breaker. Their technical support confirmed the base plate had failed and they sent out a new one. The new base plate fixed the issue. Research shows I'm not the only one with this issue.

    This kind of failure can damage property since I live in a state with climate extremes. It's not worth the risk and I'll be getting rid of it.

    Nest learning thermostat

    Don't bother it's a waste of time it continues to go off line and I cannot run the programs I set
    I believe Honeywell has a better system with half the price

    I can't believe how lousy this is, and they have no support, I can't get human on the line, i have no AC and live in FLORIDA, I had to change it back to the old thermostat for the AC to work.
    Its great when it works but down 3 times in 6 months!!!! BRUTAL!!.
    I never had a single issue with my old thermostat in MY LIFE.

    Very Dissapointed

    The Nest is a real disappointment to us. It simply tries to be too smart and generally gets everything wrong. The advanced functions like "scheduling" and "away from home" never get it right and it is essentially impossible to just set a temperature have the Nest leave it alone. This company obviously has too many computer programmers and not enough human beings. It certainly does not deserve customers. Awful product.

    Unstable

    I normally don't write reviews but this product is so unstable it desires one. After owning my device now for over a year, I can tell you that my device is rarely online, Nest customer support is not helpful and my hydro/heating bills have actually increased from using this product.

    Don't bother with this product

    The good things - nice design, looks cool, easy to use, common sense user interface.

    Now for the bad things. It does not work! Nest has replaced my thermostat one time. The issues are with its ability to be a smart thermostat. It is not. The away function does not work. While Nest will tell you the software only kicks in during the daytime hours, it decides if you are away at all hours of the day or night. For example, at 6PM, it decides that I am away even though it turned on when I came home. It will also go into away mode every hour or so during the evening. So, if you change the temp at 8PM, by 8:30 it will reset to the temp for away mode. And, every morning when you wake it is in away mode.

    To solve that, I decided to use the "schedule" mode. That does not work either. If you only set a single temp and never touch it again, it works fine. If, however, you ever push the temp up or down slightly, it remembers that and constantly resets itself to the new temp. I can't recall the number of times it resets to 65 in the AM, or resets at other times on its own. It takes several times of over riding the temp to get it to reschedule the right temp.

    Quite simply, this smart thermostat is stupid. I would avoid all their products. While the shifting temp is an inconvenience, I would not trust their smoke or CO detectors.

    DON'T BOTHER WITH NEST

    The Nest thermostat looks sleek. Unfortunately it doesn't do what it should. After about 8 calls to Nest (always very pleasant advisers), my thermostat still goes "Offline" without explanation. This means that I cannot control the temperature remotely, which is the whole point of the thing. Save your money and by a much cheaper one at Home Depot.

    Awful for Vacation Home

    Though this thermostat is very cool looking, and the learning feature interesting, it lacks two basic feature that make it terrible for a vacation home.
    First, it does not have a low temperature alert that emails you when the temperature drops below a certain level. This would give you a chance to try to get ahead of freezing pipes.
    Second there is no temperature hold feature. Sometimes I want to just set a temperature and leave it there... The most basic of functions.
    People have been complaining about these issues for the past couple of years on the Nest boards and the complaints are falling on deaf ears.
    Going to try to sell my 2 nests and get Honeywells.

    Nest is UNRELIABLE

    STAY AWAY from this product if you intend to use in a weekend house, or any home that isn't occupied everyday. IT is unreliable. The battery keeps going dead. The patches they've sent to fix are worthless. do NOT buy this product. It is TOO unreliable.

    You have been warned

    Went through multiple emails making sure NEST was compatible with my heating system. Had the NEST professionally installed. On the 2nd day it just started blowing cold air. It is 40 degrees outside now and 42 degrees inside and I have to have the old system installed back on. Horrible gimmicky gadget here.

    Nest, Not what us used to be...

    I purchased my Nest 1st generation 5 years ago, and it 'was' a phenomenal piece of equipment. It managed my heat pump, heating and cooling requirements better than my old mercury driven thermostat... The Nest DID save me money on my electric bill. However, Nest must have recently had an update to their device which I'm finding 'I cannot manage my FAN air function.' During the daylight hours when my system is demanding AC, Nest operates as it should by providing AC. In the evenings when it's too cool for AC and still too warm for HEAT, my FAN does not turn off... It constantly runs even after I manually command Nest to 'OFF.' I find I need to manually turn the AC, HEAT PUMP unit to OFF to force the fan yo stop operating. Hence, I'm no longer saving money on electric/heating bill. Note: For some strange reason, this issue is only a problem during the evening hours. I'm considering removing my Nest and replacing it with one b their competitors.

    AVOID NEST; Coolest look; Inferior functionality

    This is a very cool looking, poorly designed thermostat.

    If you are looking for a thermo that is easy to use this is NOT it.

    1. There is no on-off switch; that's basic. I want to turn the effing system off. There is no simple, obvious way to do that. I want to turn the effing fan off. There is no simple, obvious way to do that.
    2. No tech support, except FAQs and the "community." Clearly cheap for apple. Clearly inadequate for a consumer.
    3. Navigating the system is cumbersome, limited, sequential screens.

    Do yourself a favor: Get a Honeywell or some other brand that does not look so cool but that has a good display and can be easily used.

    Great product, but don't upgrade yet, especially if you live in the South

    Have had my nest almost a year. Installed it the end of last summer. Love all its features except 2:

    The first is the way it plugs into the wall. It is very easy for family members to knock it off the wall while trying to set it. It is better set from your iPhone. This would not be an issue if people were not playing with it so much do to the main issue in the next paragraph.


