Will the EarPods work with other smartphones and audio devices?

The new EarPods look like incredible headphones and I'm wondering if I can use them with my Android device since I'm not an iPhone user. I understand the remote and volume control are software based and thus not supported, but what about the audio enhancements.

  • The volume buttons do not work. However, you may pause/play with a single middle click, go to your next track with two, and previous with 3. On KitKat (as far as I know) you can hold on the button and Google Now will come up.

  • we have 3 pairs and they do NOT work with my Samsung S3 or my work Nokia Lumia 710, they do work on my daughters iPhone 5c and my wife's iPhone 5S. All i get when i make calls on my Samsung or windows phone is a high pitch noise on the other end and the person cant hear me at all.
I dont understand this since it should be a standard 3.5 jack and my samsung ear buds work in the iPhone, tested this with all 3 sets of the ear Apple Earpods and get the same results.

  • Almost everyone is wrong. These earpods are not just headset. Apple uses technology which doesn't work on all devices, but probably on most it does. E. x. It works on Galaxy Ace with Ginger Bread, but don't work on Sony Ericsson WT19i with ICS and my old TV. I don't know if it is because of operating system version or hardware (WT19i is better in performance than Galaxy Ace)

  • Yes. They will as they are a simple 3.5mm Jack.

  • Yes, the audio will work with your Android device. The remote and volume buttons may actually do something with your Android. It's very simple and similar hardware to their control headphones.

  • Earpods work best on my Samsung C3520. A cheap handset, still put it on the Bass mode and listen to the awesome audio.

  • Pretty much all Mac products will work with the earpods.
Now depending on your phones apart such as Galaxy or Droids, Mot. the functions will vary.
For me I have a Droid Charge and the volume control does not work with this phone.
Placing a call also will not allow you to have conversations with the mic or control volume.
You can hear the person but they can't hear you.

Now when I plugged into my ipad I made a facetime call and worked flawless. itunes also worked and the controls worked. Volume up and down.

So in conclusions, as part of Apples way of keeping it within the family they made this possible to work only with their products. Any other devices will vary like I said and may or may not work.

Over all for music and listening enjoyment, great quality and pleased. I also like the new ear design but still have a issue keeping them in when walking. (Course once again everyone's ears are shaped differently!)

  • These headphones aren't doing anything special with the software, aside from the buttons, so you should be able to get all the new audio features the headphones have with any audio device.

  • They would work with any media player, laptop, tablet and even android phone.. Anything that can connect with it, will work. But as you said, to use the volume control, it just depends on if the music device supports the EarPod software.

As for audio enhancement, i'd say they are similar to Beats Audio earphones, as it doesn't matter what device they connect to they will have the same audio enhancement.

  • I doubt Apple will actually say anything along the lines of, "Yes this compatible with such and such non-Apple device". I have used Apple earbuds with my old Android phone and some parts worked, but others didn't. I believe the play/pause/stop button worked but the volume +/- buttons didn't do anything.

  • The audio enhancements are hardware based and thus will, in fact, sound better than the previous Apple earbuds would have in your non-apple device. They will be compatible with any standard earphone port for audio. The remote feature is Apple device specific.

  • Yes, you be able to use these as regular headphones with other devices, however the mic and controls probably won't work on anything non-Apple.

  • They're going to work with anything that uses a 3.5mm headphone jack, same as the current apple earbuds and any other headphones. Audio quality will be just as good (or at least as good as the phone's audio chip can output).
I'm not 100% sure on the control buttons but there's a chance they might work with android phones too.

  • Well, it depends on the sounds your Android Phone give to the Apple EarPods through the earphone jack. The best now is to pre-order the iPhone 5 - it comes with Apple EarPods, and aslo many great features (it comes bundled with iOS 6).
