    Great sound but unstable connection

    I have had this classy airplay speaker in my bedroom since Summer 2014. The sound is really great. Great midtone and treble with loads of detail and clarity, and the bass really digs deep. Actually the bass is a bit to much even though I prefer the warm Bowers & Wilkins sound. I recommend stuffing a foam plug in the opening on the back which keeps the bass balanced.
    When set up correctly the speaker is supposed to show up on your Airplay list in the bottom of your iDevice's display. Most of the time my speaker does not - and yes, I have set the speaker up correctly following the instructions in the control app quite a few times. Usually I have to use the B&W control app before the speaker shows up on my Airplay list, and I have to make some attempts to connect before I succeed. I have an Apple TV and a Sonos Play1 speaker (without a Sonos bridge) on the same network. The Apple TV is always on my Airplay list on my iDevices, and the Sonos speaker plays immediately when prompted from the Sonos app. So it seems to be a B&W issue. And it simply is not good enough for a product at this price.
    One more thing to point out is how the speaker spreads the sound. It does not. There is practically no sound dispersion. Not a big issue for me but the sound really seems to come from a single spot in the room.

    No regrets ...

    It's worth mentioning that the A7 does require a solid wireless network to function as it should.

    I'm running BT Infinity at a stable +60Mbps through an AirPort Time Capsule base station. I run iMac, iPad, iPhone and Apple TV over AirPlay and don't experience any problems. I also utilise the A7 as a sound bar for the occasional film, which works a treat and a very immersive experience at that.

    I purchased through John Lewis so still fifteen months of guarantee to go.

    My wife also loves the A7 and if she's happy then I'm happy. She's big on full screen YouTube music videos on 27" iMac or the TV with the A7 output. The whole sync works perfectly.

    802.11n incompatible!

    About to throw this fabulous speaker in the bin. Had returned it to have it serviced because it refused to be set up wirelessly, even back at the shop by the shop technician. It had stumped three people trying to get it to operate wirelessly. One a young tech geek from an electronics store, the Hi Fi tech that sold it to me and myself with 20+ years mac history.

    So it turns out it's WiFi isn't compatible with 802.11n. Yes, the flagship mac WiFi thats three times as fast and double the range of the next one down that it is compatible with - g. Its not in the manual mind you. Its buried on one of their customer help pages.

    So I have connected it to the second Wifi signal I happen to have coming out of the ADSL router which is 802.11g. Set up ran smoothly. Playback seems clear and uninterrupted so far. Finally enjoying after a year.


    Amazing sound, disappointing on fast mac networks, saved from the bin.

    Terrible Product

    Beautiful sound for the 1 in a 100 times it actually plays. Speaker resets itself after every use, won't stay connected to the network, drops signal even when located next to the router. Worst money I have ever spent.

    poor wifi connectivity

    The setting app is poor, stocked during the process. Even though the setting succeeds, the iOS cannot always detect the device. Even the device is detected, the signal drop out time to time. Compare to the price, the quality of the airplay is horrible.

    Premium Quality - But the reality is, it isn't

    For about one year the device (rather the connection over AirPlay) worked just fine. But since a few weeks, it is just a bad experience. It makes me angry every time I try to enjoy music: the connection breaks down all the time.... Horrible!!!!

    connectivity FIX

    Try to setup your A7 with the ethernet cable connected to your pc

    Go to your router settings and set up your wifi signal as b/g/n
    the system does not work with the new n wifi system.

    now everything should work !!!

    Had this unit for one year and it will not stay connected to the wifi. You have to reset the system every few days. Called customer service and they just tell you to check your router settings.

    Sound drops 9 out of 10

    The sound of A7 is great for it size no doubt it may be the best small box "sound-wise" out there but.... the AirPlay is a total nightmare, I am not the only one experiencing all sort of issues, read other reviews and you see they are plagued with similar comments.

    B&W I paid a premium for this product and I am greatly disappointed with the AirPlay quality, it always drop in the middle of a song... It is your fault or is it Apple? Please release a firmware to solve this issue ASAP!!!

    The sound is superb, the Airplay is a deal-breaker

    I bought the A7 earlier this spring 2014. It's worked fine for months, until now. My devices that are on iOS 8.1.1 can no longer see the A7 in the Airplay list. I tested an iPhone on iOS 8.0 that could see the A7 for about 15 minutes until it lost connections again. It needs to be restarted every 15-20 minutes now.

