    Fantastic (with one small exception)

    • Written by from Chippenham

i've used several DVB-T recording devices (a cheap digibox with hdd, a £200 dual tuner humax freeview recorder, a £50 usb tuner and an integrated tuner in my brother's HP vista pc) and this outshines them all. make sure you select dual tuner if you want to watch/record 2 things at once as i set mine wrong to start with.

the exception to the general brilliance of this is the antennas supplied, they are a load of rubbish for use in a building. that said if you are using the eyetv with a laptop on the move they are your only option.

the EyeTV 3 software is great. normally when reading a manufacturers website about their product i normally find they overestimate how good their product is. i dont think Elgato could overestimate if they tried. everything i would want to do the software allows for, and in most cases offers more options than you will ever need. a slight niggle is that when viewing the tv windowed the virtual remote is always on the screen however in full screen mode it fades out after a short delay.

the smart guides are a fantastic idea as they let you create custom searches relating to almost any aspect of the program you may wish to watch, and you can set it to automatically record all the programs it finds that match your criteria, or you can manually select just the ones you want to see.

another great feature is that once recorded your library can be set up for access by anything on your network with a web browser and the recordings streamed to that device. this works especially well with the iPod touch/iPhone as the software is really designed for this purpose.

i'm sure theres much more this product can offer that i haven't mentioned and i'm sure it will be as good if not better than all the features i've described.

if you want to watch TV on your mac i can't recommend this enough.

    Eye TV Diversity

    • Written by from Gloucester

This is a brilliant bit of kit and does just what it says on the box. It can't beat the laws of physics, so don't expect it to pick up every station in any circumstance, no matter what. However it often beats a wired TV in a typical B&B or hotel while I'm on the move, reaching the Freeview channels the main TV can't get or isn't tuned for.

Reception helps if you can use the magnetic base on the antennas to 'glue' them to a radiator, to improve the ground plane (for the nerds).

    I'm well pleased with it.

    Great piece of kit!

    • Written by from Bradford

I don't often leave reviews, but in this case I had to. It is a brilliant piece of kit and works seamlessly and the delivery from Apple was outstanding. They said 5-7 days but I got it less than 24 hours after ordering.

Plugged it in, tuned the channels in and hey presto it worked straight away.

Even just using the two supplied antennae I get a great reception and the eyetv3 software works a dream.

If you want a TV tuner that "just works" get this one, fantastic, also, get it from the Apple Store, I couldn't find it cheaper anywhere.

Having just replaced my Macbook Pro + TV combination with a iMac 27" I was not sure which of the Elgato products to buy. I went for the Diversity in the end.
There have been many complaints about this product and reception. I am using a indoor ariel bought from Dixons and the first time I picked up 89 channels! And the signal strength seems to be full-bar. By the way, I live in Portsmouth. Not totally built up like London, but still urban.
Simply put, if you require Digital TV (and radio) then I would suggest you cannot go wrong with this product.
You may need to download the PDF manual from their websites as the instructions in the box are rubbish!

Great TV on your iPhone or iPod Touch

    • Written by from Telford

I purchased this product to allow me to catch up on my TV viewing when I wanted to without the kids hogging the SKY+ with Tom & Jerry & The Simpsons!!

I have an loft mounted aerial which I plugged straight into the EyeTV Diversity USB Stick with the supplied Diversity connection allowing two channels to be viewed or recorded at once. I have to say within 5 minutes of opening it was up and running and the supplied EyeTV Software installed and configured. Fantasticly easy and great quality picture.

After a few minutes of going through the options I noticed the option to automatically convert all recordings and publish them on an internal website with no configuration to worry about. I altered the settings and clicked the option to convert for iPhone H.264 640x480 and to automatically convert when recorded and publish.

After a few recordings I then when onto both my iPhone and iPod Touch and over the WiFi browsed the advertised URL. Fantastic, I got a website with all of my recordings in a list which when clicked allow me to stream the recording to my iPhone with brilliant quality picture and sound. I then opened up a port on my firewall to direct external traffic to the website and then was able to view the same recordings over 3G on my iPhone from anywhere!!

Lastly, I already own another Elgato product called the Turbo.264 HD encoder which works with the EyeTV Software and decreases the time to convert a recording by approx 40%-50%. Highly recommended.

    Superb reception

    • Written by from Douglas

I was a bit sceptical about how this device would work as we have rather poor reception where we live. In practice the 2 aerials work well together to give what to all intents and purposes are perfect pictures on our iMac. The software works well and recording is easy to set up. The final good bit for us is that conversion to other formats is easy to do so we can time shift programmes to our Apple TV.

