I remember the day when these came with the computer!

    • Written by from Leeds

Well I expected the Superdrive to be exactly that, lightning quick. Well it's not; whereas my old drive that actually came with the computer could burn (DVD) discs at x 16, this one only burns at x 8. The lead is very short and at £65, well, there are cheaper versions that could no doubt do a similar if not better job, come on Apple...!

    Not so Super?

    • Written by from Ballater

With the withdrawal of disc drives from newer Macbooks & iMacs, I felt obliged to buy one of these to install a variety of software on both Mac OSX & in the Bootcamp Win7 partition. All worked fine.

It's also very transportable, being light, thin, and no external power supply required.

    However......

The simple task of playing music CDs, in order to rip them to iTunes, appears to be a little too much for these drives. As others have already commented, a percentage of perfect-quality & clean CDs simply don't do anything, and also fail to eject, sometimes requiring a power-restart before they are recognised.

I was also surprised to find that HDCDs (found in quite a few basic CD box sets) are unreadable.....whether this is the drive's fault, or Apple's software, may be another issue as I've not yet investigated that problem......but really, when we're paying close to £2,000 for our hardware, you might expect that it would read all disc formats & do so with a high degree of competence?

Back to Lacie drives again, I think.

Works fine and weighs next to nothing

    • Written by from Burnham

I don't like to give 5 stars as I don't think any product is perfect, but this works perfectly fine - it does what it should do. It also weighs next to nothing and has a brilliant design.

I bought it just in case I'd need it sometime; I'd recommend it.

I purchased this unit a short time after buying a retina mac book pro. It's nearly possible to do with out a DVD drive now, but some times you just have to have one!
Overall the physical design is in line with the mac book. I have always found apples cables to be a bit of a let down in terms of quality, it is also a little short. The cable is also captive, so if it gets damaged thats it. To that end it would have been nicer if the cable could detach or be coiled away in the unit, for protection. It would also be nice to have an eject button for when you just want to get the disk out quickly.
As far as functionality goes the drive plays & burns most types of disc (excluding blue-ray) including dual layer DVDs, storing up to 8.5GB. The only technical drawback i have found so far, is that the drive does not let you set the Book-type or bit-setting. This feature helps maximise compatibility. I doubt this will be forthcoming, so will have to keep a PC around for a while yet.

Good but that cable is ridiculous!

    • Written by from Leamington Spa

It was as always beautifully packaged! Like it or not I have need of an optical drive for my 2014 27" i7 iMac and its design is superb as one would expect. It sits neatly at the base of the iMac. However if you want to hide the cable by putting it up through the cable hold Apple so thoughtfully put in the stand, it cannot reach the nearest of the USB ports!! So you either have the ugly white cable in view dragging on the desk (very un-Apple) of get an extension. So for the sake on 1 inch of cable I have a 2ft extension cable!

In terms of quality and play back it really is very good, I use it mainly to transfer my ancient DVD collection into a digital archive as they occupy so much space. However if you are using it for this and need to make sure quality is maximised, ensure the software you use allows safe mode, de-interlacing and operates a high quality engine. While it plays back perfectly well from disk, it's not so good copying the data. Burn rates are fine but had issues with MP3 CD's we use in our classic car, had to slow the burn time down.

    Rackety drive

Agree with the other 1* reviews. Not being able (or willing) to read 1 disk in 5 is just about fine, but then being utterly unable to eject it, NOT fine. Why no means to physically expel a troublesome disk? Just NOT worth the trouble.

    Beautiful CD Drive

    • Written by from Salford

It is only a CD drive, so there is only so much you can say about it, but the construction and design is beautiful, it works flawlessly and is in its own way elegant. The only downside is that is it expensive! I don't think £65 is a good price, but if you have a MacBook, then it is essential!

    Disappointingly unreliable

    • Written by from Largs

Have owned this drive for just over a year, have used it only occasionally and until recently was very happy with it. Stylish like all Apple products and met my needs. However, recently it has stopped taking in disks and looks like a terminal failure. Would have expected better reliability for the price.

It works really well but I think it would benefit a lot from having a detachable USB cable. Other than that, it's great!

Easy to use and great design!

    • Written by from Bath

I bought this USB SuperDrive for my 15" retina display macbook pro.

It's so easy to use, just plug into the USB port, and then insert the disk as you would on a imac or an earlier version of the macbook pro. I have used this for DVDs and to rip CDs to itunes. It is also easy to backup music from itunes onto a CD.

The cable is about 30cm. On a flat surface this is plenty to connect the SuperDrive while having the front of it face you, and have it a fair distance away from your mac.

In conclusion it is a great product, easily connectable to your mac, and a sleek design matching the scheme of your mac.

    Not very super

    • Written by from galashiels

I loaded one commercial product using it. All seemed well. I loaded a second product and the drive refused to eject the disc. Loading two programs before failure is not a good record.
I'll be taking it back to the shop. Do I just hope I was unlucky?

Ok but slow to rip CD's

    • Written by from Falmouth

I bought this to use with my 2013 retina MBP for ripping CD's to network storage for HiFi use. It looks great and works fine but it is far slower than the built in drive in my old MBP was.

So if you are planning on using one for ripping your entire CD collection then you may want to explore other options but for occasional use it's great.

    Nothing super about it

    • Written by from Basel

I bought one of these with my new iMAC and it is so slow (max 8 X) with only USB connectivity (USB 2 only, I think). The iMAC has USB3 and Thunderbolt, so is capable of supporting a far faster drive. It also fails to recognise some rewriteable DVDs. Fortunately, I don't need to use the drive very often, but it's a pain when I do. It looks nice, but the functionality is very poor. Personally, I would now buy a faster external USB3 drive with blu-ray.

    Simple & Effective

    • Written by from Petersfield

I purchased this to go with my MacBook Air. The styling fits perfectly with the Air and the drive is reliable and fits in a the back pocket of the Incase laptop bag containing the MB Air. If there has to be one criticism (although its unfair to call it that), it is the USB lead maybe susceptible to be being damaged [it is fixed in to the drive] if not stowed with care. That's down to the user and not Apple.

I bought this product as the MacBook Air has no DVD drive built in. I now also have an iMac and use it for both machines. It is good value for money. I have had it 18 months now and have not found any faults or hiccups with it. It works perfectly well at all times. It is light, small and slim and easy to carry around with the laptop.
