    Fine, while it lasts...

The good: Set-up is easy. Looks pretty.

The bad: In spite of allegedly server grade components, the inbuilt power supply is third rate junk. Mine failed after 19 months of light usage. This is apparently a known fault of the first generation Time Capsules. According to the Apple Store I got mine from the problem had been fixed on the version I have. I beg to differ. As a result they wouldn't replace mine.

If you absolutely must have a Time Capsule make sure you have Apple Care too. I'd recommend an external hard-drive and a decent quality router as a more reliable and flexible alternative.

    Very disappointed.

The TimeCapsule is a great product for backing-up your Mac. It is easy to set up, has a powerful router and great design.

And to all of the negative reviews made on the old Time Capsules, on which the power supplies died:

Be aware that this is the 4th generation Time Capsule, you are making a review on. Not the 1st, 2nd or 3rd. I can understand your disappointment. But your reviews are misleading, as this is a much newer version, which does not neccessarily suffer from similar issues.

Its an Airport Extreme with a built-in hard drive. Same easy setup, same reliability and easy backup.
You could get cheaper by using a NAS or a USB drive but my experience wasn't good with that as the external drive (a WD World edition) didn't respond sometimes and missed backups. So I sold both and got this for just a little more.
The other plus with this is the drive is totally silent.

One cautionary note: Despite the "server grade" claim, it isn't. If you are after a backup solution for a business, buy a raid-based system but this is an ideal home backup.

Two of these have now died on me (first purchased in 2008 failed Jan 2010, replaced Jan 2010 failed Sept 2011) in my opinion this cant be relied upon as a credible product. They appear to have a life span of 18 months which is hopeless. The idea is great, the execution is elegant, it is so easy to set up but ultimately it is flawed. Avoid it.

I've purchased three of these products and two of them have failed with the loss of all data.

It's a shame. but it's a risky product to use as a backup.

I like to keep an open mind and some would say foolishly I trust Apple products to do what they say. I read some of the negative reviews on the TC but thought surely Apple would have taken this on board and will deal with it.

    Sadly No.

My Time Capsual has died rught out of the blue and being just over twelve months old hey guess what, Sorry sir you should have taken out the extended warranty, bye...

I bought this as part of a £2000 order and I am not impressed.

YUP I buy all the stuff in the 5 star reviews. It looks lovely, is a doddle to set up etc. but what use is that if the thing collapses after the obligatory 18 months of gentle and loving use? I now have a pretty lump of worthless plastic.

One of the reviews even said "it was so easy to restore from, that even when this collapses I will buy another one" Err it is time machine that makes it easy to restore from or even any disc using something like Chronosync, is dead easy to restore from.

For the same money, I can buy 4TB and a decent wireless access point that will outlast all of this.

Sorry Apple, love your Computers, not so sure about your OS direction but if you want to charge premium prices please at least provide premium quality not just pretty frippery

The biggest problem of this product is internal Power Supply.
Like many of others, power died after 13month of use.
    Very disappointed.

This is an excellent product, for 18 months......
I have just lost my second TC in less than two years. An backup device should basically last a lifetime, why would you bother having one if it didn't. Sorry Apple, this is your worst product today and these problems can't be new, so i am very disappointed to see that the problems still occur on newer TC's.

Same as everybody else! Power supply failure, got home one day and it was completely dead. This product is not fit for purpose, how can the device designed to rescue your data should your computer die, fail before your computer?!

After reading reviews 2 years ago, I unfortunately decided to purchase a 1TB Time Capsule hoping mine would last. Easy to install and set up, worked great till last week. 2 years and 1 week.

I'm on my third, both others lasting 18 mths, does that make me stupid? Maybe. I'm not sure if I like the Apple's mantra- we wouldn't make it if it was no good. Are people doing things in the background to fix this whilst showing public denial?

You can get Applecare on an Apple TV but not on a Time Capsule, what does that tell you?

Look out for my next review in 18 months...

Was this useful? Third time lucky? I doubt it.

I read the reviews. I made the decision and purchased a Time Capsule. Everything worked perfectly, just like the all the product literature says. Then, today for no reason, it has turned itself off and will not turn on. The, by now, well documented fault I ignored when I bought it has come along. I'm so extremely disappointed.
The biggest problem with this is it works SO well that you're fooled into a false sense of security, then BANG! You're left with a nice looking plastic box...
    BAD APPLE!

    Avoid at all cost

Our 3rd Time Capsule has just packed in (as short shelf life as the other two - max 2 years), and it wasn't cheap.

Appalling since it's supposed to be a BACKUP solution that all our laptops have outlived.

We were seriously doubting whether to get another Time Capsule, but thought 3rd time lucky (or unlucky as it turns out).

Just save your money and prolong your life with 5 years by avoiding Time Capsule at all cost.

My TC just died after approximately 18 months of use. Not cool at all. An expensive product like the TC should be able to last more than this.

    Poor product

On paper a great product, in practice a very poor one. Not up to Apple's usual standards. I've owned Apple kit for 20 years and always been impressed. But with the Time Capsule I paid a high price and just like other reviewers on here got just one year of life.
