Very Good - Shame there's no dual tuner

I honestly cannot fault the product... although I've actually returned it! Explained below...

Mine was connected to the house's digital aerial.

Installation is straight forward, albeit, I had to choose the "advanced" drop down option when scanning for channels, and choose the "exhaustive" option, which found 99 channels, instead of the 7 it found with a standard scan.

The TVTV guide is actually very good.

    Recordings are perfect.

I am using it on my 2010 iMac 27" i7 and on full screen it looks great.

My reason for 4 stars is because its not a dual tuner... by that I mean, if you record a channel with this, you have to watch it too (assuming your wanting to watch TV whilst recording).

I've now ordered the EyeyTV Diversity 2008 model (£89.99 on apple store) which looses the analogue and digital radio features (I didn't need or want them anyway). And in its replace has the dual tuner, meaning I can record one channel and watch another at the same time. An important feature for me.

Bear in mind, especially UK users, the analogue feature is as good as useless this year as we're switching to digital, and the radio surely isn't a key feature when buying this product... so I would recommend the other, cheaper 'diversity' model based on the dual tuner.

    Hope this helps!

After the initial set up for the EyeTV Hybrid, such as finding a suitable place for the antenna the product works well.

The only down side i could find was the remote control not having range when the EyeTV usb is not in sight.

overall a great addition to my laptop.

    Very happy

Bought the ´09 version a month ago and I'm extremely happy with it.

Reception through my old attic antenna produces a super crisp and sharp image with excelent sound reproduction. The tuner and signal is way better than the one in my Sony Bravia so actually started watching TV exclusively through my Mini. This also gives me instant access to record, pause and timeskip features.

Recording, editing, converting and sharing over WiFI is simple and works very well with the apple remote or Rowmote for the iPhone.

Only thing missing is the hardware mp4 encoder if you wan't to transfer VHS, get the eyetv 250 for that.

I have had this for just about ~3 years and it works like a dream. Of course I have the previous version of the same product, without the radio. Good picture quality, excellent recording especially from on air digital programs, if you connect it to a proper outdoor ariel. I no longer use the indoor ariel, but give it a go, it may work in your area. And we use it a lot as it is the only TV recording facility in the house.

Analog grab from VHS, via Scart to composite and audio leads is good but only if you use a good quality cable. Be realistic because it is easy to misinterpret the lower quality of the original VHS as crapy recording by the device, especially after getting used to seeing very good quality TV with the device for a while.

EyeTV software is beyond par. The few hitches which occur very occasionally will, with any software and this is no different but is miles better that any windows TV software that is out there.Simple but reasonably good editing facility to cut out adverts etc. Can split long recordings into smaller bits easily.

EyeTVs built in media-server "eye connect" never worked for me. So I use "MediaLink" by Nullriver (costs $20 for a downloadable copy) to stream EyeTV recordings over WiFi to the PS3 so we can watch it on the living room TV.

I've had this for just about 2 years. It worked fine for quite awhile but about a month ago the EyeTV started giving me problems. The EyeTV keeps giving me errors such as "your device is not plugged in" when it is or my personal favourite "your device is not plugged into a USB 2.0 port" - I own a new iMac which has nothing but 2.0 USB ports!

The remote has also developed problems. I can no longer change channels using the remote. All other functions seem to work fine though.

So in summary it works but not forever! Would I buy again? Hmm not so sure.

I bought a Hybrid just over a year ago and it's superb. I have absolutely no complaints. I use it both in France and the UK without problems. The software is excellent - I'm still using version 2 and haven't felt the need to upgrade.

