I bought this case with my computer and the color and 'sleekness' of it was and still is great (I have the turquoise color). Howe I bought this case with my computer and the color and 'sleekness' of it was and still is great (I have the turquoise color). However, over the ten months that I have had it on, it has gotten damaged. There are many superficial scratches on it and the corners have cracked. One of my bottom corners actually has a small piece missing from it. I am very glad that this has happened to the case and not my computer, I just wish that it would not show as much wear as it has seen. I feel like I might have to buy one every year or so in order to ensure that my computer does not get damaged. Oh, also the bottom piece is loosening. …

Speck SmartShell Review
The product looks good when first purchased. It took a while to put it on without breaking any of the plastic. 10 months later, The product looks good when first purchased. It took a while to put it on without breaking any of the plastic. 10 months later, the bottom is cracked in several places and is pulling off. some plastic "grips" have broken off. There are scratches all over the place, and the cover just does not look very nice any more. It did keep the actual computer from getting damaged, I will give it that. Overall, I will have to look for a new one ...and I was hoping it would last a little longer. …

I like the case it protects my computer, but I really wish that they made them just a little sturdier or more flexible so that they wouldn't snap so easily. …

As soon as my MacBook came out of the box, the case I bought this case in the store when I bought my 15" MacBook Pro in September. As soon as my MacBook came out of the box, the case went on. Last week the back corner of the case broke off, making the entire bottom part too loose to stay on. The case looked scratched within days of putting it on. Mind you my laptop normally stays at home and have never been dropped. I loved the (purple) color, and will probably be buying another one because I would hate to have the MacBook get damaged, but for $50 the case should last longer then 4 months. …

Exactly What I Needed!
I have used Speck SmartShell cases in the past on other computers, and even on tablets. I think out of the options for aftermarket I have used Speck SmartShell cases in the past on other computers, and even on tablets. I think out of the options for aftermarket cases that you are given they seem to be the best. At one point I had received the case from the company with a crack so I called in and asked for a replacement. They went above and beyond this by letting me keep the original and giving me a replacement! Excellent customer service.
Now a lot of people seem to have issues with cracking on the case. I personally have never had this happen on ANY of the cases I have owned from Speck. That is not to say that it can happen if you continuously remove the case, install the case, remove the case, install the case, and so forth. There is honestly no reason to remove the case once you install it. The instructions say to do so every few months, but what's the point? The case makes a complete seal between the actual case and the cover, so dust has absolutely no way to get in between the two. Just put the case on properly and never take it off until you need to either replace the computer, or sell it, and presto you will have a brand new looking computer with no scuffs/marks.
The installation is fairly simple, wipe down your computer to make sure you remove dust/grime, wash the actual Speck Case (per instruction if you want it to be perfect), or simply just wipe it down. Just make sure to use a towel/rag that doesn't leave lint (I have done it before without thinking). This leads me to my only real gripe about the product. They put a clear protector film on the outside of the case to protect from scratches during transits/store shelves, but lack one on the inside. This clear film is taken off, but I think if it was on the inside as well it would remove ALL dust before placing it on the computer. This would be optimal, but in retrospect such a small detail.
The quality is perfect for what you pay for. The case is crystal clear, I purchased the clear option, and grips perfectly to the case so it doesn't come loose. This is why you will read reviews on people having issues getting it off. Once it is on, just leave it on. No reason to take it off at all. The shell fits the contours of the macbook retina perfectly. There is absolutely no unevenness between the actual macbook and the case, it is perfectly aligned. The bottom case piece has rubber grips to help the computer from sliding around, but in my experience they did yellow over time (-1 star). Shouldn't be an issue though as these are unseen on the bottom. Lastly, the top piece includes little rubber grips in each corner to prevent the case from making contact with the macbook. Fantastic idea! The little grips are very small and hardly seen.
Sorry for the long review, just wanted to be sure I hit each point that I thought would help potential customers. Little more in depth in comparison to the 4 other reviewers with shorter reviews. Little more information for you if you will. Hope this helps!
Side Note: If you decide to remove the case just take your time and don't force anything. It will take a little bit of work to get it off, but don't be silly and rip it off. Pop each corner up before completely removing. If you decide to just pull from one corner expect it to crack. …

Great Case, no issues because I maintain it semi-properly
I've had my case for a year now, and my only complaint is that upon looking at it at first, I thought it was black, and not purple I've had my case for a year now, and my only complaint is that upon looking at it at first, I thought it was black, and not purple, but the purple has grown on me and I love it too!
The people who have had issues, and complain are usually people who don't follow the maintenance instructions recommended by the manufacturer, granted I've done it maybe three or four times in the little over a year I've had it, I still love the darn thing, and I have no complaints.
I give it a 4/5 because I don't ever give anything a 100% rating, unless it blows me away, and this has done exactly what I've expected and that suites me fine. …
