    Not as good

    I purchased Nest, after couple month of on and off working out the way it works, it was working fine, until and in a cold night of January, the house was very cold, come to find out that the thermostat is completely dead and without any warning, lucky enough I have kept my old thermostat, I changed the thermostat back to the old one. after checking the Nest thermostat, the battery was completely drained, and needed to be charged.
    if it works like it should, its a good thermostat, but when the problem is in the source of this thermostat, lots of glitches needed to be workout.
    I don't advice anyone to purchase this thermostat, and if you do, keep your old one handy because you going to need it.

    breaks easily

    bought the nest at Christmas in three months it broke

    the technician nest recommended me to use in my area told me he's seen a lot of them break

    do not buy this product
    wish apple did not carry it because I thought apple would have not carried it if it was not reliable
    now I have my old thermostat and everything works well now

    try Honeywell

    if anyone from nest reads this build a more reliable product before releasing

    Wish It Was 5 Stars But It's Only 1 Star

    I was so excited to order this product when the gen 2 first came out - the concept is great and the user interface is wonderful. Unfortunately the build quality Is so poor that everything else doesn't matter.
    When my heating / cooling contractor installed it for me (I have a ground source heat pump so Nest recommended a pro install) a year and a half ago - it was his first experience with it and he was impressed but not as quick to convert as I had been.
    Just to be sure everything was good - my contractor talked to the Nest support group when first connecting and everything went well.
    Suddenly 6 months later in the middle of the winter - the thermostat started sending a cooling request at the same time as a heating request to my heat pump which left me with only air conditioning on a very cold day. Even after changing the mode to heating only it continued to send cooling requests.
    My contractor came out and after conferring with Nest support for about an hour, they finally agreed it was a defect and arranged to send me a new one.
    In the meantime my contractor disconnected the cooling wires at the heat pump so that the thermostat couldn't try to cool the house (it was -10C outside).
    When the new one arrived a week later - I hooked it up, had my contractor come back to reconnect the cooling at the furnace and we were OK again.
    I thought this was a fluke and went back to singing the praises of the Nest Thermostat to my friends.
    Now it's the middle of the winter again and suddenly my furnace is making a terrible sound and my house is freezing.
    Contractor is back and the replacement thermostat has begun sending simultaneous heating and cooling request (actually only a 15v cooling request but a 24v heating request).
    This time the defective (again) thermostat damages my reversing valve.
    With all the visits and now repair charges - my contractor has cost 3 - 4 times the value of the thermostat and he has now had enough experience with them to tell me this is not a fluke. The electrical circuits are cheap and these problems are cropping up fairly regularly.
    Enough!
    There are other alternatives now and I can't afford the cost or headache of sticking with this Nest thermostat.

    Disaster, waste of money and time with totally useless tech support

    We bought one and got it to work to run the heating, but couldnt connect to internet. Then as suggested by Nest, we reset, restarted the device and since then it didnt detect the heating. After wasting 2 hours on the phone with tech support, they couldnt solve the problem. We said FINE, we sent the wiring and the picture to Nest compatibility email to get their advice. After a few days we got an email saying it wouldnt work cause we have high voltage which is absolutely wrong. Not sure how to trust such tech support who cannot even diagnose high voltage from low voltage, let alone to help with the rest. I strongly not recommend this product as it is over priced and not working. it just looks fancy and the idea of how it supposed to work is enticing, the reality is it's not working. period!!!

    Stopped working in the middle of a cold night!

    Suddenly stopped working in the middle of the night! Woke up to a freezing downstairs and no response from the thermostat. Looks like my 7 month old baby will be sleeping in the cold again tonight. Total rip off!

    NEST LEARNING THERMOSTAT DOES NOT WORK!

    I am an architect and we were pretty excited by using this thermostat in several of our projects. One third of them couldn't even connect to the equipment they were suppossed to regulate even though they were compatible as per Nest's list of compatibility. And the other third would work OK for one week and then die.
    We tried working something out with Nest.com directly but they do not have real Customer Service. If you call, they'll have you waiting for one hour and then the call will magically fall and they will never follow up nor answer your emails. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. IT'S A NICE CONCEPT, BUT IT DOESNT WORK YET!!! SO FRUSTRATED BY THE LACK OF RESPONSE OF THIS COMPANY. NEVER AGAIN!

