18 months of happy use, now no light, in fact nothing at all. Seems TC's are in the habit of expiring after a while - beware !!

My 1GB TM died after 18 month. I loved it. I didn't think about backups at all, it just worked. But I have had two TMs now, and they both died after about 18 month. That is not good enough.

    Not up to Apple's standards

On paper this should be a great piece of kit but sadly the reality is it just doesn't work well for me.

I find that sometimes I can correctly access my attached USB hard drive other times not without enabling guest access. Although, I have a background in networks I have no idea why this is so intermittent.

The 5Ghz networking is flakey. I can only get my Mac to connect at the higher speed when I separate the two networks and force it to 5Ghz and am in really close proximity.

So far Time Machine hasn't stopped working but I don't really trust it on my current Time Capsule.

Then there are other little annoyances like the Airport Utility constantly trying to force you to use it's wizard instead of manual setup not matter how many times to select manual, this wouldn't be so bad if the wizard was smart enough to do the right thing but IMHO it's not.

I'm sorry but I would not recommend this in its current form.
(As an aside, this should really have mirroring at least if it's a backup solution but then again you know it doesn't when you buy it.)

    Not what I expected ......

Great for seamless backup, BUT DON'T BUY this item if you need to free some space on your Mac or other devices or if you need to boost your wifi; Time capsule are only for back up and the dual band wifi are not better than standard wireless routers.....

I bought one of these but it died after 18 months. It was an expensive purchase and it did offer a fairly seamless operation with my other apple products. Value for money has to be just 1 star. There are cheaper alternatives these days. The other limitation I found is that this does not grow with your needs and once you have out grown the internal storage, then you need to purchase an external drive, which then makes your time capsule obsolete. Given that storage capacities grow so quickly, it makes the time capsule a short term backup solution.

    Good.. until it failed

    Worked brilliantly until...

    1) Apple upgraded the computer software and then it failed to work with the time capsule until a much later upgrade

    2) The power failed. This is a blatant issue, I've read it time and again and despite them saying it was fixed prior to my model, it still failed and that's it - dead.

Considering you're paying over the odds to get what you expect to be a superior product I was very dissappointed. Having said that, while it lasted it did the job seemlessly behind the scenes as you'd hope.

    Not the usual Apple slickness

Initially I connected this to my existing wireless router by ethernet, and used it in bridge mode with all the wifi transmitter off. This worked for a couple of days, but then had intermittent problems with the network disk not showing up on computers. The only way I could get it to work reliably was to use it as the wireless access point as well, and disable wifi on my existing router. Which is fine, except if the Time Capsule fails I will lose wifi connectivity as well. And on principle, it is supposed to work both ways.

Connecting a USB disk into it and sharing it is temporamental (could be the USB disk to be fair, but had no problems connected directly to the computer.)

The Airport Utility has some quirks - I have found certain settings only stick if you change them in a certain order.

If when you format a disk, you change the volume name to something other than the default "data", it has a nasty habit of reverting the name back to "data" again unexpectedly. This means the computers then have to be pointed to a different backup volume.

These kinds of issues I expect from cheaper brands. The device essentially works, but paying premium prices for Apple brand, I expect a more polished product.
