does exactly what it promises, with economy of scale

This delivers exactly what the box promises. A neat solution where one has (e.g.) one's mbp on one's not very large desk and wants to multi-task with the iPad 2 as screen 2. The iPad 2 fits in very snugly, with no sideways or backwards wiggle (i.e. crucial stability is delivered). The connection is easily lined up (i.e. the home button goes bang in the middle) and the iPad slots in effortlessly. The base is slightly rubberised so on one's slidey desk surface it grips perfectly. It takes minimal space to do a professional job. The only reason 4 not 5 stars is that a second port for sync-ing whilst charging would deliver the absolutely perfect configuration. Personally, I think the smart cover's big selling point is its extreme ease of on/off-ness, so I can see no reason to be woebegone to 'have' to take it off to use the dock!

very good product and a nice design however can be hard to find the 30 pin connecter when holding only the ipad and it is a but pricy for what you get would recommend to most but would suggest you ask to see/hold it in an apple store before you bye it.

    Several problems

1/ totally agree with smart cover and alignment problem
2/ my main dissapointment is that it cannot be placed in portrait position in which I like to use it especially for work and movies

    Equally disappointed

Sad, that in Apples usual near perfect designs, they don't accommodate the one thing that physically separates the first and second versions, something that costs 10% of the product itself.

Without the Smart Cover, and it fits fine, but it still feels like a design flaw to have to either remove, fold back or just leave the cover flapping undignified at the front.

Quite ridiculous !!! READ THE DETAIL CAREFULLY !!!

First, this dock DOES manage to hold the iPad at a sensible angle. The actual connection with the dock connector is a little hit and miss. Why ever Apple didn't take the opportunity to redesign this is beyond me.
However, the really BAD part is that you can't USB connect this AND charge at the same time!! On top of this the charge rate from an iMac only manages to charge the iPad VERY slowly. To charge at a decent rate you need to use the 10w adapter. A truly hopeless arrangement. Worst Apple design ever!

    Pretty Good

I like this dock because it seems very stable and accommodates the iPad 2 much more securely than the first generation dock for the iPad 1. The previous review about the dock being "huge" is true, but this also gives peace of mind as it is much more stable than the previous iPad original dock. Also, comments about it being difficult to align the iPad 2 are sometimes true if you don't make the effort to get the home button and 30 pin connector together.

There is nothing i don't like about this dock because i took the effort to make sure it worked properly.

Overall, this dock is very good because of its stability and ease of use because it is very well built and looks brilliant on my desk.

    Disappointing

Not really worth getting. Several faults in my opinion:

    - Does not accommodate iPad with the Smart Cover on
    - Pretty fiddly to line up iPad with connector
    - The dock is HUGE!
