I’ve now had three break and always the same thing as what pretty much everyone on here has been saying. The longest i’ve had one last is about 6 months and at £50 a pop its an absolute joke. Put it this way I was very displeased to have to give this product one star. It deserves none.

    Absolute rubbish

The charger that came with my £800 MacBook broke after about 18 months. Apple will not replace it for free. I know this is outside of the warranty, but I think it is fair to expect something that costs that much money to work for longer than that. The charger that came with a Sony Vaio which I got almost 6 years ago, and which was much cheaper still works. The magsafe connector is poorly designed, it has inadequate strain relief, causing the wires to fray, breaking the connections and shorting them to the metal case. This also causes a potential fire hazard. Get your act together Apple...

Have you checked the Fuse in the plug?

I've had my MacBook since 2008 and have never had a problem with the power supply till this morning! There was no life in it at all, I have always taken great care of the wires but gave them a wiggle just in case, nothing! I flapped as I use it for work and looked on line and found all these bad reviews and thought, great I'll need to go and get a new one! Then I thought I would just try a new fuse in the plug just in case as I know that when plugging into certain extension sockets it has popped once or twice. I am happy to say that it worked, that's all it needed was a new 3amp fuse! sometimes its the simplest things we forget about. So it's worth trying in a new fuse next time before you think about going straight out to buy a new one, or at least if it still doesn't work you can then rule it out as being a part of the problem - Hope that helps someone!

I bought my Macbook Pro in August 2010, and it is now starting to suffer with connectivity problems when plugged in so that the cable is directed away from the keyboard. I shall be getting a replacement soon, but I have to say I am extremely dissatisfied in the lifespan of the product.

    MacBook Charger overheating

Im now reluctantly having to buy my next overpriced charger(considering the unreliability of them) . My last one was changed under warranty. I can't believe how hot the second charger got and I'm really not happy about the safety aspect of these items. I would have expected a safety recall because of this. If it wasn't for the fact the macbook was very expensive I would now be looking for an alternative. I love the Apple stuff but this particular worry does let the company down.

    Fuse

So, there's a fuse in the plug of the adapter. What I'd like to know is why there is a fuse there if the stupid thing just keeps popping anyways? I've been told that the power adapters keep popping because "they are electrical devices and can't compensate for changes in power." That's what a FUSE is for; to pop the fuse before it pops the device.

    If I'm honest, pretty poor.

I own the newest white MacBook, and have done so since around June. At first I thought the charger was odd, as it was different from my friends' older T-shaped ones, but I got used to it. Over the past few days, only having had the product for around 6 months, the magnetic end which connects directly into my laptop has burnt out, to the extent that I cannot use it any longer. The plastic inside has melted and rusted around the prongs. I am, to say the least, exceedingly disappointed.

This was of ridiculous price to start. After this they are weak and flimsy and easily broken. I am both appalled and disgusted by this.

When I have to replace this thing. The wires are now exposed and after less then a year of use. For something that's almost £70 I'd expect it to have a longer lifespan.

    Terrible product

I have had my macbook for three years and this is now my 5th charger. What a joke!!! The first few times it just stopped charging I would have to move the wire around to get a charge but this time the plastic has melted and the wires are exposed only had this last one 4 months.
The only positive is that as they break in less than a year it is always covered by the receipt so I do not have to pay for a new one.

Terrible product I wish there was a 0 star rating as it is not worth a 1.

I have had to replace this product 4 times!!!! 4!!!! Are u kidding me? I'm a full time student, I can't deal with the outrageous cost of a charger that is just going to fail within another 2 months. All of these people writing reviews are right! It's a flawed design, and I'm sure you guys could care less about your customers. I have just missed a Paper because of this charger..... I thought if I invested 1000 dollars in a MacBook pro it would actually be worth it.
I am VERY dissatisfied with my purchase thus far...

    Low quality design

    • Written by from London

16 of 16 people found this useful

Identical problems to so many other MacBook users:

Cable wear where it joins the 'brick' - low quality design means the cable at that end simply can't offer the flexibility it ought to.

    Overheating of the 'brick'.

Loss of connectivity between the MacBook and the Magsafe connector, meaning charging gets interrupted.

The problem is that there is no alternative to Apple's own charger. If, like me, you already own a MacBook (and if you're reading this chances are you do), then it seems you're stuffed. For the same reason presumably - i.e. a captive market - a new charger is so expensive compared to similar devices for non-Apple products.

If you don't yet own a MacBook, well, the sheer number of 1 star reviews tells its own story, as does the complete absence of a response from Apple. Something to consider if weighing up whether to buy Apple.

MagSafe - Failed again! Fix this now Apple!

Firstly let me say that I love Apple products. I have had three iphones, I'm a registered iphone developer and my MacBook is one of the nicest things I own.
After less than 18 months of use the original MagSafe that came with my MacBook failed. I loved my Apple products so much that I paid for a new one to get my machine working again.
The new MagSafe was of the new design.
After just one more year the new MagSafe has failed.
I have used PCs for more than 20 years, generally they are much lower quality than the Macs. However, I have only ever had one power supply failure. MagSafe is a great design concept, but let down by poor execution.
Apple, you need to fix this now.

I'm on my second Magsafe PSU of this year.

My first one remained live even when disconnected from the macbook and my current one is now presenting with exposed wires....both high risk for burning your lovely home or office down! (I wonder if it would take a libel case in relation to this against Apple for them to improve this Apple exclusive product?)

If I could purchase the PSU from another supplier, I would as I am sure that another company would have sense to look at the common errors that occur with this product.

I even ensured with my second PSU, that I did not wrap the wiring around the 'feet' to try and reduce any potential problems, but still the PSU has failed to last and therefore ceases to be 'fit for purpose'.

Make sure you handle with oven mitts!!! I have a bubbling, blistering burn on my leg from this charger. On the plus side, it charges my computer really well (thus the reason I gave it an extra star for charging so well... and i like that its magnetic). But seriously, be careful about how hot it gets. Wish I could show you my oozing burn from this bad boy.

I'm giving one star as none or negative is not available. Great idea but executed poorly. Third one in two years. Cables snap like straws. Last one had more stiff cable. The only difference was that is was more annoying. USE THICKER CABLE APPLE! It doesn't to be a "looker" it needs to be a working horse! OR make a battery top up wireless? Induction....?
