    A bad joke

The recent upgrade to iOS 4.2 renders the camera connection kit useless. The maximum USB output has been reduced from 100ma to 20ma which isn't enough to drive this device.

I invested £500 on an iPad specifically to be able to review photos with clients at the end of a shoot. The fact that Apple has suddenly and without any warning stopped supporting the camera connection kit is appalling and leaves me with suddenly needing to find a grand or two for a laptop.

It's even worse that they are still selling this without informing anyone that it doesn't work anymore.

This whole fiasco is a joke and the people involved should be ashamed of themselves.

This product does work because it allows you to see the photos off your camera. But it does not work when you come to organise the imported photos. The photos you import are only saved as a standard name. This is not good if like us you have used the camera in more than one place. I would only recomend you buy this adaptor if you are a keen photographer and like to see your photos instantly.

I thought that this was an amazing product that worked on all my cameras. I was a bit cautious to buy it after reading so many negative reviews but went ahead with it anyway and am absolutely delighted with it.

This will only import a limited number of file types and will not allow export - beware, the shop assitant mis sold this as a USB reader it is not one as normal people understand it. Very expensive for a couple of bits of plastic. Apple needs to do better.....

    Does what it claims to

This product does exactly what it claims to do. Connect the phone USB part of the kit and you can easily transfer your photos directly from your camera (with the USB lead that came with the camera). I've tried with two Sony cybershots and it worked flawlessly. The other part of the kit works well with my SDHC 8GB Extreme card that I use in my Canon EOS 500D. It even transfers the RAW files that the camera produces, and you can easily view them. Well done, Apple.
The only reason that I give it 4 stars rather than 5 is because Apple missed a trick with the USB adapter. Yes they advertise it as for connecting to your camera directly, but it would have been even better if they allowed it to connect to USB sticks for file transfer (not just photos), or maybe even for printer connection (I haven't tried this, but presume it won't work). One other thing it would be great for if the functionality becomes available in iOS4.2, would be for connecting your iPhone 4 to use it as a webcam or such (internet video calls?).
In my mind the product does exactly what it claims to do, but if the extra USB functionality was present, then the iPad would be a netbook killer.

In short, if you want something to transfer photos from cameras or your iPhone 4, then this is the kit for you.

connected my Nikon D70 to my iPad today and instead of downloading my pictures, I got a message on my camera telling me that the data card is not formatted... somehow the exercise destroyed my pictures! Hope I can rescue them at home.... so be careful...

Bought this via the online store.... Does what it says imports via the sd card adapter and imports via the camera (Nikon D80) and that is with the Apple case installed that a previous user said there was not enough room for the adapter to go in!!!

I think this is very overpriced for what it is but that's Apple for you....

They come fitted with a small plastic protective cover over the plug to stop dirt getting into the contacts, don't loose them otherwise it might cost you a tenner to replace them knowing the cost of Apple spares ;-)

Try before you buy - power error

    • Written by from Stoke Poges

I was so excited about the thought of uploading my photo's to my iPad while I travel, rather than waiting to get home, but ....

This connection kit does not work with all camera's. I use a Nikon D70s with a Compact Flash Microdrive and an onboard USB type B connection. I each time I connect up the cable from the adapter to the camera, I get a warning message that the USB device drains too much power, my iPad camera connector is then disabled. Powering both the camera and iPad to 100% didn't help.

Out of frustration, I bought the simplest card reader that I could find. As soon as I put the micro drive in the slot, the power warning disables the camera connection kit, so I suspect the issue relates to camera's that use micro drives.

Unfortunately, I discovered the error 9,000 miles from home on a once-in-lifetime holiday, My iPad and camera connection kit arrived the day before we left, so no time to check the camera connected in advance. My best advice, if you are not sure, take your camera to an Apple store and try before you buy.

The ipad camera connection kit was the reason I purchased an ipad!

The camera connection kit is definitely a must have for all digital photographers! It’s easy to use and reasonably priced. In my mind this kit turns the ipad from a toy into a must have piece of photographic kit.