    I'm running the latest Airport Extreme that sits maybe 12 ft away from the A7. Every other devices on my network has excellent connection...except the A7.

    If B&W doesn't offer a solution soon, this beautiful piece of audio equipment is getting returned. Seriously disappointed in this TOP dollar devices that has worse network connection than a $50 iHome speaker.

    Serious Connectivity Issues

    The connectivity over wifi is a real problem; works approximately 60% of the time. I love this sound quality, but have just about had it with the thing. It's going back tomorrow.

    Nightmare speaker

    This speaker was never easy to use with my WIFI, always dropping the signal. Now after one year the red lights flashes continuosly and the speaker no longer works. For such premium price i expected a lot lot better. Will avoid this brand in the future.

    If only I'd read the reviews before I spent £700+ on the A7. I so much wanted it to work. It sounds great... yes we all know that, but it just fails to stay connected. 2 years or so I've had it now. It works wonderfully for a week or two then... gone. drops off the network, won't reset, nothing to do.. then miraculously there it is again. talk about frustration!!! Every Time I got the box out to return it it started working again... I know.. that sounds stupid. Please Mr B+W do something to stop us regretting our major cash outlays or take this product off the market.

    sound is amazing, connectivity is inexcusable

    I'm joining the chorus here. Gorgeous sound until it drops out and the speaker needs a hard reset.

    The speaker is not far from the AirPort, nor are the MacBook and iPhone I've used to play music. I've never had problems with any other wifi or AirPlay devices but this one just won't work consistently. The longest I've gone before a total ker-splat is maybe four songs.

    Help! Isn't there some kind of firmware update that can solve this? I'm obviously not the only one having this problem.

    Great sound when it works

    Constant source of frustration. I have spent hours and hours trying to get this speaker to work consistently but it continues to drop signals and require hard resets. I have tries everything, complete waste of money

    impossible to connect

    I just bought this today so take my reivew with the appropriate grains of salt. I have connected and reconnected this thing to airplay over and over again for about 3 hours. the one time it stayed connected, I heard the best portable speaker ever. sounds great, I just can't get it to stay connected, and I have perfectly fine internet that gets up to 30mb.

    I haven't given up on it yet, but I am understanding these other reviews...

    Great big sound and sophisticated looks

    After buying this 2 years ago I haven't a bad word to say about the, albeit, expensive, but worth it, A7 speaker. While I bought it to augment my "main stereo", *it* soon became "my main" stereo because it sounds better than my Onkyo (which I love BTW) and I've never had an issue streaming to it. Also, everyone who hears it loves it, without any prompting from me. If you have the money, you couldn't do better than the A7.

    Your connection will be dropped. No matter what you do.

    No doubt about the exceptional sound quality of this speaker.
    High frequencies are crispy and bass is impecable.

    But, it's very frustrating listen to a song and get your connection dropped.
    Often the led goes blinking purple and we need to re-setup the Wi-fi, or, wait a long time until it works again.

    I work with IT and I didn't give up right of the bat. I troubleshooted it with all my heart to make worth my 800 bucks. Connected it to the wired network, cleaned up my iPhone, closed all applications, updated to the latest and greatest, even upgraded my Wifi to Airport Extreme, but even the six antennas in it didn't do the trick.

    It's a beautiful speaker, as long as you're wired.

    I'll give it two stars, for all the annoyance it caused me.

    The best letdown by AirPlay

    The Bowers and Wilkins A7 is without doubt a 5 star product unsurpassed in terms of sound refinement and quality but its one great achilles heal is its reliance on AirPlay. Whether you choose wireless or ethernet connection makes no difference you will suffer the occasional dropout to a greater or lesser degree while ever AirPlay acts as the control. You may be able to live with that but I cannot. Apple's AirPlay is robust when coupled to its own AppleTV but it is anything but rock solid with the A7. The only guarantee that no dropout will ever occur would be to connect your Apple device with a Lightning to USB converter then USB to the A7 making a direct non wireless link - but that rather defeats the object of a wireless device. For those doubters out there having read all the reviews (like me) my wifi signal is very good and suffers no dropouts at all in any other situation, so after various patient scenarios in trying to get AirPlay to play ball without issues (dlan adaptor, even a new router) I reluctantly had to return the A7 even though it wasn't faulty. A shame. Maybe B&W are working on an alternative approach to reliable hq streaming without using AirPlay - I hope they are.
