Serious design flaw magsafe cable connection to charger

    • Written by from Enschede

I'm on my fourth charger for a 2010 mbp. The magsafe cable unravels at the connection to the charger, the cable is not strong enough and starts to unravel after about a year. I always take care of my electronics and am not using it harshly but I am on the move a lot. I had a few other brands of laptops none off which I've had to replace the charger for even once. I've tried using the clips to wrap the cable when storing but this seems to make the problem occur sooner. Apple doesn't seem to recognise this problem and does not respond even though in my own personal circle alone I know 6 people who are having the the exact same problem and the message boards are full of this problem.

Possibly the worst thing made by Apple

    • Written by from North Bergen

The infamous Apple charging cables strike again. I'm on my THIRD Macbook Pro charger, again because of the fraying in the same exact points time and time again by the terribly made cable. I don't mistreat my chargers, especially after the first one frayed and broke. The brick itself is a great piece of design, and I'm happy about that part. But unfortunately that's negated by the absolutely terrible quality of the cable that renders the entire thing useless if (and when) it goes out. It doesn't help that the price of the charger is very expensive for the quality you get, and I'm continuously denied a replacement in Apple stores, even though the damage is clearly by fault of design. If Apple focused on making their cables to the same quality as everything else they make, I'm sure these reviews would be massively different. Until then, these necessary evils will continue to be hated by the masses.

    Really really really really rubbish.

    • Written by from RAMSGATE

These products are so bad, not just normal bad either, I'm talking like the most serious ultra-bad you could ever think of. Think of that and then double it a bit, even then it's not really that close to just how bad these power supplies are.

At this moment in time, yet another of these has died on me and the product was only a couple of months old. My girlfriend is distraught and this has ruined our Christmas.

    Happy Xm0ss Apple.

    Very Poor

    • Written by from SAXMUNDHAM

Ive just purchased my third one of these in four years. They always come apart at the same point; where the mag safe end of the lead attaches to the transformer. They're not good enough, way too expensive and I'm bored of having to pay upwards of £65 to replace an entire unit, when it's just a cable and it's insulation that are the problem. Really bad, do something about it.

    Pathetic quality

    • Written by from Watlington

Considering that the MacBook Pro is hands-down the best, as well as the most expensive, laptop on the market, I find it absolutely inexcusable that the power adapter cord is such UTTER RUBBISH! I've had my current MacBook for less than three years now, and in that time I've gone through two adapters and my third one just started acting up so no doubt is on its last legs. As any MacBook user knows, the problem is most often that the magsafe plug separates from the cable, and given that the cable's other end is hard-wired to the adapter, one has no option but to throw the whole shebang away and buy a new one - and the blasted things cost upwards of £60 a pop! Apple -- you really need to sort this issue out, because it's seriously cheesing off your otherwise happy and loyal customers, and you're not doing yourselves any favours by pretending that there's no problem! :-(

    Appalling, should rebrand to Mag-unsafe

    • Written by from Barking

Another broken charger, same problem as usual. Cable deteriorated where it connects to the Macbook, leaving exposed wire and posing a potential fire risk. So many one star reviews speaks volumes! This was my first Macbook Pro and it will be my last.

Replacement 85w power adapter for 17" MacBook Pro (early 2008)

    • Written by from Epping

Having read the reviews below as to whether this power adapter was compatible with my Mac I was a little confused. My original power adapter has a "T" style connector and this one has the new style "inline" connector. To verify that it was the correct one I contacted Apple support via their chat support and they confirmed that it was. It arrived this morning and it fits the port and works perfectly. I agree with the post below that reads "buy with confidence" Hopefully this post will save others from having to spend lots of time checking it out.

    Cable keeps breaking

    • Written by from Farnham

For all the great designs apple have come with this one lets them down. Now on my third adaptor in 3 years. In 5 years my dell power adapter never failed once. And with all the known problems Apple still insist on selling all the parts together. I can see why they have completely lost their environmental ratings. Soon to lose a customer too.

It works, Its expensive and It could be better!

