    Terrible Design MacAir Charger/Power Supply

    • Written by from Penarth

3rd time having to power supply in 3 years - Apple need to sort this problem out! I am considering not upgrading again with Apple because of this issue.

    AWFUL

I will now have to buy yet another charger for my MacBook Air, which will be my third charger in the space of two years. This may be one of the worst products I have ever purchesed, how is it a company like apple can have such innovative and groundbreaking success in computers, however fail to make a charger that doesn't break and lasts longer than a year?? Apple really REALLY need to take note and address this problem.

Save up now you'll be buying another one soon

The quality of Apple's power chargers seem to be getting worse and worse. My original charger from 2011 finally stopped working after the wire disintegrated from the power box - almost about acceptable for 3-4 years worth of use. Eight months in with the replacement and it is suffering the same fate. Why can't Apple make something a little more sturdy?

I would defiantly not recommend this product, however you have no choice but to buy it. If you want your laptop to work you will be forced to fork out another £65.00 for a pile of flimsily assembled junk which probably costed about $3 dollars to make.

    Disappointing

I've been very happy with all Apple products I've owned - apart from this charger. Although I've been careful not to put any strain on the cable where it attaches to the charger (since this has happened before), the rubber has now come apart, exposing the wires, making it completely unreliable after about 18 months of use.

    Extremely unreliable

The design is poor and the cord is subject to flexing and it breaks. On my third in four years. Don't understand why there's never been a design improvement. If you buy a Mac that needs one of these and you depend on it, but a replacement NOW! You'll need it soon enough.

    Awful

The cable completely severed from the powerpack after 1year of very moderate use. If you can find an alternative get it and save yourself some money.

    Failed for no reason

After just over a year the adapter began functioning intermittently and shortly afterwards failed altogether. Very expensive to replace. Functionality sacrificed to smart looks - it's enough to turn you against Apple!

Did you pay someone to design this charger??

    • Written by from Denniston

The charger i am using at the moment is my second in two years. The magnetic charger head falls off at the slightest touch. I feel like a loud noise would be enough to make it fall off.
I would rate it as the worst appliance i have ever bought.

Flawed design, ridiculous price, infuriating timewaster.

Now on my third MBA 2011 charger in 3.5 years.

I always use the protective arms, put the charger in a padded bag, and avoid unecessary stretching or twisting.

And it still frays at the connection point between the power block and cord.

Of course, the chap at the Genius Bar says that he's "owned the same one for six years, this is definitely a usage issue and not a design fault". Showing him this list of reviews didn't help matters.

    Anyway, utter rubbish from Apple.

    Awful design

    • Written by from Buckhurst Hill

I had this product for about 14 months and it no longer works. The awful design makes it inevitable to break, but why is it not being fixed? If this company is going to spend twice what it gains on technology to help the blind and deaf then surely the company can pay the small cost in comparison to fix the chargers. If you don't care about "the ROI" Mr.Cook then fix this issue immediately.

The first one in all fairness did last a few years but the most recent I have just purchased lasted just three weeks. Its way too expensive to have to constantly replace, if i had know this was going to be so costly I would have not bought my Mac air

    Very poor product

    • Written by from LONDON

I think anyone who has owned a Mac laptop knows by now that the power supplies are woeful. It is only a matter of time before the thin cable and sleeving starts to split and the wire gets exposed and shorts leaving you with a dead unit. You have to wonder, is this designed in obsolescence? With replace power supplies costing £65 each and with so many reviews of how poor quality the product I think people will be able to draw their own conclusions. Unfortunately we are all captive consumers as there is no real quality alternative, we just have to stump up £65 each time our power supplies fail. You could perhaps forgive Apple if it was an interim issue, but this type of power supply has been in production for a long time now....come on Apple, please step up and address this issue.

    Weak Cable

    • Written by from Boarstall

The fine cable of this device has disintigrated in several places and at the price it costs you seriously need to consider a new design or making it a cheaper product. It does not live up to your description

    Why is it so bad?

    • Written by from Haderslev

It makes no sense to me that these chargers breaks so easily, my first charger lasted 2.5 years which i guess is okay considering i brought it with me in my backpack every single day.. but the one i have now will soon break, and i have only had it for about a year.. it just frustrates me that i have to spent money on this (not very cheap product) when i plan to upgrade my computer in half a year :(( i even tried to be gentle with the power cord this time around..

    Maybe I'm lucky?

    • Written by from newton abbot

Had mine for 3 years this month and nothings gone wrong with it yet, the cable doesn't show signs of giving up anytime soon. I always think people are more likely to review when it's negative than when it's positive though, but I may just be one of the lucky few.

Long-term excellent durable if treated a certain way

    • Written by from London

This goes against the grain of reviews, but here's my experience. I have had three Apple white power bricks, each outlasting the laptop it came with (the weren't all 45W Magsafe – the first was the co-axial plug-in type with a white iBook, the second a 60W Magsafe with a Macbook and the current one a 45W Magsafe with an Air). I travel several days a week. I'd estimate I coil and uncoil the wire at least 10 times a week, several hundred or a thousand times a year, several thousand times in the time I've had the adapters.
But I always make sure I'm not allowing the wire to become twisted or strained. Where it emerges from the brick itself, I let it turn very gently through 90 degrees and then start wrapping the wire around the folding plastic 'ears', gently on the first lap and tightly thereafter. With each turn, I give the cable a twist with my thumb and forefinger to counteract the natural opposite twist it would otherwise get. And as I uncoil it I do the opposite. It doesn't take any time. Apple should put this in the instructions. It's the same way any sailor or trucker would coil up a rope, or gardener coil a hose, to stop it twisting and getting knotted and strained.

    Seriously???

    • Written by from Leighton Buzzard

I am now at the point where I have to buy the fourth charger for this Macbook air which is not even 3 years old.
The first one died within 3 months and was replaced under warranty, the second one died 18 months later and the third now needs replacing after less than 10 months of use.

How can you justify such a badly designed product at such a high price?
I was considering buying another Macbook Air for my son, I am now seriously reconsidering.

    This charger is pathetic.

    3 years is plenty

    • Written by from Epsom

Just had to replace my 3 year old unit that's travelled around the world several times, been used in the most unusual conditions. I can't count how many times the mag-safe feature has saved my MBA from flying off a desk, flight case, lap by popping off when yanked. In fact, I'd say those yanking out moments are where the cable gets the damage from. I'd rather replace that than the laptop.

Those people complaining about 1 year lifespan - what the heck are you doing to it?!?!?!?

The only reason I'm not giving it 5* is because the cables are a bit bent awkwardly out of the box. Yeah, stupid reason, but I like my cables coiled nice.