This channel is no longer available

    • Written by from South Shields

The software provided looks great but the channel just disappears with the above message Elgatos advice is to restart...this happens in the middle of recording as well as whilst watching. No problems with signal as TV on the same amplifier does not drop out. Shame really as I was very impressed with the software. Email response from tech support was just to tell me to report it to tech support ?

This tiny little Digital TV receiver has transformed my life! The method by which I can find programs and then save those searches as 'smart folders' is so far ahead of what you can do with the larger set-top digital boxes from Sky or Virgin, but the ability to stream those recordings to my iPhone, no matter where I am in the world, from the built-in web server is the icing on the cake!

There's also a simple editor you can use to crop out all the commercials from your recordings. You might want to invest in the turbo.246 dongle if you're going to be doing that a lot, as it speeds encoding by 3 or 4 times.

Slightly fiddly in some respects as when opening a new channel from the guide, it does so in a new window rather than replacing the current window (which is what most people would want), but this can be corrected in the preferences.

Also, you really need to plug this in to your external roof aerial, as the tiny supplied aerials are next to useless unless they have line-of-sight to your nearest transmitter.

Finally, when listening to digital radio, the signal very occasionally 'hiccups'.

But these are tiny distractions... it's really a stunning product.

I recently purchased this device & it has lived up to all the previous 5 stars reviews.
I live in Dublin & I am getting excellent reception, using the supplied antennae, from the trial Irish digital service. This service is using the H.264 codec. The picture quality on my 20ins iMac is superb.

    Doesn't work

    • Written by from London

Claims to pick up reception "deep indoors" and in "poor reception areas". I live in central London, at the top of a building and in a fairly good Freeview reception area. The supplied aerials fail to pick up a single channel. Don't waste your money on this product.

    EyeTV Diversity 2008

    • Written by from Hanwell

I recently bought a TubeStick tuner but sent it back because the software "The Tube" did not match my expectations. TubeStick is cheaper and delivers really great video quality but the software lacks of few important features such as a overlayed program guide which makes it impossible to read it from the couch.

So I replaced it with an EyeTV Diversity.

First notice compare to the TubeStick is I was able to get few more channels (21 on with TubeStick and 29 with EyeTV Diveristy).

Second notice is the video quality EyeTV Diversity is much less than with TubeStick. I was really amazed by the DVD like quality of TubeStick and EyeTV was just like watching VCD lacking of sharpness and having compression artifacts. But it is still decent and unnoticeable if you watch from the couch (at a distance, which is usually how I watch it).

EyeTV Diversity includes two internal TV tuners and you can connect one antenna to each. In the preferences you can set how those two tuners are working together:
    - in Diversity mode, the two tuners are set to the same frequency and a DSP will generate merge the two signal and generate a better signal. For me this is working inconsistently. Some channels were much better some others are just worse.

    - in Dual Tunner mode, the two tuners are independent, which allows you to watch two channels at the same time either as picture in picture or with two separated windows. You can also watch one channel and record another one. In this mode I've noticed that channels that don't work on Diversity Mode have one tunner in 100% quality and the other at 0%. If I move the 2nd tuner's antenna to get 100% quality then the channels works perfectly in Diversity Mode.

    - in Single Antenna mode, as its name indicates, only one tuner/antenna at a time is used. But it seams that the software will use the tuner that have the best signal quality which to my experience works much better than the Diversity Mode. I could set antenna one to get a really good signal for one channel and 0% on the other tunner. But that second tuner delivers 100% quality to other channels. In that setup I have an antenna pointing to one direction to be optimized for some set of channels and the second antenna is pointing to an other direction to be optimized to another set of channels, EyeTV then will pick the best tuner for each channel. I've now managed to get 65 channels (53 free ones)

    Recording with EyeTV 3.
    - one feature missing with EyeTV 3 that I would like to see is the one of The Tube software: as you watch live tv, you could rewind from the beginning and get the software to record from that moment. Sometimes you don't know if a program is good until you watch it and would like to record and watch again later.
    - one hour recording is using 3.3GB of disk space
    - recording quality is as good as what you see live
    - scheduling future recording is just great with a good search feature

The program guide is just cool, especially the overlayed one, it's clear and readable. But I would love to see the software updated with a menu that is a bit like Freeview boxes: program guide on one side, small preview of the channel on the other side and a description of the selected program underneath it.
On the current overlayed program guide, you need to select the program which brings you to another screen where you can decide to view the description, record or watch it now. Would be cool to see the description as you navigate through programs.

