    Horrible, do not bother

I got this monitor with a Macbook Pro thinking it'd be great like the 30" monitor Apple still sells. This one is just horrible. Many things:

    1. The gloss is really bad, you just can't use it for reading, development etc. Only good for movies.

    2. There is NO 'switch OFF' button!!!!!!!!!! I can't stress on this enough: WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO US APPLE!! I at times want to turn the monitor OFF at times without plugging the cable in and out each time, which is a horrible work around since all windows run around wild on the screen and gather to a single screen from all over the place. The monitor just cannot be turned off from anywhere. I really though this wasn't possible so I went to the Apple Store and spoke to a 'Genius' who basically had similar thoughts and said he didn't understand why Apple did this. You can't turn it off no matter what you do. You can't even dim it seperately. I like to turn the other monitor off at night when mrs is sleeping but this bright thing just can't be turned off.

    3. The monitor turns EXTREMELY HOT. So much hotter than the 30inch model which I still use every day. You could really slow cook a meal on this thing. Turns a nice cool room into a furnace pretty soon especially if there aren't too many windows.

    4. Again, you can't turn the darn thing off!

This is a great monitor that works well with my Mini and laptop alike. Good looking, the speakers/mic/camera are pretty good too and the discrete and powered USB slots really help tidy up a desk. I've no reflection issues, if the screen was set to dark setting and I had a window behind me then maybe.
The people writing negative reviews based on this not being good for pro-graphic works: what's this display called dummies!! It does what it says on the tin and does it well... expensive yes, but ultimately it will last and look good for a long time and the picture is excellent for the home computing 99.5% of buyers will be using it for.

    Great screen, but slightly flawed

The display on this screen is great. I have no reflection issues. However, the sound could be better and it doesn't like displaying games that run perfectly well on my MacBook Air.

Overall, it's transformed my work for the better and worth every penny!

I really cannot find fault with this monitor. There are some really great monitors out there and this is one of the best.

If you don't like glossy screens. That is your personal preference, which is fine, so go for something else. If you put your laptop or desktop somewhere other than next to the screen, then you may have an issue with the length of the connectors - but to be honest you will find that is an issue with most monitors. OK it doesn't have an off button, but when you shut down your Mac it switches itself off.

My company uses several different monitors at work. This is the first choice regardless of whether you are editing video, processing photos or preparing a research report. People will even get in 2 hours early to secure access.

I have given up fighting for access at work and bought my own for home use. It is worth every penny.

Great addition to my MacBook Pro

I read the other reviews and can't find the faults that others have mentioned. I think some people are expecting too much for their money. At the end of the day, if you buy apple you know your getting quality straight off and if you compare this screen to others in its class the price is comparable. I love it, the size is perfect, it looks stunning and i love the features of powering my MacBook Pro though it. The three USB ports on the back are a great asset for ext HDDs etc. The sound is a lot better than i expected. Yes its not a stereo but the sound is very full, clear and great quality. I use the monitor for an additional screen (not that i use the laptop screen now) a TV (via a tv tuner) watching movies and listening to music. When I think now how much it cost, it was worth every penny. Some people complain about glare, but they knew they were getting a glossy screen, why position it with a window behind them???

Gorgeous monitor but major issue with sound

    • Written by from Brennanstown Road

While this is an expensive monitor it is also a gorgeous piece of design and worth every penny, except for a major technical issue. My biggest complaint is that there is only one input - mini display port (MDP) - but as I only use it with a MacPro that is not really a problem for me at the moment.

This monitor has one major technical flaw which so far Apple has not commented on. Intermittently all sound coming from the built in speakers will stop working. When you use the volume up/down/mute buttons the on screen display lags behind your keypresses by a second or two - sound comes out of the speakers. The only sure fire fix seems to be to disconnect both the USB and MDP connections for 10-15 seconds.

Having spent a large amount of money on this monitor I'm very unhappy that there appears to be a general fault with it and Apple have not responded so far. When I called support they claimed to be unaware of any issues and went through the usual options - reboot, reset PRAM, none of which worked :(

You can read about the issue on the apple discussion forums - for some reason I cant like to the article here.

I'd give this monitor 5 stars if it didn't have this issue. With its high-res, glossy screen, built in speakers (when they work properly) and iSight its a fantastic piece of kit. Unfortunately it's let down by a technical flaw that can hopefully be resolved with a firmware update.

    Awful

The glossy screen is only good for watching movies and viewing pictures in bright colourful detail. It is no good for professional work where you need the screen to display brightness and saturation as close to the printed item as possible. We have also had to rearrange the desks so that no one is sitting with a window behind them due to the glare.

As for the cable length! How close do you think we're going to put our G5 to the monitor!!? I would defintely opt for a bigger, cheaper alternative with a matte display.

Glossy is not good for designers

If you are working with print design glossy is just not good enough. Colours may be slightly more saturated but you cant achieve this in print anyway so any supposed advantage of a glossy screen is in fact a disadvantage. Bring back the matte option!

I like the screen and the design. I have just sold my 24" to get this one. I work as a designer and photographer and find that it is good for my needs. There are just a few things I don't understand. The cable to the Mac Pro is too short and there are dust under the screen - just one but distracting.

    No on/off switch !