    Does not work with Carrier

    I purchased a Nest for my wife for Christmas. Before opening the box, I watched the nest online installation video and went to the nest compatibility website. The website instructed me to take a photo of my existing wiring and send it to nest customer support. I called nest and spoke to a tech after a very short wait. He advised me that my nest "may not be compatible" but had me continue to investigate. After an 18 minute call, he determined that i should go ahead and instal my nest. After installation, my nest said a wire was not installed correctly. I went through troubleshooting and called the support telephone line again. This time they said "because of the proprietary wiring (in the photo i had previously sent) your nest is not compatible." I then went to google and immediately found an article on nest.com that explains Carrier Infinity systems are not compatible. I don't know why the box doesn't say "not compatible with Carrier Infinity Systems" and I don't know why the first phone technician didn't say "not compatible with carrier infinity system."

    Don't buy a Nest Thermostat - Low Battery = no wifi

    The Nest Thermostat simply does not work. I have owned and returned 5 Nest thermostats. They look great until low battery notification appears and then no wifi connection. So really no Nest remote functionality. It may look better but internally it is a poor design and doesn't work. I replaced 2 Nest Thermostats, and in less than a month both had low battery problems. Just to be clear, you can not access or change the battery on the Nest thermostat. I am going to try the Honeywell. Have a good day.

    Was good until version 4.0 software ... now leaves house without heat

    Loved my Nest thermostats so much I bought 5 more for friends/family. Since the software updated to 4.00 in mid Dec (who releases a major software update during the coldest winter in decades), the Nests have been failing with dead batteries, including those with c-wire connections (full voltage so battery isn't required). Apparently 4.01 isn't helping any and Nest isn't globally releasing it, you have to beg and plead to get it.

    Avoid these until Nest figures out their software issues ... I've taken the Nest Protect alarms off my want-list.

    These things are horrible. I have spent hundreds of dollars on HVAC repairs that always end up being the mystery "low battery" phenomenon. I am about to remove all 6 units and replace with Honeywell stats. Oh, they are very pretty but that is all they are.

    Too much trouble - energy cost increased.

    First off, I'm very tech savvy, over 20 years in electronics design and software engineering, so I'm capable of following basic installation instructions. I was quite interested in the Nest thermostat. My house is heated and cooled by a newer heat pump. I dutifully took a digital photo of the connections to my old thermostat and sent them to Nest. When i called, I was assured that the 2nd generation thermostat would work fine with my system. Nest even sent me an email with wiring instructions. This would be a snap, I thought.

    All seemed fine at first. Then, during a twice-yearly HVAC service, the tech asked me why I had the emergency heat on all the time the unit was running. I was puzzled. He showed me that it was indeed running on emergency heat. After a couple of calls to Nest tech support, I gave up, reinstalled the original thermostat, and returned the Nest for a refund. Then - insult to injury - I received an electric bill that was nearly 3x normal - emergency heat is expensive! I could have bought 2 more Nests with the additional energy cost. By the way I checked, double checked, and confirmed with Nest support that everything was wired and configured correctly.

    Not a happy outcome.

    FAIL

    Don't be fooled by the shiny, sleek look. This this is an epic fail that can cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars if you live in a cold climate. This is an expensive consumer electronic device and NOT an HVAC device. The customer support is non existent apple-like "geniuses" who are totally untrained for the problems this thing generates
    I had constant stop WiFi connectivity issues and several losses of power to the furnace and AC and low battery warnings.
    I lost count of how many times I came home to a boiling or freezing house
    One day, It failed on a nasty cold snap and my water pipes froze, my basement flooded with cold frozen water and destroyed my finished basement and everything in it.
    The HVAC guy said it was the nest. He refuses to sell them because of the constant problems that can easily become catastrophic.
    Don't be an idiot like me. READ THE REVIEWS and stay away!!

    Buy a cheap honeywell or something that is designed as a real thermostat. The aren't shiny, but they work. This POS does NOT!

    Nice Idea but Bad Product

    Same as the previous review I woke up one morning during the recent cold snap to the downstairs (where the Nest T-stat was located) being in the 40's and found that the Nest thermostat had stopped communicating with my furnace. To be clear both other zones in my house were working so it was clearly a problem with the Nest. After disconnecting it and rechecking the wiring (which was fine) the unit was reinstalled and it worked again. Two nights later the same thing happened again. After a quick internet search I found that this a problem with the Nest on some types of HVAC systems. Once I installed the old (non-Nest) thermostat everything worked as it should. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this product.

