    Buy this drive...

I had a bad experience buying a cheap disk drive that stressed me out so much during install it almost got thrown out the window. This drive was effortless, loading disks instantly. Highly recommended.

Personally, I found the DVD drive to be perfect. It's extremely fast and very elegant. It compliments the new late 2012 iMacs with no optical drive perfectly. 5/5! Perfection as always from Apple!

    Could be better

    • Written by from SHEFFIELD

I find this drive to be quite slow at importing any CD's into iTunes on my MacBook Pro Retina. Import times average around x6. My 7 year old PC can import the same CD at around 25x?
I've not tried with any other CD drives on my Mac so maybe I'm wrong to blame the drive. I'll not dock any stars for this reason, but it's still worth a mention.

The build quality is excellent, as I'd expect for the price. It loses stars simply because of the short USB cable that cannot be detached, I'd expect a bit more at this level.

Only Get One if You Need It!

    • Written by from Northampton

The SuperDrive does what you expect it to do perfectly! You pop your disk in, it does it's business and then your done you can take the disk out. But...

I personal bought the SuperDrive with the newest iMac because of it's lack of built in optical drive. I thought to my self that I would NEED some sort of disk drive and that Apple had jumped the gun with removing the optical drive and going all digital media.

But after receiving the SuperDrive I have not used it once. On one hand it's a waste of £60 and on the other it shows that most types of media or programs simply don't require an install disk.

Also the USB wire is really too short! It comfortably sits below the USB ports but try and move it any further towards you and it's a no go.

The moral of the story is that only buy one if you have a specific requirement for it, for example you wish to BootCamp Windows 7 or you buy all of your films on DVD format.

    Disappointingly unreliable

    • Written by from Largs

Have owned this drive for just over a year, have used it only occasionally and until recently was very happy with it. Stylish like all Apple products and met my needs. However, recently it has stopped taking in disks and looks like a terminal failure. Would have expected better reliability for the price.

Purchased this when I got my new iMac as i still use CD's in my car and it works really well. I read some of the reviews left for this item and there are a mixed bunch, but so far in my experience, its worked really well and does the job well.

Good for the money and looks tidy next to my new slim iMac.

lines on MacBook Air screen since using USB SuperDrive

    • Written by from Uxbridge

my husband bought me an Apple USB SuperDrive today from the apple store, but within half an hour of using it my MacBook Air was covered in vertical lines which also moved around with the mouse.

Neither macbook nor superdrive had become hot.

Rebooting didn't help - leaving it an hour has helped but now very worried it will happen again.

I bought this product as the MacBook Air has no DVD drive built in. I now also have an iMac and use it for both machines. It is good value for money. I have had it 18 months now and have not found any faults or hiccups with it. It works perfectly well at all times. It is light, small and slim and easy to carry around with the laptop.

    A Surprisingly Poor Product

    • Written by from Woodfield

When nearly everything made by Apple gives me real pleasure to use, it's disappointing to have to write a review of a product as poor as this. In line with other one-star reviewers, I have found it to be a consistently unreliable and unsatisfactory product. Minor points - the built-in USB cable is annoyingly short, and there's no eject button. More importantly, from Day One it refused to read pre-recorded DVDs. It became increasingly prima-donna-ish with CDs or DVDs which I had recorded myself, and now usually won't read them either. That's when the eject button problem becomes very annoying; how many times do I want to unplug the drive and then plug it in again, hoping that eventually it will respond to an eject command from the keyboard? It's awful, folks - I won't be buying another.

Ok but slow to rip CD's

    • Written by from Falmouth

I bought this to use with my 2013 retina MBP for ripping CD's to network storage for HiFi use. It looks great and works fine but it is far slower than the built in drive in my old MBP was.

So if you are planning on using one for ripping your entire CD collection then you may want to explore other options but for occasional use it's great.

    Looks great, works great.

I'm not sure what people's general opinions are about the removal of built-in optical drives, but honestly I'm glad my MacBook Pro didn't come with one when I ordered it late-2013. Naturally it meant I had to buy an external optical drive and I have used it plenty of times. I have never had any serious issues; the only minor problems I've had is when I've been using blank discs and not told the drive to do anything with it so then the MacBook Pro stops recognising there's a disc in there. But that's the advantage of it being external - No force eject required, I could just unplug and plug it back in again!

Really easy to use and having it means I can also lend it to my dad when he needs to use discs. Highly recommend this if you use discs on a reasonably regular basis.

Ok but some advanced users will be dissapointed

    • Written by from Kesgrave

I purchased this unit a short time after buying a retina mac book pro. It's nearly possible to do with out a DVD drive now, but some times you just have to have one!
Overall the physical design is in line with the mac book. I have always found apples cables to be a bit of a let down in terms of quality, it is also a little short. The cable is also captive, so if it gets damaged thats it. To that end it would have been nicer if the cable could detach or be coiled away in the unit, for protection. It would also be nice to have an eject button for when you just want to get the disk out quickly.
As far as functionality goes the drive plays & burns most types of disc (excluding blue-ray) including dual layer DVDs, storing up to 8.5GB. The only technical drawback i have found so far, is that the drive does not let you set the Book-type or bit-setting. This feature helps maximise compatibility. I doubt this will be forthcoming, so will have to keep a PC around for a while yet.

    Beautiful CD Drive

    • Written by from Salford

It is only a CD drive, so there is only so much you can say about it, but the construction and design is beautiful, it works flawlessly and is in its own way elegant. The only downside is that is it expensive! I don't think £65 is a good price, but if you have a MacBook, then it is essential!

    Simple & Effective

    • Written by from Petersfield

I purchased this to go with my MacBook Air. The styling fits perfectly with the Air and the drive is reliable and fits in a the back pocket of the Incase laptop bag containing the MB Air. If there has to be one criticism (although its unfair to call it that), it is the USB lead maybe susceptible to be being damaged [it is fixed in to the drive] if not stowed with care. That's down to the user and not Apple.

    A very handy accessory

    • Written by from Raunds

It is a little annoying that Apple have chosen not to fit optical drives to Macs anymore as there are a few of us dinosaurs still left that like to use them.
This, however, plugs the gap just nicely.
I bought this so that I could upload all of my music CD's and ripped DVD's to my iTunes library.
This it has done without any problem whatsoever. Simply plug in the USB and you're good to go.
It's design is sleek and unobtrusive and it sits comfortably on the desk whilst the finish compliments the iMac, keyboard and magic trackpad nicely.
All in all it has performed as well as the built-in drive on my wife's MBP and I would happily recommend it to anyone.

Sad to write this review as I love Most Apple products. I bought a USB Superdrive with my iMac less than 2 years ago. The drive is only used infrequently for storing or retrieving photographs. The first one became unusable in less than a year. It wouldn't eject the disc and I lost all the data stored on it. Neither would it register on the iMac so I couldn't force eject the disc either. It was replaced and unbelievably in less than a year the replacement has done exactly the same thing and is unusable. We have quite a number of Apple Products in our house and this one seems to be the white elephant!

I bought this for my new iMac 21.5 inch and it is working a treat.I can put all off my cd's in it and i can easily burn all of my dj mix's onto it.It has a amazing design and it fits beautifully on my desk as it has a sleek aluminium design just like the design on my iMac.There is only one problem with it,it is just a little bit overpriced but if you have the money for it i would definaitly recommend it.I hope that this has helped you with your purchases in the apple store.i am a huge fan of apple and all of there products for me have 100 percent amazing and i would highly recommend it to all of the people who want windows,to play movies or if you are a heavy gamer.Have a great day.
