Worse Than My First Betamax Player In 1982!

    • Written by from Kettering

I bought this adaptor cable - which, at £40 works out at £10 per inch - in order to watch TV and flms streamed over the Net from Amazon Prime Instant Video via my iPad Retina through a Yamaha RX-V671 A/V decoder on to my LG HDTV. I had been trying to use my laptop but in both Chrome and Mozilla there was continuous buffering and stuttering. Before purchasing, I checked with Apple and Amazon who both stated the product would work in 1080p with surround sound. Well, the picture displayed on the screen when "browsing" is reasonably High Def but only in a reduced-size 4:3 ratio in the centre of the TV. However, once you select a programme through the Amazon Prime App and hit "play", the screen expands to 16:9 but with all the definition of a muddy puddle. All movement becomes just a confusion of pixels which, on my 47" screen, are at least quarter of an inch square. Basically, it's unwatchable. So, switch to Safari instead of the Amazon app - no difference except now we are back to continuous buffering again. With a 14Mb/s internet speed I should be getting good quality video - instead I feel like I have been transported back 30 years to the foggy dawn of Betamax accompanied by the cat sitting on the "Pause" button on the remote every 10 seconds. This really is marketing at it's most cynical. This is 2014, this is not rocket science, but I feel thoroughly cheated.

    Doesn't work

    • Written by from London

I just bought this adapter, I tried connecting it with my existing hdmi cable and it was fuzzy and so I bought a new hdmi cable. Turns out it's not the cable. The outcome is the same. The adapter is connecting to the iPad, I hear the sounds, see the mirror image of the pad, however, as soon as it is plugged, the TV screen starts to fuzz, then the TV screen colour changes green and then yellow, gradually and very quickly, then it stays like that. Can anyone tell me what the problem is; my TV? Settings somewhere? Cos I really cannot get it to work.

    Does What It Says

    • Written by from Manchester

I was having doubts buying this adapter after reading the numerous negative reviews; however, I popped into the Apple Store to talk to an Apple Specialist and I am very grateful that I did as he stated he uses one at home and it would work fine for the purpose I needed it for. After using it and having a play, it works with the following apps (the list is not exhaustive) - Netflix, BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, Demand 5 and YouTube. It does not work with 4OD (their fault not Apples) and apparently Sky (Apple Specialist informed me of this before purchase, but since I do not have Sky I was not bothered). The picture is very clear and the sound quality very good, if you want to use your iPad for streaming through your tv then this is the adapter to buy.

    Good and Bad

    • Written by from Castleknock

Firstly - Overpriced, what's new, all Apples accessory products are overpriced, that's a given.
Secondly - Some program's, Sky Go ect, will not work. To be fair this has nothing to do with this device or indeed Apple, this is because the likes of Sky and others do not want to allow you this freedom for a myriad of reasons, not Apples fault.

I am more concerned that the device works as advertised generally and here I find it to be a bit temperamental. The ideal scenario is I hook it up to the TV, launch the program and watch the video, full screen on my TV, but this does not always happen. Sometimes the video will as I said play fullscreen on my tv but not show the video on the iPad, the iPad screen will show a grey screen with a TV screen outlined. This is what I want.

Other times with the same video I will get what is called Mirroring, where the I video I am playing shows on the TV and the iPad but the video on the TV will be at a much reduced size and not upscaled at all. There does not appear to be a setting that will allow you choose either of these sceanarios, it's just pot luck, this I feel is unacceptable. To be forced to watch a video at a reduced size when I know full well the device is capable of better is infuriating.

Misleading description - does not mirror everything and has limitations

    • Written by from London

The adapter does work, but has some hardwired limitations:

    1. It steams via a built-in chip rather than pure mirroring of 'what you see on the screen' and therefore does not work in every app - crucially some which many people would probably like to use on a big screen like 4OD, Sky go and iPlayer
    2. The resolution is limited by the hardware to 1600x900. Many TVs will upscale this for you over hdmi. some will not.
    3. The compression of the streaming is noticable to me and not adjustable.

Do not buy - waste of money

    • Written by from St Helens

I'm writing this review after just buying this adapter: I really should of read the reviews first! To begin with, it is totally overpriced. Secondly, it doesn't work for the apps, from Sky to others, completely rubbish! Avoid wasting money on this product, I will be taking mine back ASAP.

Overpriced and reduced functionality - who wants to buy mine?

    • Written by from Sidcup

This adapter is very overpriced and I was disappointed that it did not do what I wanted it to.
It took me a while to get any video output from it to my 50'' LG and would only work when I pad 4 was properly switched on and off again. Sleep mode did not help.
Anyway, I eventually managed to get some video and audio to the screen but to my surprise both Sky Go and Virgin Media TV Anywhere do not work. I believe this is down to the content providers and not Apple, so just bear this in mind when deciding to purchase or not.
The weird thing is that audio was output to the tv before the I pad was booted. Video sometimes is missing and requires iPad reboot.
You Tube and other content works fine, but not for what I wanted it for.
BBC I player and ITV player work but I can do that anyway via the tv direct.
Web browsing not really any good either, as you need to look at I pad anyway to use the touch screen.
A waste of £40 for me. Adapter going on eBay tomorrow

BEWARE you have to remove the case to use this

    • Written by from Kimblesworth

I have a full leather smart case and the lightning plug end of this adapter is thicker than normal and cannot be plugged in while you have the case on so not only did I spend £95 on a case and cable but I cannot use them together. Come on apple this is not the kind of thing we expect from you. The cable works brilliantly once you remove the case. Mirroring and also streams we'll from apps

    AV Adapter works with....