    Nest is Junk

    Woke up one morning freezing and found that the Nest "learning" thermostat had stopped communicating with my furnace. Tried to turn the heat up and received a low battery message. Called support and they assured me that after charging the thing with a phone charger that it would work again. Temps went to -15 in MN and I woke to a temp of 49 degrees inside my house. Called customer service again and spent over an hour trying to correct issue until they decided it was time to send me a warranty replacement. It took over 3 days for this to arrive and the customer service rep told me that I should go to the hardware store and purchase a traditional thermostat if I hadn't saved my old one to keep my pipes from freezing in my home! Warranty replacement still does not work, I've spent way more on electric bills to run space heaters while the furnace was out, missed a day of work to install emergency thermostat so my pipes wouldn't freeze, I have an 11 year old son who couldn't sleep on a school night because it was bitterly cold in our house, spent hours on the phone with nest "technicians" . Do yourself a favor and buy a normal thermostat, I wish I would have.

    Does not work in cold weather

    I have had HVAC technician talk twice with NEST to get it to operate correctly. In single digit weather the system would only blow cold air. Change system back to Honeywell thermostat and house is warm. Also, does not work with changeable fan speed system. I gave it a year to learn but to no avail.

    Does not work!

    After purchasing the Nest thermostat at my local Apple store (along with $2,500 worth of computers), I installed the Nest in my vacation condo so I could turn up the heat before arriving after a prolonged absence. Three days after I left, the wifi quit. On returning to my cold condo, I installed a new router. A few days later over the holidays, the Nest wifi controll quit with a "low battery" warning. (The router is not the problem.) With sub-zero temps outside, the Nest defaults to a dumb thermostat...a very expensive dumb thermostat. At -8 degrees F, can it be trusted to keep the pipes from freezing? Bottom line: easy to install, very pretty, doesn't work. (Apple: warn your customers!)

    Update killed thermostat.

    Newest update causes the battery to run down and shut down. In the cold north east no thermostat is a big concern, but not to Nest. With no battery you can not even manually turn on your heat!!!! Frozen pipes while you are on vaca? Elderly in the house? They claim to have a fix but upon calling they admitted they can't even roll back to a working version.

    Do not buy a Nest

    The Nest is not reliable. We installed ours 2 wks ago and it does not work - we are presently freezing in our home. Yesterday, we came home from work as usual and it was mysteriously in "away" mode. Today, we came home and it had the air conditioner and furnace running at same time. The house was freezing. We turned off the air conditioner at the electrical panel - we tried to do it at the Nest but it did not work, so the only option was to flip the breaker. We then put a thermometer beside the Nest and saw that it reads 8 degrees less than is displayed on the Nest, meaning that the Nest does not properly measure the ambient temp. We went to their website for troubleshooting - it is a useless piece of fluff. We called their 1-800 # and did not get service after almost an hour on hold. So, here we sit, freezing and disappointed, in our house in November! We will return to Honeywell asap. Do not get a Nest!

    Stopped working

    I bought the Nest about 6 months ago and had it professionally installed along with a brand new HVAC system. It worked fine until about a week ago went it got cold outside. The Nest had both the heat and the AC running at the same time. I had to go out and pull the breaker to the AC unit. I had the HVAC company come out today and take a look at it. The confirmed that the nest was sending the signal to the AC unit to turn on. They could not do anything about besides leave the breaker pulled. The other option is to remove the nest and replace with another controller (not a nest). I will now try calling Nest to see what they will do. I am clearly experiencing what is happening to a lot of people. Will be interesting to see how Nest handles it. Makes me mad because I really like the way the nest looked and functioned but clearly this is a huge problem that will most likely have me throwing the nest in the trash.

    Issues with backplates can show up any time

    I purchased my second generation Nest in November 2012. I enjoyed 10 months of efficient use and loved the product, until one night in August while running in cooling mode, it started making a simultaneous call for heat and caused my HVAC system to go completely haywire. Emergency HVAC calls and $700 later it was determined it was determined the Nest had gone bad. At that point Nest didn't tell me about the significant number of issues with backplates that had been cropping up -- I got a replacement that also failed. This time it started running my air conditioning in heating mode when it was 30 degrees out. My third backplate also went bad. The problem seems to stem from Nest's use of FETs which makes it highly intolerant of normal voltage swings found in HVAC units. The nightmare of trying to get Nest to refund my purchase for this sudden incompatibility has been painful -- more than 4 hours of waiting with tech support. The Nest is a great idea, but the company is showing real issues with product quality, reliability and support that needs to be addressed.
