    Very poor quality - avoid!

    • Written by from Montrose

I purchased my first case with my iPad 4 just over a year ago. Never a perfect fit, within a couple of months it stretched enough that the iPad would occasionally pop out of the case. I returned to the Apple Store where I bought both items and they replaced the case without question. Now, some eight months later, the seam along the bottom edge of my second case has split open.

I am quite frankly appalled that such a product is sold by Apple who have a reputation for building quality products. I intend to return to the store again to complain about this.

CASE SPLITS AT SEAM - AVOID

    • Written by from Exeter

I am a dedicated Mac fan because of the excellent design and build quality. Sadly this case fails. It has split apart along the seam that joins the back to the front retaining edge. And this is not due to the iPad being removed all the time. It has been simply left in place. This issue has been noted by several other reviewers. Maybe the latest Air case is better, but the previous model is best avoided. Check the Air case reviews in a few months and this should reveal if the problem has been addressed. But for now - best look elsewhere.

    Not great

    • Written by from London

I can't recommend this case. It's not comfortable to hold. The "stand" is unstable. It gets dirty very quickly and mine allowed grit to get inside and marked the back of my iPad. Then it fell part after 3 months.
    Look elsewhere.

    Totally rubbish

    • Written by from birmingham

I have this case in red and it's totally rubbish, it has literally fallen apart and I've not had it that long. I would definitely not recommend anyone to buy this product. It is a total waste of money. I would have posted pictures of how it has fallen apart but there is no option to attach photos.

Poorly made and NOT for iPad 4th gen.

    • Written by from BEXLEYHEATH

I have a 4th generation iPad, and the case always felt really loose. Now, after a year, the case has completely split open on the right and bottom (happened gradually over the last 3 months), making it unusable. Thanks a lot Apple!!!

    Not worth the money

    • Written by from Grantham

We bought this case for our ipad and were initially very impressed. We wanted a decent level of protection as we were moving to Australia and wanted to take our ipad on the plane etc without worrying. Our case has completely fallen apart and is now absolutely useless. For the amount we paid I expected it to last longer. We took it to our local Australian Apple shop who said they have seen this before but couldn't help us as the case was bought in the UK, pretty disappointed. Wouldn't recommend unless you are looking for something short term.

Original iPad case was bad. No change.

    • Written by from Swindon

The original ipad case wouldn't allow you to use a dock because of protruding seams. This new case is just as bad - no worse. Sharp edges, loose fitting and the plastic welding around the connector hole has started separating. So it is only a matter if time before it falls apart completely. Shame apple corp doesn't spend as much time designing accessories as they do on slick UI. Won't buy an Apple case again. Very poor.

    Not a quality product!

    • Written by from chorleywood

If you decide to spend a few hundred pounds on an ipad retina then you would think a genuine Apple case would protect it? Wrong!!
This case is just awful. It doesn't fit snuggly around the device, It bows out around both sides so essentially the ipad is only held by the top and bottom. The edges of the case are quite sharp so if used for a period of time then it becomes uncomfortable.
I would advise against anyone purchasing this product. Very disappointed.

    Terrible - waste of money

    • Written by from Sudbury

I'm the most careful user of anything!

However, this so-called 'Smart' case if far from adequate. At £40, I expect more than 6 months usage from it. The folding design doesn't give enough of a base for the iPad to stand-up on, meaning it's top-heavy and falls over.

The fabric lining has come away from the actual inside bits, so it looks extremely tatty, and offers no screen protection any more. The poly edges have also discoloured and dog-eared. It also shows up so many stains - it's disgusting! I can't imagine what it must look like if it was an unclean person using it!

The case has sagged away from the hinge meaning the magnets no longer line up properly, rendering the automatic on/off function useless. I found that out the hard way when I shut the cover, came back hours later to find the battery had gone dead as it had been on all that time!

The cover leaves streaks of grease on the iPad screen which looks horrid. It also causes more scratch damage than it stops... They way the cover folds back on itself to stand up, means the *inside* of it is standing on the surface. Therefore any grit, dirt, crumbs etc. that are on the surface will stick to the cover, and in turn scratch against the screen on closing. You can tell when this has happened, as the scratches are perfectly straight, and parallel to the edges etc.

The cover doesn't actually provide much protection. A slight tap on the corner of the device caused the screen to crack - something that the cover should really have protected it from.

Then there's the damage it does to the back. Not only a build-up of dirt, but actually rubbing off the silver-coloured anodized back of the iPad. Mine has horrible superficial wears all along the edge, as well as two severely deep gouges that are now almost a black colour.

All in all, I suggest strongly avoiding this case. Go for a cheaper alternative, even if it means replacing it a dozen times! Still be cheaper than this.

    such a disappointing design

    • Written by from Nottingham

It's an overpriced product with lot flaws. The edge of the under cover is quite sharp which makes hands very uncomfortable to hold it. The top cover is so difficult to lift, you need to use your nail to open it. £39 is not worth it.

    Not for the ipad 2

    • Written by from Poulton

I had high hopes for this case, especially given it costs more than some mp3 players.