This is such a worthwhile outlay for your iPad. The way the iPad works with this makes photo management so easy! It lifts the iPad to another level but this is an understatement as the iPad and the camera connection kit perfectly complement each other.

It massively increases the usability of the iPad.

You are never going to find a better accessory for your iPad on cost/benefit ratio in my opinion!

    Great addition for travel photographers

    • Written by from London

24 of 26 people found this useful

If your camera uses an SD card and you travel a lot, then this accessory is a godsend. Importing to your iPad is easy, and lets you review all your pictures in the original format (just make sure you have the appropriate settings for this), thus freeing space on your card.
More importantly, that means that unless you need to edit your pictures on photoshop, you won't have to carry your heavy laptop with you anymore.
Thanks to its great screen and amazing battery, the iPad fits really perfectly as the photographer's best friend.

Now there are a few things that could (should) be improved:
1/ there should be a CF card reader, especially for professionals
2/ importing to the iPad should offer the option to arrange photos in the folder of your choice. The current set up (puts them in a last import folder) is ok but not ideal.
3/ exporting from the iPad is a little tedious, there should be an auto import (and not to iPhoto library!!) pop up when you plug in the iPad with new pictures on.

Other than that, it works really smoothly, and will make many photographers' life easier when moving around with heavy kits and backpacks.

For what the two gizmos do this is jolly expensive. But it does import photos from an SD card very quickly (far quicker than into iPhoto on my Mac) and it's a great way of being able to show friends/family photos on the bigger screen of the iPad more or less immediately after being taken. Although it imports the RAW files from my Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8 (it shows the JPG and RAW as a single file) when you try to import the RAW into iPhoto it says the format is unrecognised. But that's a problem with iPhoto, not this particular product. Added bonus: despite two or three initial warning messages from the iPad the USB adapter *does* let me connect a standard wired Apple Mac keyboard (the white with numeric version) to the iPad - works brilliantly. Well, like a real keyboard should do.

    This thing is huge!
It's far to large to stick out of the iPad. Why couldn't you this into the iPad apple!?
Further more it only supports SD Cards.

At £25 this is a complete rip off!

Sorry but this is not very good value. OK the USB adapter works fine and it does support a multicard reader, but as for the Apple card reader very limited use, far to few card choices, so this makes this kit expensive. Perhaps you could increase the range of cards that it can read. For people like myself with more than one make/type of camera, need the range to choose from. Try harder next time. iPad seems to be brilliant.

I was almost put off buying this connector, as I have an Olympus U tough, and previous reviewer says it does not work with this camera. Well mine arrived yesterday, and it does work with my camera!
Also transferred video clips from iPhone 4, to iPad, with great results.
    Worth the money.

Just got mine after waiting 3 weeks (July 2010). Disappointed really. It will easily take photos off my Sony T100 but I can't get it to import through the SD card adaptor so it's off to the Apple store for Tech advice. Also the device will not import jpgs from a memory stick nor will it take jpgs from my Blackberry Storm Just says Device not supported (for Blackberry, SD Card and Memory Stick). Therefore a bit overpriced for this accessory IMHO.

Camera connection kit and Olympus Tough 3000

I bought one of the connector kits and the card reader works well, but it will not work via USB and the Olympus Tough 3000. I have contacted Olympus Europe and they say the camera complies with the relevant USB standards, so perhaps the Apple kit may not?

My SD card reader couldn't easily be connected to the iPad through the gap in the Apple case. I managed to get one SD card transferred, but since then it has totally died on me. I'll have to send it back and wait for a replacement. This isn't the quality you expect of Apple.

I got this kit to allow me to view images on a bigger screen whilst out and about.
The SD card reader works really well and is very fast. A superb little reader. It's a shame it is only available for SD cards at the moment, maybe more adapters for CF, MS and other widely used types will be released later.
The USB connector has been a bit of a failure so far. I have cameras from Nikon, Sony, Panasonic and Canon and so far only one has connected. The rest all come up with unsupported device messages. It seems it will only be recognised if the USB port on the camera goes 'directly' to the memory card and not if it has to go through any interim systems that look as if they require drivers (even if they don't).