The iPhone app is great, you can even watch live TV via 3G (need good signal though). You can view the program guide and add recording schedules. Image is sharp! But the quality is fixed so you need a really good 3G signal unless you buy their Turbo encoder hardware.

    Subtitles are also very readable.

    Fantastic digital tuner

    • Written by from CHELTENHAM

This tuner turns my 24" iMac into a HD TV screen. The picture and sound qualities are perfect. My area is well-known to have poor digital signal. I had to install a new " high-gain digial aerial" on the roof. I am very pleased with this product.

Best TV Tuner available for the Mac

    • Written by from Edinburgh

Arrived within 5 days, even though Apple said it was 1-2 weeks shipping, so was extremely pleased with that! The EyeTV 3 software is just fantastic - being able to automatically record then export to my Apple TV is such a useful feature.

The 'Diversity' feature of the actual tuner is awesome too - record one, watch another etc, has made my day a lot - frequently there is two programs I want to watch, and this is the ideal solution. The picture quality is second to none too. I can't comment on the HD performance, since in the UK, we can only get free HD channels over satellite.

Being able to run EyeTV 3 in full screen and use the Apple Remote, not just the EyeTV supplied one is great too. A really well produced product. Elgato's support for any problems is second to none too - I had a few problems with poor quality exports, and through a series of emails we found the solution. Their forums are a great source of help and information too.

All in all, a great purchase and I'm very happy with it.

Doesn't work basically. Advertised as able to pick up signal indoors and in areas of poor coverage - but doesn't. Might work if connected to a roof/main aerial but that's not the point. Frankly, feel a bit ripped off.

Bought one of these yesterday from my local Apple Store. Thought I was paying more for a superior indoor reception, but turns out that even in the room in the loft with clear view of the sky, two aerials aren't picking up a single channel.

Then swapped for an EyeTV DTT Deluxe, £20 cheaper and much smaller for the laptops especially the MacBook Air. used an extension lead to place the little antenna on the roof. Perfect reception. EyeTV itself is good and the software is state-of-the-art, but JUST DON'T BOTHER WITH THIS PARTICULAR MODEL please! It's £90 and I doubt it makes any noticeable difference to the £50 basic DTT which the only difference with the Deluxe version I swapped for is the size and use of the bigger standard socket.

    EyeTV Diversity an exceptional tuner

    • Written by from NORTHWICH

I agree with what else has been said in other reviews this is an excellent piece of kit. I recently purchased a Mac Mini to use as a media server and the diversity adds to the features of the mini. As said else where Elgato's support is second to none they respond very quickly to any problems you have as I have found in the past with my old Cinergy T2 receiver.

I would recommend this to any one who wants a tuner tv tuner for their Mac. I have not tried the supplied antennas as I purchased it for use on an external one so cannot comment on them.

    Definitely not worth the money

    • Written by from Brighton

A fantastic piece of kit but only if you happen do not have a home. Indoors it simply does not work. I tried on three locations and on all it is the same: 0 channels found! Yet outdoors it picks some 80 channels. I bought this piece of kit to replace an older one I also got from Elgato, the EYE TV200, but the latter with a small indoor antenna picks up to 3 channels. Is Elgato moving backwards?
I know that info on the packet often exaggerates the abilities of the product but maybe they use the same outer packet for the UK and the US, where perhaps signal intensity is stronger. If so they really should have tested this around the UK before launching the product.

    Good, but not very sensitive

    • Written by from Maidenhead

What could be an excellent product has one or two issues. The supplied antennae didn't pick up any channels in my upstairs room. With the main aerial feed which is fine for other DVB-T receivers it couldn't find the multiplex carrying ITV and Channel 4, though it did find 220 other channels!
Changing channels with the remote control in full screen mode sometimes switched the display to thumbnail size.
After using EyeTV I was unable to use PreView to read a PDF document because the menu bar was completely screwed up and I had to reboot (Macbook Pro/10.5.5).
But for watching TV if you've got a good signal it's fine. I haven't tried the recording facilities yet.

This is not my first eyetv product. Hence why I bought again. But this is rubbish. The two arials that come with it are too small. And when plugged in to a house arial I can't watch and record different channels. The remote eats batteries with hours.
    Stay away from this product.
