    Not durable

    • Written by from ReDondo beach

I have had a speck case on my macbook air for 5 years with zero incident. My macbook pro 15 inch retina? has gone through THREE of these in a year. The bottom tabs holding the case on inevitably snap off - and not from abuse either. It may just be this model, but buyer beware, it will happen. I keep purchasing them because i'm an attorney and like the black matte case so my computer blends in in this PC world...

If i had another option, i would take it.

    Looks great, but it's brittle

    • Written by from San Rafael

Works fantastic, your computer does not slip from your hands, it is also really protective. If it only did not break, it clearly is the wrong material choice for the shell.

Maybe Speck can take the hint and choose another plastic, it would be a great product. Funny no one out there has taken their design and run with it.

I've had the same issue as many reviewers here, after 12 months the corner tabs on the bottom shell broke off, almost dropped my MBP!

Like the other reviews have noted, the back tabs on the bottom piece of the case have broken on my case as well.

    Horrible Case!!

    • Written by from Ponte Vedra Beach

I bought several clear Spec cases for my business less than a year ago. On two of them, the corner clasps have broken off (on TWO). Also, 3/4 plastic stoppers on the bottom fell off. But the worst part is, on one of them with the two clasps broken off, when I picked it up, my $3000 new Mac laptop slid out and crashed on the floor. I had to spend $1200 in repairs at the Apple store. The exact same thing happened to the other laptop, but luckily was caught. I am extremely disappointed with this product. It has cost me a fortune. DO NOT BUY!!!

I purchased this from the apple store and I'm extremely disappointed. In the first month it started to fall apart on me. If i had my receipt i would have returned it or sent it into SPECK since its under warranty. I will never purchase this brand again.

Speck 15" SmartShell Satin Case for MacBook Pro with Retina display

    • Written by from Stratford

I purchased my first MacBook Pro in June of 2014, being the OCD person I am i immediately wanted to protect my new investment. So, I purchased the Speck 15" SmartShell case. I must say at five months in the case has performed it's job 10 times over. I read some of the other reviews and have not experienced any of the issues/flaws that other buyers have. Maybe Speck has upgraded the material used to construct the shell. It has saved my MacBook Pro on several occasions including a good scratching from the cat. Yes, i will say the shell did not hold up against the cat's rear claws, the top is scratched, but I will say that those same scratches are NOT on my MacBook.

Bottom rear tabs break quickly and easily.

    • Written by from Provo

In making the case thinner, they weakened the rear clips. Both clips broke through normal use, just putting my laptop into my messenger bag on a desk or other hard surface. I wasn't rough on my laptop or case, this is a normal situation a laptop case should be able to handle.

Broken after 3mo very gentle use

    • Written by from Newmarket

My only previous disappointment with this case was that its matte finish shows EVERY fingerprint smudge and small scratch - even fingernails scratch it easily. A 15-second buff with a cloth would have it looking good again - even the small scratches disappeared - but it was something I had to do every couple of days. Nevertheless I was pretty happy with it - it fit well and seemed to offer good protection.

It has survived just three months in VERY gentle use. My Macbook gets gently hand-carried from table to table in our home offices - and not much - and only rarely leaves the house in a well-padded Targus bag, not recently. Yesterday as I was putting it down the bottom slid forward a couple of inches, I nearly lost my grip on the computer! As others have reported, two small tabs at the rear corners that are critical to attaching the bottom half of the case have broken. I have *NO* idea how this could have happened... I'm stunned that it has! Only in a museum display could it have a gentler life than it has here. Incredible!! I don't know what's going to replace it, but it won't be another Speck product.

    Not a Good Choice

    • Written by from Cornelius

As many have said, this Speck product is a major disappointment. I have always had good experiences with Speck products until I got this. First one lasted about 3 months. Now my second one didn't do much better. The bottom tabs have broken off and the top cover has chipped off in one corner. The material just seems to be too brittle to last. I am very careful with my stuff, and despite this I am now looking for an alternative cover. Hopefully Speck will come up with a more durable material.

    Latches Easily Break

    • Written by from Austin

The back two latches (one on either side) will snap off under normal use because there's not enough surface area. The plastic bits need to be small because the lid is in the way and the other direction there's the power plug and on the other side a USB port. So they don't really have much of a choice...Other than perhaps to use a stronger material to clasp on. Different design? Who knows...What I do know is that you will have this case for less than 3 months before your computer can just slide right out as you type (pushing forward on the laptop will slide it right out of the bottom case tray without those rear clasps).

Probably the worst piece of computer equipment I've ever purchased. Typically my dollar lasts longer with electronics and computers.

This isn't a "maybe" thing if you're careful. All I do is put the laptop in a padded bag to go to work each day...I lay this bag on my car seat. A co-worker has one rear clasp left. So it happens to everyone. If you never move your computer off your desk, you won't have any problems - but you also won't need the case.

    Brittle

Bottom right back corner of the case cracked (fell) off within a month. My MacBook sits in one place on my desk with the only movement is limited to opening and closing the computer screen. Very low quality.

    Broken tabs and chips...just awful.

    • Written by from Dollard-des-Ormeaux

I have had this case for over a year and use it for occasional travel. Over time it seems as if the case dries out and becomes brittle. All the corners are broken and now the edges of the lid are chipping away.

I have had a bad experience with speck case products across all apple devices. I would never buy their product again.

    Not worth $50

    • Written by from Kalispell

I have used Speck cases for some time now and have been generally happy with them. This one on the other hand has some serious design issues. Mine and my brother's both have the tabs broken off and my brother bought another one just to have those snapped off as well. I am looking into buying another case to protect my MacBook Pro but I'm not wasting $50 for another case to last a month at most. Don't waste your money on this, $50 should buy a more solid case that should last at least 6 months.

Garbage: Scratches easily and tabs break. EXTREMELY overpriced

    • Written by from Boulder

I could hardly get this case out of the box before noticing scratches. This is my second case, because the first one literally came out of the box with scratches. Not one month after owning it, the tabs on the back side of the bottom case broke off. This case is garbage. I will be returning it for a full refund and making as big of a stink as possible.