    The main issue with the Nest is the lack of ability to control humidity settings. My old thermostat allowed this. I have discovered that living in the South, this is a very important feature for comfort.

    When the nest turns on to cool the house, the humid cold air is annoyingly uncomfortable. Turning up the ambient room temperature to correct this results in a room that feels to warm after the AC stops blowing. So either you feel a little too cool when the AC is blowing, or a little too warm when it's not. This is not extreme, but just enough to be annoying if you spend time in your house. I don't notice it when I return form work and go to bed, but I do notice it on weekends and days off when I spend time in the house this summer.

    I am well past the learning curve for a new device, and have not solved this, but I do see where the Nest measures the humidity. So it should be possible for the company to allow us to control it.

    Since a basic wired thermostat has a humidity control feature, I am surprised that Nest does not. If I was not so lazy, I would re install my old thermostat. If Nest solves this problem, I will upgrade.

    Not worth the money

    First - Nest lacks the most basic of thermostat functions: Hold Temp. Enthusiasts will tell you the Nest features eliminate the need for it, but Friday was a holiday and there was no way to tell the thing not to run the usual weekday program.

    Second - Auto Schedule makes random unexpected changes. The ability to confirm those changes would be great. My thermostat decided that I didn't want the temp to drop to 70 degrees at 10 PM anymore and cleared that part of the program even though if I made that adjustment, I only did it once. So Auto Schedule is off.

    Third - Auto Away overrides the schedule. So rather than having a comfortable temp in the house when I get home from work, like the program is set for, the thermostat goes to Away when I am at work and I have to interact with it to get it to run the program. What is the point of a schedule if the thermostat doesn't follow it? So Auto Away is off.

    The novelty features of Nest don't really work. I'm pretty sure that the thermostat is not smarter than I am, but it thinks it is and does things it thinks I want. I shouldn't have to interact with my thermostat regularly to get it to do what I want it to, but that is what the Nest requires.

    There are less expensive wifi connected thermostats that do what the Nest does. They don't have the fancy metal ring around them, but that is about all you are getting for the extra money. I wouldn't buy another one.

    The NEST Thermostat and NEST Protect.... the truth.



    I have owned both of these item since they came on the market. I thought they would be good to have to protect our home and allow us to communicate with the items and control our home while away. After owning both of these for some time now this is our experience.



    Our home:

    We live in rural Ontario. We have an all electric home with 200 Amp service and a 15KV generator to supply power when the power goes out. Our ISP provided a Siemens Modem and behind it we have an Apple Extreme 801g/n router to provide wifi. We now also have a UPS to handle the wifi until the generator starts during a power failure. Even in a power failure our ISP provides Internet access.





    The NEST Thermostat:

    It was easy to install and worked right out of the box. It is easy to use in person and controls our electric heating just fine. It was only after a power failure we began to see the issues. The NEST does not like to reconnect to our wifi after a power failure. I have always had to wait until I return home, walk to The NEST and select “wifi” and press it. Then it connects. The NEST is only 3 meters from our wifi router and signal strength is reported to be “excellent” at 86% when tested. So signal is not the issue. To get around this I’ve installed a UPS so the wifi never drops. This has solved this issue it would appear at the moment. No battery issues so far. Other issues: It has no idea where we live. I had to trick it during setup as our location is not available. Occasionally it complains about setup issues that when checked don't exist. On occasion it will not light up when approached even though this feature is turned on. I have to poke it to get it to light up. All else appears OK. Do I trust it for an extended vacation in the winter: NOT ON YOUR LIFE.



    The NEST Protect:

    We purchased 2 of these when they hit the market. Installation was easy and they both worked out of the box. The issues with both of these units are the never-ending stream of false alarms, always when we are away. We rush home to find NOTHING.!! Even while writing this our bedroom NEST Protect went off telling us about smoke in the bedroom that isn't there. We’ve received Emails telling us our bedroom is full of smoke. When we arrive home our cat is sleeping on the bed so we can safely assume the alarm in the house did nothing. We’ve had alarms of power outage when there was none. We’ve had alarms of fire when there was none. THEY ARE A PAIN.



    The NEST Support:

    In a word: it’s non-existent. When you refer to the web site there is a “Contact Us” area but it only takes you to another page which lists HELP and The Community. In other words “You bought it and you’re stuck with it and we don’t want to talk to you to help you with your problems”. If you do leave comments in The Community someone will answer but it’s days later.



    I would in no way recommend either of these products to anyone but I did buy them and yes I’m stuck with them. I may end up dumping them on eBay and going back to Honeywell products that actually do work.

    Great in theory- terrible in reality

    If you are soul owners of a home and have no guests- nest rocks. Otherwise think twice. First thing is anyone over the age of 50 or isn't totally mac savy won't know how the heck to operate it and you'll be graced by crazy energy bills because guests self adjust the settings without you knowing- fun times:) That's what it comes down to, if you have guests in your home, and live in your home with a constant stream of friends and family- this system is not realistic and will end up quadrupling your energy bill.

    Great Design, horrible product with major issues

    The Nest has the beauty of Apple design but poor quality product

    The product installs easily and support is good

    After running fine for a couple months I came home to both my furnace and air conditioner running at the same time. This was for three days and house was 90 degrees. The energy costs alone are greater than any potential savings. The danger factor alone for this known problem is high and I can't believe they don't recall the product.

    I received no alerts or anything on the iphone app. It only pretends to be intelligent for minor features. It is has little intelligence for reliably heating and cooling your house which is the main job.

    I went back to a $25 Honeywell thermostat from Home Depot and everything is fine. Nest will replace unit but how could you trust the device.
