    Keeps failing

    • Written by from Mountain View

We have dozens of these at my office. The failure rate is incredible. 1-in-3 power adapters have failed in less than a year. Coming from Apple, I'm very surprised at the poor quality.

    Weak Cable

    • Written by from St Austell

The thickness of the cable is too thin, Just by having the cable on the floor and accidently catching it with my chair wheel split the insulation and is showing the metal wire. Not Good

Not an improvement: can no longer my laptop in lap

    • Written by from Concord

I had the previous generation MBP, with the l-shaped MagSafe adapter, and loved the charger. It saved my laptop from being knocked off a table or desk countless times. I was excited to get the new, improved version of this charger. Unfortunately, the upgrade seems to be in most ways worse. It's much more easily knocked out (due in part to an apparently weaker magnet, and to the extra leverage provided by it's more protrusive shape), to the point of being extremely inconvenient. Using the laptop on soft surfaces, frequently causes the charger to be angled in such a way that it will connect intermittently or disconnect altogether. This can't be good for the charger, never mind how frustrating it is to plug your laptop in in the knick of time before it dies just to knock the cord out and have it shut down anyways. Most frustrating of all, I have a very hard time finding a position for the laptop in my lap that doesn't knock the charger out. There's irony in there somewhere. Other than that, it gets significantly hotter than the previous version, and the material of the cord feels "cheaper" (although this might just be colored by my other experiences with the product.) Hopefully they'll release an l-shaped charger compatible with this generation of macbook, but knowing Apple, that seems unlikely.

    ANNOYING. Knocked out too easily

    • Written by from Garland

The head of the charger protrudes from the socket, and with the weakest magnetic force keeping it in place this thing gets knocked out. A LOT. You would think the designers would improve upon last generation's design, but it's only gotten dumber.

Not as bad as everyone lets on, but not perfect.

    • Written by from Somewhere

The charger is fine. The people who are complaining must use their equipment in very strange (inappropriate) conditions. Melting power bricks and frayed wires sound like a user-related issues. If you are careful when you wind your cable up and keep the power adapter in a sensible location, it will last you a long time. That said, as an owner of a Summer 2012 Retina MacBook Pro, I've noticed a little bit of small cracking in the rubber cable shielding near the input point on the brick. This is the point that gets the most stress, as it is where the cable is pulled to its greatest angle when winding it up for storage. It would be nice to see Apple considering the potential for this kind of wear; a stronger, more flexible support point would be useful.

    A downgrade...

    • Written by from Straumsgrend

This Magsafe 2 connector is a tremendous stepback in design and functionality. The original Magsafe was great because it didn´t stick out and protuded to the side, but was sleek and the cable went back and around the chassis (dependable which way you stuck it in). This new one could be cutting edge in 1995. I am constantly knocking it off its socket, and magnet seems to be weaker as well. Jobs would NEVER allow this horrendous redesign. The excuse of changing it due to their new thin macbook retinas is something i refuse to believe. CHANGE IT BACK!!!

    6 months and then bang

    • Written by from Wishaw

As my title says.......6 months and then bang, I plugged in my power adapter this morning and after 5 minutes there was a bang, a smell of burning and a black streak up the wall, after only 6 months of use this is not what I expect after paying more than 2500 UK Pounds. After having more than 20 windows based laptops over the years and never having a faulty power adapter I feel absolutely disgusted and let down by Apple.

Poor design, overheated leaving bare wires

    • Written by from LEICESTER

The PSU gets incredibly hot, after 1 year the cable coming out of the PSU to the macbook yellowed and finally has melted/broken leaving bare wires giving me a small shock when I investigated why my macbook was not charging. This needs a serious design rethink. I'll buy another only as I have no option if I need to continue to use the rMBP but from now on treat it as potentially dangerous. It appears from other reviews mine is not the only one that has issues.

Another power cord bites the dust.

    • Written by from Edinburgh

A wonderfully design laptop, but the power cord is completely useless. This one has decided to overheat and melt through the cable that connects the adapter to the laptop. I wish you would sort this design out as I getting rather bored of shelling out £65 because of your incompetence.

    Cable too fragile

    • Written by from York

Charges in good time, magnet works great for not destroying the cable or computer if it gets pulled. The cable split open in two places near where it connects to the computer, after about 18 months.
Definitely a bad design with how thin the plastic casing is, but Apple agreed to send me a free replacement immediately, so swings and roundabouts!

    Needs sorting

    • Written by from OXFORD

This new charger has a magnet which is too weak, the cable is fraying and the lugs for coiling up the wire have broken in 6 months of heavy use. Not Apple standard I'm afraid

    Terrible quality

    • Written by from London

What an utter piece of s***. Haven't even had my laptop a year and the charger is already useless. The wires have become exposed so it no longer works. Went to the apple store today to get a new one, surprise surprise they are all out of stock...probably because everyone who owns one has had to replace their's too. Sort it out Apple!

The slimmer version was MUCH better

    • Written by from Fishers

I miss my slim power connector from my previous MBP. This thing is huge and sticks way off the corner of my laptop. It falls off way too easily and gets in the way. Huge pain! Bring back the old slim power connector!

    Terrible Quality

    • Written by from Mountshannon

The cable started to fray at the mag2 connector exactly one year after I bought it and after 6 months of patching it up, it gave up and was beyond repair. This is just from completely normal use and is really not acceptable! Really really disappointing and annoying after paying over €2000 for the laptop.

    Shockingly Poor ...

    • Written by from Blackheath

This product is so poor, it's laughable. All the painfully slow, monotoned Sir Jony Ive interviews I've endured over the last decade telling me how design is the most important thing since the pending second coming and yet the Apple design team are clearly incapable of securing a cable to a plastic box at one end and an aluminium plug on the other. Nearly burnt my house down today. Truly terrible.

    Terrible connection, very frustrating product.

    • Written by from Amsterdam

Unlike the Magsafe 1 this new version has the connector fall out at the slightest touch. Unbelievable how Apple could release such a product. I wish I could go back to the Magsafe 1 that worked flawless.

    Bad design

    • Written by from London

As people wrote before me, after a year, cable got fried. But I went to apple store and after 10 minutes they replaced it for a new one without stupid questions.
One star, because the product is really rubbish. But there's not other option ...

    Nightmare

    • Written by from Killorglin

I have to agree with all the other reviewers.
My Macbook pro is Mid 2010 and I am happy with it but now AGAIN, third time the charger is gone.
genuine Apple charger and they do NOT last more than a year, 18 months. I am forced to buy the third one now.
I am totally disappointed, the quality is bad, gets very hot and simply does NOT last!!

    Bad Apple, Bad!!!