    Easy TV on your Mac

I've been using the EyeTV Hybrid for a couple of years and after reading some of the other reviews felt that I should make a contribution. The aerial which ships with the product is unlikely to provide much of a signal if you live in an area of poor Freeview reception as I do, so you need to connect it to a rooftop aerial or Sky Digibox. Once tuned, this is an excellent device and easy to use software.
I usually record Premiership football (Match of the Day) through EyeTV and then edit the file to leave the highlights of the games that I'm interested in. These files are then saved and archived as .avi. You can also subscribe to a free-of-charge program listing service so that you can plan to record programs in advance. It's also very easy to save TV shows in iPod format.
On a couple of occasions I had need to contact Elgato support and their service has been excellent. Highly recommended.

I've used this all over the world for a couple of years, very flexible, but a significant proportion of hybrids, including mine, are prone to failure if they get to cold, reporting that the USB is only a 1.1. Elgato don't mention this on their web site but you can find it on their forum. So far application of a little heat seems to be the fix.

I have used it in several European countries... sometimes with digital, if in a big city, and quite often analog when in smaller, always with an external antenna, the hotel one is quite good.

I firmly recomment it as well as the software ... I carry a 40GB disk full of digital TV recordings to see my favorite programs in "analog" cities!

I have this connected to my iMac and can use the external display to watch TV in my office. Simple software to record and then the programmes are exported automatically to iTunes where I can sync them to my iPhone or iPod. Have not had any problems with it connected to my outdoor aerial, but as with most other USB TV tuners it does not work great with the small aerial that is included.

The one star reviews are of a different product

    • Written by

219 of 242 people found this useful

Hmm, the problem here seems to be that the one star reviews are of the previous version of the Hybrid, the one without the FM Tuner. Whether or not they have a point, they aren't about this new version of the hardware. (Apple, is you cut the wrong reviews out, you can cut this paragraph too)

I use the Hybrid (the new one) to record Digital TV, and occasionally radio shows, and have found it to be great. I used it to transfer an old VHS video, just the once. It did a decent job, but comparing it to DTV just shows how bad VHS was.

The EyeTV software is amazing, and works like a dream. I can even (with a little effort) remotely (from my iPhone) tell it to record a show when I'm a little later in the office/pub than I had planned to be.

As I only used the analogue tuner once for the VHS transfer, so I'm thinking I might have been slightly better off with the Diversity, which has two Digital Tuners. But I'm very happy with the quality of the Hybrid, and the radio recording is handy from time to time.

One other thing, I use this with a small indoor antenna and it works well in my area. But areas with weaker Freeview signals may well require an outdoor antenna. A good rule of thumb is, if your main TV needs an outdoor ariel, you will your Mac (that should be obvious right?).

This is my second EyeTV product, I had an older analogue only model a few years ago. I have no hesitation in recommending this, or any Elgato product.

I am a student and stay in university hostel, tried many ways to watch TV here with my MAC and to be honest this is the best solution. It's not only watching the TV but you can Rewind, record, and listen to the radio. I can swear that the signal is better than the TV Line here in my hostel. I don't have to fight with my flat mate if we want to watch two different channel at the same time cause I can let her watch and record my channel at the background.

Finally the design is really outstanding, it looks really great with my MacBook Pro and the supply remote work really well. I am planning to have a Europe tour during my weekend in this coming December and I really believe that I still could to FM radio or either watch some TV at anywhere.

    Worth Money.

Failure to recognise the USB2.0 connection

    • Written by from Loughborough

EyeTV hybrid only works well for the first few minutes when connected to tv set top box. After a while the error message of failure to detect USB2.0 connection will appear. It is very frustrating. I have to restart my iMac in order for it to work well again for the first few minutes after that. I noticed the failure usually occur when the temperature of the system rises. Maybe that has caused the system failed, and less power was directed to the USB2.0, thus less than required for eyeTV hybrid connector to function properly.

The EyeTV hybrid worked ok for about 9 months. Now every time I reboot my mac it stops working for a while. The eyetv software fails to recognize the usb connection. Despite trying all the methods suggested to fix it by eyetv I can't get it to work consistently. Looking at other websites this seems to be a common failure for the hybrid. I wouldn't recommend this product to anybody.