It seems that no one, not even apple can get the slimline smart case right. The fit on my ipad 2 was appalling. So much so that it didnt even hold it in the case. A small knock and it popped out. Luckily onto a duvet but could have been the end of my ipad if out and about.

The case itself feels nice but no use if it doesn't fit. Maybe it fits the later ones better but i've bought a £5 case from the far east instead. Fits better, offers just as much protection and although it doesnt feel as good quality its automatically better for the fact it will hold my ipad in place.

In summary an overpriced product and absolute waste of money. Took it back the same day.

    Worst apple purchase i made

    • Written by from London

This is a truly disappointing apple product.

I have an ipad 3, The case works OK in terms of the ipad sitting inside it, but the so called 'propping up' that you are able to do with the rear of the case doesnt work.

In the upright position, there is a danger it will fall over, so you have to hold it steady. The whole rear of the case feels unstable, and not thought through. It sags when its in the lower position too, meaning the screen is only slightly inclined when in this position. The ipad cover is much better and i wish i had bought that instead.

Also the headphone jack doesnt fit some headphone jacks so you have to partiallly remove the case to listen to music.

These are simple things! Apple what happened here? And can i get my money back?

iPad smart case - iPad 4

    • Written by from Leamington Spa

I wanted a case rather than just a cover for the front, but I wish I had just got the cover and bought a case for the back somewhere else. It feels loose on my iPad though it isn't in any danger of falling out. However, the sides of the case come up above the surface of the iPad so dust or crumbs collect around the edges, or fall inside the case (as it isn't a tight fit), as you can't brush them off.
It also makes the iPad seem bigger because it comes up towards the front at an angle instead of hugging the sides. In addition to this it is fiddly to actually lift the cover up because the case comes out further than the cover all round, you need to have decent finger nails to get under the cover to lift it.
The cover does the job of covering, but for typing it is too shallow an angle, and for watching TV it is very precarious, just a small tap of the screen knocks it over.

Very disappointed, particularly as they are SO expensive compared to other brands. Would have got 2 stars but the price knocks it down to 1.

    Not a good fit

    • Written by from Leicester

Disappointed I've just had this as a Christmas present as i found the previous screen cover only, wasn't enough protection. However it doesn't fit snug enough into the smartcase and the headphone socket is also causes a problem with sound when headphones are connected.

smart case not a perfect fit for 4th gen iPad

    • Written by from Hounslow

I gave single star b'cos the case is not snug fitting the new iPad (4th gen). Very disappointing product from apple for such an expensive case, 40quit!! .
The case is very loose especially on the longer sides of the pad, the case slips off. The case is just touching the edges not covering and holding the sides, the case stays by holding just 4corners of the pad. The cover should have made slightly smaller in size or more overlapping on to the bezel, another 3millis should have been perfect. Overall this case is not perfect for iPad 4.

    Poor fit, uncomfortable to hold

    • Written by from Portsmouth

I have an ipad w/ retina and lightning connector and I find that the case does not fit well at all. The case is constantly popping off around the edges and there are visible gaps around the edge. The case is also not comfortable to hold thanks to way the two sides of the case are sandwiched and bonded together: the edge of the case is very sharp and rigid. The only thing going for the case is its looks and the ipad screen goes off when the cover is closed.

    High hopes

    • Written by from STEVENAGE

My wife has a Smart Cover for her iPad, works a treat, so when I saw they did a smart case in dark grey I decided to get one.

I shouldn't have, it adds a good 10mm to the top and sides making it feel bulky, it has a deep lip from the edge to the screen, as already mentioned, the cover doesn't stay closed when resting on the hinged edge, forget turning it upside down as the cover just slowly slides down under it's own weight then flops open.

The stand folded, it doesn't keep the iPad in place and tends to spring out flattening the tilt of the screen.

Again, seeing as Apple make the camera connection kit for the iPad, you'd think they'd make the dock connector big enough to fit, it doesn't and if you do squeeze it in the polyurethane spits it back out.

Sorry Apple, you need to take this one back to the drawing board. Too many design faults and much better Smart Cover and 3rd party back cover combinations available to make this worth considering, wish I had read the reviews first.

    Don't believe the hype

    • Written by from Salisbury

I have an iPad 2, iPhone, MacBook Pro, Time Machine, Apple TV. My wife and kids all have iPhones so I'm all hooked up, right.

I am except for this, the fit is poor, use it folded to make your iPad keyboard friendly and it bounces. Use it on a plane to watch films and any minor turbulence I feel the need to hold onto it like a lympit such is the poor stability. I hate to say this I really do but this is the worst Apple product I've ever bought.

    Poor design

    • Written by from Warrington

I bought this with the camera adapter and the apple rep said nothing.. I was pleased with everything until I tried to connect the camera adapter.. The hole at the bottom of the case will ONLY take the power adaptor NOT the camera adapter as the hole is to small.. So what puzzles me is 1) why the apple rep didn't say anything (poor product knowledge) and more importantly 2) both products are made by Apple so why didn't they just resolve it and make the case so that it will accommodate the adapter.. Poorly thought out Apple, your products aren't cheap so they should be better thought out.. Dissapointing to say the least..
