18 month is not good enough

    • Written by from Kgs. Lyngby

My 1GB TM died after 18 month. I loved it. I didn't think about backups at all, it just worked. But I have had two TMs now, and they both died after about 18 month. That is not good enough.

I've had two of these devices fail, one within and another out of warranty.

    Awesome

Have the 500gb version for 4 years ...still working and very useful as a wireless bridge in a 4 story house.
Easy to use and setup .

    So far so good.

    • Written by from Gateshead

Great product and very happy. Have 14 devices that can access the internet and the sky wireless router was starting to struggle. Also had some blackspots in the house and needed a back up solution for the imac. Once wireless settings on the sky router where turned off installation was so simple. Now have an N capable wireless solution which is much much faster and no blackspots - and back up was very fast and easy. Just hope reliability is as good as everything else.

    Disappointed.

I bought one of these but it died after 18 months. It was an expensive purchase and it did offer a fairly seamless operation with my other apple products. Value for money has to be just 1 star. There are cheaper alternatives these days. The other limitation I found is that this does not grow with your needs and once you have out grown the internal storage, then you need to purchase an external drive, which then makes your time capsule obsolete. Given that storage capacities grow so quickly, it makes the time capsule a short term backup solution.

    Do not buy

    • Written by from Chesham

A total wast of time and money, do not buy. It does not work correctly. With products like this Apple will go the way of BlackBerry and rightly so!!

Like others, ONLY last a year

    • Written by from Gerrards Cross

The biggest problem of this product is internal Power Supply.
Like many of others, power died after 13month of use.
    Very disappointed.

    Good while it is alive!

    • Written by from Hellerup

This is an excellent product, for 18 months......
I have just lost my second TC in less than two years. An backup device should basically last a lifetime, why would you bother having one if it didn't. Sorry Apple, this is your worst product today and these problems can't be new, so i am very disappointed to see that the problems still occur on newer TC's.

If you want a silent network HD this is the boy!

    • Written by from Peterborough

Networking fine. Can replace a BT infinity wireless hub (just plug it in using the red cable and use username you'll have to do a search on internet for this I'm not allowed to publish it).
The best bit for me is that the backup is silent. No other external HD I've had is this quiet. That alone get it 5 stars from me.

My Time Capsule died after 2.5 years

    • Written by from RICHMOND

Like many of the posts I am one of the unhappy many whose Time Capsule has just died, but it did take 2.5 years, so I guess compared to everyone else I am one of the luckier ones. Fortunately, I never had to make a restore as my Mac's have proved to have longer life than the back up device, which is perverse. I hadn't realised, but be warned if you find you have to keep powering on and off your TM, to keep it working then you have just weeks left to go before it dies.

    a pain

    • Written by from London

Why would one buy a wireless router/storage combination for 250£? There's one good reason, that in my eyes justified it: Ease of use.

I wanted a back-up solution that works automatically, for multiple devices and with time machine. Most importantly I wanted to set it up once (with 'one click') and then not need to invest any further time or effort.

This didn't work at all. We have this thing since a couple of days and already it's annoying me more than our cheap Netgear router ever did. I still don't know what's the matter exactly - maybe there's a problem with assigning a new IP when the modem was disconnected due to a fault or something. All I know is that once in a while everything stops working and I need to go through a tedious Airport utility procedure of reconfiguring everything (the same way it was before) for it to run again.

I don't have a clue of network technology and the point is I don't want to have. If you feel the same, Time Capsule isn't for you. If on the other hand you are competent enough to see through the technical details (and fix them) there are probably much cheaper solutions out there for you.

In my view the biggest general plus of apple was usability. This clearly doesn't apply to time machine.

Not worthy of the Apple logo that it carries

    • Written by from Leeds

Same as everybody else! Power supply failure, got home one day and it was completely dead. This product is not fit for purpose, how can the device designed to rescue your data should your computer die, fail before your computer?!

    Not what I expected ......

    • Written by from Kibæk

Great for seamless backup, BUT DON'T BUY this item if you need to free some space on your Mac or other devices or if you need to boost your wifi; Time capsule are only for back up and the dual band wifi are not better than standard wireless routers.....

    Lovely while it works

    • Written by from MORETON-IN-MARSH

YUP I buy all the stuff in the 5 star reviews. It looks lovely, is a doddle to set up etc. but what use is that if the thing collapses after the obligatory 18 months of gentle and loving use? I now have a pretty lump of worthless plastic.

One of the reviews even said "it was so easy to restore from, that even when this collapses I will buy another one" Err it is time machine that makes it easy to restore from or even any disc using something like Chronosync, is dead easy to restore from.

For the same money, I can buy 4TB and a decent wireless access point that will outlast all of this.

Sorry Apple, love your Computers, not so sure about your OS direction but if you want to charge premium prices please at least provide premium quality not just pretty frippery

    It works and is easy!

    • Written by from Farnham

This is my second time capsule. First one died after 2 years. However my hard drive suddenly died on my Mac and after replacing the hard drive I was able to restore my Mac from the time capsule in about an hour. A lifetime of photos, music, my business - the lot!
So for me it was worth every penny, and when it dies again - in about another 18 months - I will probably get another as it was soooo easy to restore.

Third time lucky? I doubt it.

    • Written by from Winchester

I'm on my third, both others lasting 18 mths, does that make me stupid? Maybe. I'm not sure if I like the Apple's mantra- we wouldn't make it if it was no good. Are people doing things in the background to fix this whilst showing public denial?

You can get Applecare on an Apple TV but not on a Time Capsule, what does that tell you?

Look out for my next review in 18 months...

    Back up nightmare

    • Written by from SAFFRON WALDEN

I believe apple call it the automatic no hassle back up. WELL let me tell you I have used this on my 17 inch Lion os, I have used mac's since the days of the G4 so I am not new to macs. BUT when i recieved my new 17 inch and tried to migrate all my info from my old laptop via time machine I have encountered various problems to the point I have lost all info stored on the capsule...all my baby photos of my son ( now 8 ) all m y music ( i am a dj of 30 odd years this cannot be replaced either ) all my documents and books of my business ( quotes for my plastering business ). This has mucked me royally in every way. I can only put it down to the Lion os system . I have talked to mac technicians over the phone for nearly 3 hours and now am going to see the genius bar as the phone help have given up as the error code 6584 is coming up.

Automatic gliche free back ups........MY BUM....BEWARE

PS if i could give it no stars i would

    Dead TC

    • Written by from Höllviken

After 2 years of excellent back-uping work my TC started to sound like it was screaming for lubricant. 2 weeks later it died after trying to upgrade software. I will by an AirPort Extreme and do my backing up to an external HD connected to the computer since I realized that you cannot use Time machine for backing up on an air-port disc.
