    Great for music streaming

    • Written by from KOKKOLA

Bought this just to stream music from Spotify from my iPad. It has worked flawlessly since I got it for about a month ago. The sound quality is excellent. I cannot hear a difference in sound quality compared to CD on my relatively high end (2000€) stereo system when using spotify on "extreme" sound quality.

    Flashing amber!

    • Written by from Saxmundham

I found this device almost impossible to set up. I bought 2 and returned them as being defective until I finally managed to set one up. The instructions supplied are totally inadequate to explaIn what to do when the device refuses to initiate and the dreaded amber light flashes. I have an AirPort Extreme base station and another, earlier generation, Express (which set up no problem incidentally!), this Express was to be for streaming music / printer duties.

When the amber flashed I tried everything, disconnecting the firewall, re-setting - nothing worked, the device wasn't detected by Airport Utility. Eventually I Googled the problem and found a solution: connect the misbehaving device directly into my PC via the ethernet port and conduct the set-up via Airport Utility that way. Instant success! Why doesn't the documentation supply that advice?

Now that it's set up, the Express is working fine as a music streamer but it has caused a lot of needless anxiety. Another thing is that the manual refers you to apple.com for support which takes you to the US site which is of no use whatsoever to UK punters.

I hope my experience is of help to future buyers who may experience similar problems.

    Easy to extend network

    • Written by from DIDCOT

Have a wired network and a wireless network. One building is out of range of wireless. In that building I used the WAN socket to plug this in to the wired ethernet, plugged the computer into the LAN socket, and bingo - wired connection OK and my wireless network has been extended to that building. It all set itself up automatically. Could not be simpler.

    Good Device

    • Written by from Bradford

Bought this to replace the router function of my virgin super hub. Easy to setup through my iMac, took literally a few minutes. Solved the constant wifi drops from the VM Superhub. Overall great little device.

Cons: Bit pricey and also wireless signal not extremely strong for even my 2 Bed Apartment, but enough for me to use in lounge.

Even my wife could set it up!

    • Written by from ABERDEEN

That sounds terribly sexist but my wife is a technophobe and still manage to set this up to extend a neighbours wifi (with permission!) into her father's house while she was looking after it while he was in hospital.
Now, instead of having to sit in one particular room, she has wifi throughout the house.
Great product. I use a last gen. one for travelling (for the rare occasions hotels don't have wireless.

A breeze to set up and connect

    • Written by from Derby

Firstly I work in IT (don’t judge me) but I am not a techy so I want something that basically just switches on and with the limited amount of effort get connected.

My Internet service provider is Virgin Media in the UK and I have the 30Mbps service. I have the Superhub (limited range etc) in modem mode as I wanted to extend the range with my own gear. I have previously run Netgear (still great products BTW) with a base unit and an extender which were fine but older units.

I had been considering Apple Airport products as everyone I speak to said they are very good and easy to set up but was struck on how expensive they seemed.

Well after buying an AirPort Extreme and an Express I don’t know why I had not done it sooner. This stuff is amazing. From connecting to the modem and setting up I was connected in 15 minutes with the Extreme as the base station and the Express as the extender. The Airport utility is very simple to use and there are even iOS versions.
Checking the Broadband speed anything from 28 to 31Mbps all of the time. We have 3 iPads, 2 iPhones, 1 Blackberry (yeah I know), a Windows 7 laptop, a Mac Mini and 2 Apple TV’s. All of them work seamlessly through the whole of the house and will even extend into the garden.

I did have an initial issue with the first Extreme I received and had to return it but the service I received from Apple was excellent. I generally buy direct from Apple even though I could get it cheaper elsewhere.

If like me you are not sure about what to buy and don’t want to be bogged down by technical details on how to set things up then look no further than the Airport products.

Airplay stutter with optical cable and extarnal DAC!

    • Written by from Egå

Don't buy this if you want use this with an external DAC (Digital to Audio Converter) Using airplay with normal audio cable is fine, but you would have to live with the limited sound of the airport's internal DAC. It appears that when it's used with optical cable to an external DAC (mine is a Dacmagic 100) the sound will stutter. This was NOT the case with the prior generation of Airport Express. Because my solely reason for buying this was for high quality airplay I will now try to return it to Apple or make them exchange it for the older model. For more on the problem: Search for "Airport Express (square) skips unbearably with Airplay" in Apple Support Communities.

    Airport to DAC

    • Written by from redditch

Great product for ease of use, easy to set up, good with music IF you just use the audio out. The sound is not bad, but not as good as an external DAC. So here is the problem Apple, try to use the optical out to a DAC and yes the sound quality is good, the signal breaks up though!

    Any help would be welcome

    At last 5 GHz!

    • Written by from Warwick

Even though I had 802.11n routers before I wasn't able to connect with my MacBook Pro in the 5 GHz band. Now, having purchased the AirPort Express I can confirm that the laptop is connecting without any problems and I'm getting 72 MBps in my BT Infinity broadband! My iPhone 4 is also connecting to the Airport all the time (previously it had refused connecting to the local WiFi on different occasions), and I can stream the music directly to my speakers! I am very happy abut this purchase!

Brilliant for streaming music to my old and fantastic stereo

    • Written by from London

Wow, what a huge gift. I have an old stereo I really like. I want to hook it up to stream music from my Mac and/or iPhone. Was concerned that it wouldn't work or that the sound quality would be less than what I hoped.
But it is WONDERFUL. Amazing. A beautiful tiny white box with a reassuring green light. Thought it would be complicated or that it would somehow interfere with my wireless network. But it's all better than I could have imagined. The sound quality is superb (bought a good quality cable to go to the AUX in the amplifier.
Airport express works with analogue and digital. It's wonderful. No need to get rid of that old stereo (if it's good). This is the easiest way to bring it into the 21st century.

    Disappointed

    • Written by from Rochester

Having set up 100's of Airport networks I would have thought ti would take a few minutes.
4 complete resets later I have finally got it playing nicely
However the Airprint feature doesn't work for me, The blurb says just plug the USB in and away you go.. Then if you read the very faint text and the bottom of the page (light grey on white) only compatible printers work!
Disappointed it wasn't clearer on the website

    4 and counting...

    • Written by from Bedford

These are brilliant. We have 4 and it is brilliant! You could never have anything this simple with Windows!! Even better is that in the bedroom we have a Tivo box, no power line adaptor needed! Plug ethernet cable from the box to the AirPort and hey presto! Tivo box on the network. In the study we have a printer connected, so easy and simple! If we had more rooms I would buy more, even better use your iPad (remote app) and control it all from one place, just have your mac turned on and you can access your music as well. Apple do know how to make it simple and easy!

Replaced Airport First Generation with Second Generation

    • Written by from Southport

I have replaced two Airport Express 1G with 2G. The speed of data transfer has noticeably increased on my iMac's 27" and to a lessors extent on the 21.5" iMac. The setting up was easy being completed in 2-3 minutes the stability of the connection appears to be better than with 1G with no need to restart the 2G overnight. The design of the product is much improved neat and very Apple. Having run speed tests before and after installation the speed has increased in downloads and uploads of data.

If you are using a lot of data this is a must have upgrade and worth while if you are experiencing and stability issues.
