I have two - and absolutely love them

    • Written by from Abingdon

I have a pair of these plugged into a MacBook Pro 15" Retina.

Although they can both plug into the laptop separately (the MBP has two Thunderbold 2 ports), I actually daisy chain them. This means that when I get home from work, I only need connect the combined single Thunderbolt/MagSafe cable to my laptop, and everything's good. The ethernet, USB devices, etc, all stay plugged into the monitors. This makes them, in effect, a docking station.

However, only four stars rather than five as they need updating. Feel free to drop the FireWire, Apple. But the USB really really should be USB3 by now. Oh, and they do get a bit warm.

The actual LCD itself is lovely. I suspect I won't replace these until retina displays of this size become practical and affordable, which could well be a few years away.

    Excellent Display

I've been pondering buying the Thunderbolt Display for six months, each time I have gone to buy it my girlfriend stopped me...until this weekend! Stating the obvious, it is expensive. I am working on my photographs on a regular basis and I have got tired to trying to do it on a 13" screen all the time. Having a 27" is an obvious difference. I am really happy with the resolution and clarity, everything works straight out of the box and as expected with Apple it's a doddle to use. I am now looking at upgrading my PC to have thunderbolt connectivity to use one monitor for both systems.

I know it doesn't have USB 3.0, this would be a big benefit, but overall it's not the end of the world, I've not used the Gigabit ethernet yet as I'm using wireless N anyway and it is more than fast enough, but I am confident that it works. Also people have commented that the speakers aren't great...I think they are very good, certainly a vast improvement over my MacBook Pro.

4* only because it doesn't have USB 3.0. An HDMI port would be appreciated so that it was more versatile too.

    USB 3.0 PLEASE

A great and beautiful piece of kit but it's about time it was upgraded to USB 3.0 ports. Even my new MacBook Air has them as does my iMac.

    Forget using your Apple Remote

You'd expect the 'docking station to your MacBook to have an infrared receiver..think again. Pretty freaking poor and annoying, especially considering its price.

Top Display (but why oh why no DVI?)

    • Written by from Glasgow

Cannot fault Apple's flagship display in terms of image quality and rock solid construction. Am running a 2011 Mac Mini into it via thunderbolt. The colours, saturation and response are second to none.

Apple have packed in fantastic connectivity options, but dropping some of those rear facing usb's in favour of a DVI port would surely have been a smart move? Aside from PC connectivity it would also have facilitated iPhone and iPad hook up via Apple's own DVI adapter.

Worth the money? For connoisseur image quality yes, but that lack of DVI is something to consider in terms of your other tech.

    Great display but minor niggles

    • Written by from Liverpool

Used with 13" MacBook Air the image quality is great. Only niggles are the MBA gets hot and fan noisy when watching streamed media and the Thunderbolt cable and power cable routing could be improved by fitting a 90 degree connector to the Thundebolt cable (as per MagSafe connector) . As it stand the cable tends to put a sideways strain on the MBA socket. Apart from that all is good but it should be perfect at this price and the inclusion of a 90 degree thunderbolt adaptor would make it perfect with all Apple devices.