    • Written by from Erith

The part of the MagSafe cable where it connects to the Macbook is poor, the cable outer casing eventually wears out leaving exposed wires. This part of cable should have been made of a stronger material, or designed so that this part can be easily changed like you can with the Plugged section of cable on the adapter. £65 to buy a new adapter each time is too much, when you could have designed this to have the option of just replacing the part of the cable that is damaged at a cheaper cost to the consumer and also being more environmentally friendly as well.

    Just 18 months and dead

    • Written by from Ringwood

I generally consider Apple products reliable and robust. This power supply is rubbish. It's not hot (it's a cold winters day). Loud bang, big yellow flash. £65 down the drain. Days work lost waiting for new power supply.

My 8 year old Dell laptop is still on it's first power supply. In fact, I've never known a power supply fail before on anything.

    Embarrassingly bad apple product...

    • Written by from Norwich

Why has this issue not been addressed? I've been through two of these chargers already, and my girlfriend's has also stopped working. The cable appears to have melted at the end! Of course things are prone to wear and tear but come on!? Please — please — just sort it out Apple!

You would think that a charger that overheats and sets things on fire would be a design flaw that apple wouldn't overlook before deeming them suitable for sale.

    What to do now?

    • Written by from Rotherham

As I sit here writing this review my last 35 minutes of battery on my Mac book pro is about to die as my adapter has broken, just in the way that has been mentioned above (where the cable meets the adapter, the wire is exposed) And i can see from the reviews that this is a major issue, to spend £65 on a new one or not when it is obviously a design fault??? has anyone took them to the ombudsman over this design fault and danger to peoples lives? Are these the only adapters available? Lost as to what to do????

    JUNK JUNK JUNK JUNK

    • Written by from Havant

Absolute Junk, they last for less than 18 months, and what is clearly a design fault, the cable on leaving the transformer fails, in exactly the same place, having to get the fourth one in less than three years, luckily as I know how utterly rubbish they are and I have a spare one in my office for use in emergencies. Shame I had to drive an hour each way to charge my computer, but at least I'm not without one! And i'm normally an apple fanboy so hey ho!

Awful product - a disgrace to the Apple brand

    • Written by from Saltash

I am on my 4th magsafe adapter in 4 years. Every single one has suffered strain at the end where the thin wire meets the brick. Two of them have thrown sparks and come close to causing a fire. One has actually melted part of my carpet! Why the heck are Apple not doing anything about this?! I have power supplies from ancient games consoles that are still running and yet these overpriced pieces of junk die all the time. Poor show, Apple. Poor show.

I bought my MacBook Pro last year and today my charger was on fire!!! Didn't expect that specially from Apple! And is quite expensive buying a new one. Not so reliable when it comes to accessories! Disappointed with Apple.

    Appalling

    • Written by from Cardiff

If I could give it zero stars I would. Very poorly designed strain relief which is prone to fail (see the other reviews). When it does, if you are in warranty you are ok (but will have to wait about a week for an appointment with a "genius" to get a replacement). If you are out of warranty, they MAY offer you a £50 replacement.

Seriously Apple, this is the lowest rated of your products. It is unreliable and £70 for what amounts to an 18V power supply is simply outrageous. I have been an Apple user for almost 20 years and only recently things like this are beginning to make me rethink. Just sad really.

    Substandard.

    • Written by from NOTTINGHAM

Just about to purchase my fourth Magsafe power supply, they've all failed at the connector end, even if the plastic sheath is not broken the braid inside has worn and gone open-circuit. Really Apple, check out all the bad reviews from loyal Apple customers ( we have the following: iBook, MacBook, MacBook Pro, iPad Air and two iPhones) and address this major flaw.

    Really disappointed

    • Written by from Cobham

I'm beginning to feel that buying a Macbook Pro is the worst decision I've ever made! Have to buy an adapter for everything, and everything is so ridiculously over-priced. And on top of this, the items are simply not reliable!

Ive had my Macbook Pro nearly 2 years and I'm now on my 3rd adapter. What is so very very poor though is that so many others have written exactly the same and NOTHING has been done about it. Poor.

I'm going to buy Sony Vaio's from now on - so much better and cheaper than Apple products.