I went to the Apple store to buy this product to use alongside a Mini that would be on 24/7 as a media server, but would also serve as occasional DVD player etc. Was impressed by it - especially sound quality, but was floored by the absence of an on/off switch, instead it is driven solely by the Mac it is connected to. Maybe some complex settings on the Mini would prevent the screen turning on when it was purely in server mode, but I want simplicity, and don't understand why you would not include something as obvious as an on/off switch on this product.

    Stunning Display

This is a truly stunning display to look at, bright with vibrant colours. The built-in camera and microphone are useful, as are the USB connections. I don’t find the glossy finish a problem myself, but I can understand how it could be awkward depending on lighting.

I’d certainly recommend the Dr. Bott’s cable extensions if you are using the display with a Mac Pro. My display doesn’t sit far away, but I would not have been able to connect it with the cable length as it ships.

Otherwise I couldn’t be more pleased with this display.

    Glossy disaster

    • Written by from Ascot

110 of 148 people found this useful

Like so many others who use this as a professional tool, this is not even worth considering. I recently saw a friends 27' display and honestly couldn't see what I was doing. The room was darkened and I still had to move my head around to view areas of the screen. In my 20 design business I have never come across any professional that uses glossy screens to do their work. If Apple continue to have this stubborn marketing strategy then they will slowly see a large proportion of their market disappear - I for one will NEVER buy a glossy screen. What would it take to give us designers a paying option to upgrade to a professional matt screen ????

Just checking the reviews of this monitor and am very surprised. I don't normally write reviews, in fact I cannot actually recall ever writing one, but felt obliged to do so in order to give this beautiful piece of a kit a boost in the average ratings.

I guess it depends on what you need it for, personally, I sometimes work at home and sometimes in the office so prefer using my MacBook Pro at all times to ensure all my files are in one place. This monitor is such a perfect compliment to that. The screen is beautifully bright, and as with all Apple gear, the product design work is top notch and it looks absolutely stunning. The built in mic and speakers are pretty decent too, not good enough for loud music, but great for Skype on hands free.

The monitor can be used to charge the MacBook while in use which is a very handy extra, plus it has 3 USB slots on the back which is ideal - I use one for charging my iPhone, 1 for an external hard drive running Time Machine backups and 1 for my digital camera - ideal.

If you have a MacBook Pro, want a bigger screen and have a few quid - because to be fair, these monitors are very expensive - then just go out and treat yourself. You get what you pay for, and this thing is great.

I would definitely also recommend complimenting the purchase with the cordless magic mouse and cordless keyboard too. That's adding another 100 quid or so to the purchase, but your setup then will be a delight.

I absolutely love this, and it looks stunning on my glass desk with MacBook Pro, iPhone, cordless keyboard and mouse all connected up. If you're really in the market of treating yourself, I'd also recommend a G68 Orangebox chair which really is the cherry on the iced cake, an absolutely lovely chair way better the Herman Miller ones.

Anyway, to wrap up, if you've got the money to splash out and need a monitor, just go out and treat yourself, you won't be disappointed.

Review from someone who actually has one of these displays

    • Written by from Gorleston

Firstly: you cannot review something you have not used.

I have one of these and am very impressed with it.

The only possible negative point with the monitor is the length of the cable: for the price paid Apple really should have used a longer cable or included an extension in the box.

I use mine as a second display for my 27" Imac and still the cable is only just long enough to reach across my desk. As it was I bought an extension, and now everything is fine. The two together look very good too.

Reflection is not a problem if you site the screen properly, I spend all day EVERY day working with photographs and Photoshop and this screen is amazing for clarity, resolution and depth. I am 100% impressed with it and so very glad that I got one, having struggled with many other makes and models in the past.

So many giving reviews without actually having purchased.

It appears that a few individuals i.e. DW from Ingatestone and friends are giving their opinions of the 27inch monitor without actually having purchased and used it for a sustain period. You guys should be aware that this page is for actual reviews, and not opinions.

Also, after having shopped around for a comparable 27inch monitor, it turns out that the Apple product is reasonable priced and that most competitors are coming in at the same price or in some cases, even higher.

In case your wondering - yes I have actually brought this monitor.

Great display, none of the problems others have speculated on

It's not entirely clear, but PA from London seems to have written his review based on his impressions of the monitor without actually having bought one.

I bought one recently to sit alongside the 27" iMac I use, professionally, every day for programming and have to say it is great. Yes, it would be nicer if it was a little less glossy (hence only 4 stars) but the display is wonderful. Very precise and clear, the colours are bright and punchy and it's just as good for watching videos as for working on.

No problems with heat - the back is cool to the touch even after hours of use. This is LED backlit, after all, which generates far less heat than tungsten backlighting.

The only significant issue with it for me is that it sits a lot lower than the screen on the iMac. However, I have discovered that using a first-generation AppleTV lifts it to be almost exactly the same height :-)

Consumer display, avoid for serious pro work

    • Written by from Ingatestone

I support the previous review in all its conclusions and would add also that the glossy display pretty much rules it out for professional image or video work. They claim the glossy display gives deep blacks: it may do, but that also means those same blacks reflect horribly and make seeing your work difficult. Might be fine for watching DVDs or whatever, but it is not a serious tool for anyone using the likes of a Mac Pro for working on images.
