    Do NOT buy this drive!

    • Written by from Simi Valley

I made the mistake of buying a G-drive; kept it in the best of conditions, and used it as my backup drive. One day it suddenly FAILED for no apparent reason. I of course contacted G-Technologies and found out that G-Technologies WOULD NOT honor their own warranty. Not only did I lose all my data -- I also have a $200 paperweight to remind me of what a rip-off product this G-drive is. Tip: If you care about safeguarding your data -- DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE!!

Good Built but too noisy and glowing led

    • Written by from Kritzendorf

Good built quality, but too bulky for today's standards. It is fast when used as Firewire 800. So far works reliably. However it is too noisy and the front led is more of a flashlight than an indicator, quite disturbing, as it is placed beside my iMac !

    Love This Drive

I've had this drive for over a year, and use it daily. I've never had a problem with it, or my 2 G-Drive Mini's

    Well made product

    • Written by from Wilmot

I own 6 of these drives which have been in service for several years and have never had a problem with them. These drives supply backup for Time Machine and they have been flawless.

It is always possible that any drive may fail. If it is in the warranty period I would not understand why the company would not honor that. There are always risks associated with using only one backup drive that is why RAID drives are coming out, real critical data should be backed up in 2 places and possibly one off site,

They are simple to install and come complete with all the wiring needed.

I have a minor wish in that I'd like to see them have - a feature that would turn them off or sleep them when the MAC was in sleep mode or offline.

I think these drives are sturdy and reliable and if the low noise is problematic look into a large cap flash drive.

    Loud but Fast

    • Written by from Baltimore

Just picked up this drive at my local Apple store. The front LED is very, very bright (I have it facing away from me however, so not such a big deal) and the drive is pretty loud, but it is very peppy, and made for a solid replacement for my WD MyBook drive which had worn out after very few years of service. I used Carbon Copy Cloner to move my MyBook drive to my G-Drive, and it worked like a charm. Looking forward to putting this drive through it's paces. I'm using it as an external startup drive, and it will migrate over to my new computer when I replace my iMac in February.

    Excellent speeds, Noise level unacceptable

    • Written by from Gatineau

I purchased this drive along with a 27" iMac to use for a recording studio. The noise level is anything but "Quiet" as the description says.

It is really too noisy to be used in an audio facility. Sad because the performance is top grade, so is the look next to the iMac.

I will be returning it as it is unfortunately useless to me. Apple should realy change the product description or at least provide noise level information.

    died after 2 years

    • Written by from Oakland

I bought the 2 TB hard drive 2 years ago. I didn't take it out out the box until a year later because I was organizing files and folders and finally ready to swap out the 1 TB G-Drive with the 2 TB G-Drive. I started using Time Machine with the new 2 TB hard drive. A year later it started making a clicking sound and then died, unable to get it to connect in Finder window. Thats it. It was over. My warranty had expired and a data recovery service estimated $500-1500 to rescue data. All my photos, movies gone. Just like that. The 2 TB was really only working for 1 year before it quit. Using G-Drives is a total crapshoot. Just know that unless you have 2 backup systems or a back up to the backup, it will fail any given day. Whats the point. G-Technology failed me completely.

As Bad as Some Have Said

    • Written by from Bothell

I bought this drive because I did not have a lot of options given the age of my computer and the need for a Firewire 400 connection. This drive was noisy, which I could live with, but it just broke after 4 months of light use. I started getting "I/O Error" messages, and the Time Capsule could no longer write to the drive. I was unable to repair the errors with Disk Utility, so back to the manufacturer it goes. Be aware that the manufacturer is very, VERY specific packaging guidelines for returning their garbage back to them. I'll never buy anything else from this company.

I have this little gem, only thing I find annoying, is the bright white light thats on all the time, I cut a small piece of foiled back self stick what they wrap on furnace joints , I cut to fit on the light as a defuser works great and still shines around back light, the drive is not all that noisy I find it works great on my new I Mac, better than the WD i used to have connects to apple products by plugging it in, I like it, and recommend

    Good while it last!

    • Written by from Lake Orion

I bought this drive in June 2013 after losing my main computer drive. Today I had a message that Mac OX could not repair disk. I tried to get it to re-connect, but to no use. Now I need to look for a new one before anything happens to my main HD in the computer.

I only give it 2 stars because it was always having issues backing up coming out of sleep. I would have to restart the computer to correct it. It was also bulky and loud like others commented.

I've had this drive for almost three years and work it like crazy without a hitch. Because the the drives are Hitachi drives, one will know it can be guaranteed for a long life span. I've had a previous Hitachi 2.5 drive and it's been thru a lot from leaving it in a very hot location to a very cold location it still keeps ticking and that drive is on it's 10th year of ticking. This drive is amazing I would recommend.
