    Essential and flawless!

    • Written by from Chigwell

I purchased this 2012 updated Super Drive directly from Apple at the same time I ordered my MacBook Air (due to it not having a built-in disc drive).

It looks similar to the previously released Super Drive. However Apple claims that this updated model supports the new Retina Display MacBook, as well as providing support for other macs that do not come equipped with a built-in drive. It is well constructed and from the moment you open the box, you know you are in for a high quality item.

The drives footprint is no larger than a standard CD case; I have taken mine in my bag to work and had no problems with added bulk or weight. It connects to the mac via USB and there is no additional software to install. It has not failed to recognise any DVD or CD that I have inserted. With a slot loading mechanism, there are no buttons on the drive and no hatches to lift. Simply insert the disc by sliding it in the slot and remove via the on screen eject button. I feel obliged to add that the cable from the Super Drive is fairly short (~12 inches). This may be a pro or con, depending on your needs, but the cable can be extended using a usb extension.

Conclusively, the Super Drive is a premium product that works well out of the box, and presents with no issues. What you are getting is a device that compliments the aesthetics of your mac and functions efficiently. 5/5

    Great but..!

    • Written by from West Bromwich

Simple and straightforward, this drive does what it says on the tin. One caveat however, is that the usb lead used to connect the drive is ridiculously short which sometimes makes it inconvenient to use. You would think for the price charged Apple would supply an extension to the lead in case it was needed.

    Disappointing

    • Written by from HAILSHAM

I bought this specifically to read information provided on DVD-RW media, but the product does not work.

The same disc reads on the MacBook Pro (with built in drive) but is not recognised when inserted into a Superdrive connected to the new iMac or MacBook Pro Retina.

All credit to the Genius Bar team at Apple Brighton for trying various drives and machine combinations before eventually giving up refunding the purchase price.

Subsequent to visiting the Genius Bar, I bought a competitors ultra-slim slot-in external drive from Amazon. The replacement is smaller, lighter and quieter than Apple's USB SuperDrive and when plugged into the same MacBook Pro 13" Retina it immediately recognised the DVD-RW media that the SuperDrive wouldn't read.

The replacement drive also works on older Apple products with CD/DVD drives, products specifically noted as not supported in the SuperDrive's technical description.

Yes, the case is plastic, rather than aluminium, but as the drive works and is roughly 1/3 of the price of Apple's disappointing product I'm prepared to accept function over tactile feel.

    Looks great, but doesn't work

    • Written by from Tring

does not import cds from some labels such as atlantic etc. Apple need to stop worrying about the competition copying their ideas and start focusing on there own products that are failing. Otherwise the competition will rise above them simply by making a product that works. Disappointed apple, are you starting to loose the plot?

    Super, super Drive

    • Written by from Workington

I bought the Super Drive for my new 2012 iMac.

I've used a few different types and brands of cd's and DVD's and all work fine even RW media.

I find the Super Drive quiet and it fits perfectly on the foot of the iMac's stand and is within very easy reach too on here. Also, the Super Drive matches the elegant design of the iMac.

Drives I've owned in the past have been the draw type. Since using the Super Drive, I find the lack of a draw to be better. The reason I say this is because, if room is tight on your desk, you need to have enough room for when the draw comes out, whereas with the Super Drive, the disk just slots neatly into the slot.

If you want a drive that will match you iMac, Macbook, then look no further than the Super Drive. If you are not bothered about it matching then save yourself £20 or so and go for another type.

Despite the mixed reviews, I cannot fault the Super Drive, but be aware that the non detachable cable on the Super Drive is very short. If you are planning to use it on either on the foot of the iMac's stand or next to your Macbook, then the short length won't be a problem. But if you are wanting it placed on the other side of your desk then you will need a USB extension cable.

Brought this to use with my mac book air as I have a lot of DVD which I like to watch some times and I can say it is great DVD player sound and play back very good and easy to use as you only plug in via USB and size is good too as only the size of a cd case

    Gave up on me

    • Written by from Lewes

I bought this about a year ago and barely used it. It stopped being able to read discs, just does whir/to/fro noise and then spits out. Mostly love apple but lemons like this really annoy me. Poor showing Apple.

    Unreliable, fails to read discs

    • Written by from London

I'm now on my second one of these, after the first completely gave up the ghost.

Consistently it fails on lightly scratched DVDs, where as my older but larger Sony drive sails through.

It's therefore pretty much useless unless all your DVDs are treated with kid-gloves, and you never need to be sure that it's going to give best-effort at reading.

Avoid - buy a different manufacturers one.

ok but sometimes it wont eject

    • Written by from Kendal

Worked fine for a few weeks and then it decided it wouldn't eject, seems like the disk is catching on the inside of the housing, works if you give it a jiggle, not ideal though. Trying to decided if I need to get a replacement or if its something I can live with. CD drives aren't Apples strong point any more it would seem.

it reads no disc at all and has wrecked one of my dvd by trying to burn it! do not buy this because it doesn't even work! trust me I've been a apple fanboy for years I've got more apple products than the years I've been on this planet..and i can say without a doubt this does not even deserve to be called an apple product..so if you are going to buy something trust me and buy a load cheeper windows dvd player that at least works.

    Nothing super about it

    • Written by from Basel

I bought one of these with my new iMAC and it is so slow (max 8 X) with only USB connectivity (USB 2 only, I think). The iMAC has USB3 and Thunderbolt, so is capable of supporting a far faster drive. It also fails to recognise some rewriteable DVDs. Fortunately, I don't need to use the drive very often, but it's a pain when I do. It looks nice, but the functionality is very poor. Personally, I would now buy a faster external USB3 drive with blu-ray.

Just tested it with one of my oldest back up dvds and it loaded fast and without any problems at all. It actually feels a bit faster than the one in my iMac.

I had a bad experience buying a cheap disk drive that stressed me out so much during install it almost got thrown out the window. This drive was effortless, loading disks instantly. Highly recommended.

Personally, I found the DVD drive to be perfect. It's extremely fast and very elegant. It compliments the new late 2012 iMacs with no optical drive perfectly. 5/5! Perfection as always from Apple!

    Could be better

    • Written by from SHEFFIELD

I find this drive to be quite slow at importing any CD's into iTunes on my MacBook Pro Retina. Import times average around x6. My 7 year old PC can import the same CD at around 25x?
I've not tried with any other CD drives on my Mac so maybe I'm wrong to blame the drive. I'll not dock any stars for this reason, but it's still worth a mention.

The build quality is excellent, as I'd expect for the price. It loses stars simply because of the short USB cable that cannot be detached, I'd expect a bit more at this level.

    Where is Blu-ray support!!!

    • Written by from London

I just bought my first Mac (Macbook Pro retina) which i absolutely love and am shocked to find that there is still no 'official' support from Apple in the way of Blu-ray hardware support / playback. Get it together guys!