    • Written by from Cambridge

Following other reviews, I bought one of these and this is what it works with so far.

FilmOn - works perfectly with all channels displaying on TV
TVCatch Up - works perfectly, although this program not as good as it once was
BBC iPlayer - worked perfectly on programs I tried
ITV Player - worked on programs I tried
Demand 5 -worked on programs I tried
    Sky Go - not working
    Sky News - worked
Netflix - worked on programs I tried
Blink box - worked on programs I tried
YouTube - worked on the ones I tried
General Apps - seemed to work OK

SkyGo comment - you can appreciate why Sky do not want this to work as they are selling their own Internet product called Now TV and would lose revenue - they are a commercial operation and money is King, so if you are after something for nothing from Sky, then it's a no-no. I do not work for Sky, by the way. I have been with them since day 1 as a customer when they were investing millions and operating at a loss and their investments are now paying off, good luck to them.

Screen resolution - as other posters have said, you can see the same size as the iPad (iPad Mini in my case) and I could zoom slightly using the TV screen options, but could not get it to fill the whole screen. Don't know about 5.1 sound, but the sound came thru the TV stereo speakers OK which is all I need.

    • Written by from churchstoke

I have used this cable to connect my iPad air to my tv. From the reviews I read it do not work on Iplayer, itv player apps and so on. However, this cable connected such apps to my tv in full screen view (the apps can be viewed on TV despite what others say) The only down side is when using none tv apps it is not full screen viewing on my tv (50inch)

    Quality product.

    • Written by from London

This does what it says on the tin - it mirrors your iDevice onto a TV screen. It works with the vast majority of Apps, including games and the built-in Videos app, the latter allowing you to watch movies in crisp 1080p.

However, some content providers (people who make films and TV programmes) do not want their programmes displayed just anywhere and, therefore, the developers of any apps that might display this content (e.g. Sky Go, Channel 4, Lovefilm) may well block you from doing so.

If you are reasonably bright, and take 5 minutes to think about the revenue implications, you will be able to see why these content providers & developers might choose this option, and therefore why Apple were compelled to provide it for them.

If not, tough luck - you will just have to accept the fact, or write to the makers of the programmes you want to stream and, if you're persistent enough, you will find out directly from them why they don't want you to do this.

But don't blame Apple - that's just childish. This device works exactly as described and intended.

Does not send 1080 signal or audio passthrough.

    • Written by from london

Max resolution is 1600 x 900 and no surround sound. The quality also seems pretty bad. Apparently the older 30pin cable was 1080 and had audio passthrough - why the step back?!

Just out of the box so early thoughts only!

    • Written by from Sunderland

Hummed and harred about buying this based on other reviews about the ability to watch BCC iPlayer and other streamed content. There does seem to be an issue with some streamed TV content. TVCatch Up (the online live freeview service) would not mirror to the TV I had my iPad connected too. However BBCiPlater worked fine with both live and watch again content and YouTube also worked fine.

The big test will be when I swap over the SKY mobile code from the laptop to the iPad to see if that will mirror ok.

I'll post again after I've tried this and on the whole a good bit of kit.

    Fine with Netflix

    • Written by from Coventry

I thought this was a bit expensive but I needed it so got it anyway.

I hadn't realised that there were issues with certain apps not working with this adaptor.

I bought it for mirroring my screen and mainly for watching Netflix on my HDTV.

For Netflix it works fine. In Netflix while choosing a film, the HDMI output shows a full screen Netflix logo, while playing the film the HDMI shows the movie as you would hope while the iPad screen shows a static Netflix logo.

Blocked by almost ALL video streaming apps, no 5.1 surround

    • Written by from Corringham

This adapter does not "mirror" what is shown on your screen, but rather "streams" it to your TV. This feature is blocked by DRM on almost all popular streaming video apps, including Amazon Instant Video, DirecTV, LoveFilm, 4od, BBC iPlayer. etc.

As another reviewer stated, the Lightning adapter is a step back from the previous iPhone HDMI adapter which did support full surround sound.

This lightning adapter does not allow 5.1 passthrough - the 30 pin adapter for ipad 2 and 3 will. Disappointing.

It does work with SOME on-demand services

    • Written by from EDINBURGH

I pondered for a while whether to get this cable or not, as I really wasn't clear which on-demand services it was compatible with. After visiting a store to ask the staff, it seems there was a little confusion at their end too, which probably isn't Apple's fault per se.

Basically, this cable will only mirror the full audio/video of on-demand apps if the app-maker/content-creator allows it. I've tried it with a few different services and, contrary to what one other commenter here says, it does actually work with iPlayer. Well, I watched a range of TV shows from my iPad Mini on the big screen, no issues, but that's not to say there won't be some shows that won't work if there is rights-related issues.

I tried it with LoveFilm, only the audio worked. With 4oD, nothing worked at all. Luckily, the main player I wanted this cable fore - Eurosport Player - does work with it.

So yeah, if you're looking to stream content from on-demand players to your TV, just bear in mind some work, some don't.

I'm giving it 4 stars because it's mostly fine for my needs, and it does actually work for content stored on the device itself, as well as YouTube and the likes. I just wish Apple would put a warning somewhere in the product description explaining the issue with on-demand - I bet a lot of folk buy this cable only to be disappointed.
