Not so great as a wireless router!

    • Written by from High Wycombe

I have bought the AirPort Time Capsule 6 months ago and don't get me wrong it's a great solution to back up your mac but it has really weak wifi network. I have tried so many things (changing channels, moving it to another location) but it constantly fails to deliver. It doesn't really matter if it works on 2.4Ghz or 5GHz. Before I was using Sky Router and Talktalk Router and both of them was much more powerful in delivering wireless internet. Sometimes I can't get a wifi while in another room or bedroom. Standing outside just by my lounge windows where AirPort Time Capsule is located and neither iPhone or iPad can't find the wifi. Big fail for Apple.

    This packaging is an embarassment

    • Written by from Salem

Isn't apple a company that prides itself on the presentation of a product? There is way too long of a track record reporting issues with the packaging. Unfortunately I didn't see them before I opened mine. I've converted basically 100% to apple products in the last 2 years and have been generally happy with quality.

This story sounds like a joke but I promise it's not.

I, like the hoards of others, opened the product 'wrong'. Due to the resistance created by designing the base of the package and the cover in such a way that little to no air can escape as the two pieces are being separated, it takes an extra bit of force remove the cover. Certainly not a lot but enough that I realized (after the fact) that I had put in a little more effort than I would have otherwise had to.

Combine that with the fact that the recess at the base of the packaging is WAY too shallow. I measured it as an inch. The thing is holding a $300 brick with a hard drive and sharper edges. What moron thought it was a good idea to design the packaging for that piece of equipment like that? Please for the love of all that is holy make sure that guy does not ever get a chance to design a bridge. "Yeah that holes plenty deep enough, just throw the beam in. Foundations? Who needs em!"

Anyways I opened the package and needless to say the thing tipped right off the base. My unfortunate split second reaction to seeing my brand new $300 toy brick plummeting towards a tile floor was to stick my foot out. In a 'kicking' motion if you will. Like when one is juggling a soccer ball and it takes a bad bounce. You know it's going to the ground but you make a flailing effort to revive it anyways. Maybe 1 in 5 times you make sufficient contact and the ball pops back up. I made sufficient contact alright, but my iBrick did not pop back up. I struck it flush with my bare foot, shin. It was honestly the most painful experience I've had in the last several years. It is a distinct possibility I have multiple broken bones.

Other than that, I'm loving my time capsule so far!

    Rubbish

    • Written by from Norfolk

Does not do what it is supposed to. If you want to enter a world of slow back ups and be unable to access the data you have saved on the time capsule then go ahead and waste £249. It is so slow you cannot access anything on it. Enable as router - not possible unless you are a trained Internet programmer and understand double nat and dhcp. Don't waste your money...

    Disappointed

    • Written by from Trowbridge

Have to say that I'm more than a little disappointed with Apple. The expected "plug it in and it just works" was just as expected . . . at first.

My first Time Capsule was plagued with errors and I kept having trouble connecting to the drive until, after a few months, it just died.

I'll not go into the annoyance I had trying to get someone at the Apple Store to just replace the darn thing, or at least send it off for repair - Apple's insistence in booking an appointment (next week) with someone at at the Genius Bar was just going to be a waste of my time. I had to insist on seeing the manager to just get a retail replacement i.e. my consumer rights regarding faulty products. (they wouldn't send it for repair).

So, had the new one for a few months and, whilst time machine does indeed seem to be backing up both of our laptops, I still have great trouble being able to connect to the drive through Finder. Surely this should "just work" like most other Apple product, but it doesn't. I've tried all of the FAQs and Forums without results - therefore I remain disappointed.

AirPort Time Capsule - 2TB Fantastic!

    • Written by from Faringdon

Living in a new build three floored house it was hit and miss at times when i would have a wifi signal on the top floor of my house, having tried all sorts of bits and bobs to improve the signal i finally dig deep and got one of these. The setup was super quick but had to work out how to turn off the wifi signal from my sky hub took a bit of time.
I decided to try a Airport Extreme to boost it even better and i can now say there is fantastic wifi all over the house.
My biggest criticism would be the price and the 6 hours it took to do a back up but apart from that its all good.

    Keeps needing a restart

    • Written by from Hove

Macbook Pro, iPad and iPhone 6 are all fine on the network as they use the 5Ghz version.... iPhone 4s keeps losing network all the time at the 2.4Ghz keeps needing a restart. Turn off and back on again and it works again. Never had this problem once when using the BT home hub. Glad that the Macbook has got a wireless backup drive but disappointed in the amount of times I need to restart it.

    worst apple product

    • Written by from Chelmsford

....two hours of trying and the airport time capsule I bought just won't connect, sadly the instructions that where supplied where just so vague it was laughable, while I like apple products, this has to be the worst experience I have had with an apple product, sadly its going back to the shop

    AirPort Time Capsule is brilliant

    • Written by from Macclesfield

Bought a 2TB capsule to fulfill 2 objectives:- as a router to replace my BT Home Hub and to act as an external hard drive for backing up. Fully meets the objectives and whilst you could say it should do at the price, the set up was easy and speed / performance is brilliant. Well done Apple - another brilliant product that exactly meets my needs.

    superb product

    • Written by from Harrogate

I bought one of these about a month ago on powering it up it downloaded the latest firmware, I tailored it to replace my ISP router's wifi as it is useless. At first it did not give a great coverage, until `i turned off the wifi on the ISP's router which then the wifi service improved 100%. I also made the wifi SSID very simple with a more powerful password since then the WIFI and TC has been powered up all the time with backups from both my macs to it no problem. `i have since removed the back up of my desktop to a separate USB connected hard drive, because for a desktop this is a better option. A second hard drive is used to keep all my movies as a hard drive, I am able to stream 3d from my Air to TV using this as a source, with no buffering problems, first class product, People forget that WIFI is not a guaranteed speed all the time, but I am delighted.

    Ok - but glacially slow

    • Written by from London

Installation and setup is a piece of cake.
However, running backups are glacially and annoyingly slow. Wish I bought a device I can simply plug directly into the Mac and backup from there.
Also, the device hangs up regularly and needs to be restarted.
Maybe mine is just a Monday's machine, but wouldn't buy it again.

    Not really good enough

    • Written by from Beccles

I gave this three stars but it really should be two, this works as a time capsule straight from the box, but thats it, as a wireless setup, its not very good, if Im not in the same room I cant get enough signal for my Mac Book Pro to pick it up, i wanted to use it to store all my music and photos but haven't discovered how to do that yet, it will mean I will have to be in the same room to do anything with them when I do. The Apple shop in Norwich told me I have to remove the BT router when using this but they don't know what they are talking about, it has to be wired in after the router or you don't get any internet!!

    More Apple magic!

    • Written by from Streatley-on-Thames

Arrived next day and took all of 20 minutes to install as the new network hub with the Airport Extreme and Express units daisy-chained.
Did a full Time Machine backup in 8 hours - silently! (my previous ext hard-drive was very noisy). A great pice of kit.

That's 2 days of my life I won't get back

    • Written by from Sheffield

Awful product. Great idea in principal however in practice dreadful. After 3 hours struggling to get my mac to find the drive it finally started the initial back up. Next morning all appeared well however after a quick check through the back up list only 1 further successful back up had been done. Set it to back up and it started. After 10 minutes it stopped as it. "Couldn't find the disk". Tried resetting, restoring, erasing all to no joy. Airport started telling me that the drive needed repair however after not being able to find any way to do this I erased the drive and started again only then for the drive to completely disappear of my list in finder.

There are a number of 4/5 star reviews and it appears that these things either work or they don't. Personally I'm glad it failed before I had anything important on it. I'm going back to my manual back ups with a local USB drive. Far more reliable and recoverable should the worse happen and it fail.

Cracking Apple idea but either poor implementation or poor components. Really not worth the hassle or expense. There are far cheaper and more reliable alternatives out there.

Mine has gone back to the shop for a refund.

Airport Time Capsule great for WIFI......

    • Written by from Winchester

I bought this to improve my WIFI and my god its amazing............. 5 mins out the box I did a speed test and got 123mb/sec (my service is 120) so very very impressed, got 99 from iphone 5 and about 135 from my ipad air.

In terms of a back up solution not at all what I expected but probably my own fault for not checking it out properly.

I wanted something where I could literally just send a photo from iphone straight to the storage device so a bit like AirDrop, but sadly it doesnt do this.

In summary I would buy just the Airport Extreme instead of the time capsule

    Typical Apple Brilliance!

    • Written by from Worcester Park

I balked at the price and went off to find a cheaper alternative as my old back up drive had failed. The new one would work but not as stated without a complete reformat. I also had to use my Mac as the server. Having purchased the Time Capsule I Plugged the drive in and followed the simple on screen instructions. My main data is still being backed up but I can access from both the iPads and all the iPhones. That took less than ten minutes to set up without using the manual. This is excellent tech. that works out of the box.

    Airport Time capsule 2Tb

    • Written by from Ramsgate

Another excellent Apple product, I needed a seamless back up solution and fix to months of wireless woes. 10 minutes after unpacking it I was up and running and performing my initial back up from my new iMac.
It also solved my wi fi problems, neighbouring wi fi routers were making air space very limited and I frequently had annoying drop out with problems reconnecting, now I have a 5 Ghz multi channel connection which is very quick and very reliable.
The Time Capsule looks uber cool and runs silently, just as well as it is in the bedroom just a few feet away from my head on the bed side units!
An excellent and very worthwhile purchase!
