    Cracking display, good at everything.

    • Written by from Stranraer

Produces the best quality picture I have seen on any computer display. A joy to use either for serious work or watching Dr Who in HD on iplayer.

The unit is cool to the touch after running all day long. Eye strain has been greatly reduced over my past screen on an old Mac.

The good looking, easy clean, gloss display can reflect so you have to be careful of the lighting in the room you use the display in.

    Disappointed

First off I need to be clear here. I love Apple products, I think their fantastic.

A week ago I bought a 27" LED Display to link up to my early 2011 iMac as I do allot of video editing for a living. I was so happy with the display, and even though its not the cheapest monitor in the world, I did expect it to be the most reliable. I had this monitor for 1 week, and the screen went funny on me. I restarted it, and the same happened again. You couldn't see anything, and it took about 3 or 4 attempts of closing it down and starting it up for the screen to slowly go back to normal, and even then it wasn't 100% as you could still see problems. Now I even had Apple insurance on this, but I felt that my experience getting this display and using it to its full potential was let down. Mainly due to the fact that the product is expensive, you expected it to last allot longer than one week.

Maybe I got a bad one, and to be fair the Apple store offered to swap it, but I've been abit put off now. Maybe I'll wait till after Christmas, and try again.

Lack of 30" is an issue for Software Developer

I agree with PA from London in as much as that the loss of the resolution of the new monitors and gentleness to the eyes is a big disappointment.
For a software developer vertical pixel count and the fantastic anti-glare surface of the old 30" Cinema display is of far greater importance than the wide-screen glossy or latest anti=glare appearance of the latest monitors.
The old 30" inch monitor has a vertical resolution of 1600 allowing you to see that extra vital amount of source code and the image it produces is much more gentle on my eyes.
Unfortunately, software developers are not in the majority so I do not think this is going to change. I am not sure what I will do if my 30" monitor should ever break. I think Apple should do more for their software developers as they are vitally important to the future of any OS. There is a direct relationship between screen-size and a programmers productivity.
The new Monitors a great for watching movies, better than any TV out there!

I deliberated over these and Dell 2711 which I almost bought, but was put off by the talk of the grainy anti-glare coating. The ACD LED were replacements for a pair of 23" ACD ive been using almost every day for 5 years, which were excellent but starting to look dimmer than Id like!

The clarity, brightness and overall 'pop' of these screens is superb, as well as the substantial screen real estate compared to my previous 1920x1080 ACD. For me the glossiness is a non issue since I work in a room with no rear illumination or items that would reflect - when these are on, all I can see is what's on screen. However, with less optimal lighting conditions, I assume you would struggle a little - seems daft that Apple dont offer both gloss and matte versions. I am however enjoying the lack of grain/sparkle you get with coated glass.

Only reason i'm giving 4 stars is overall expense - I think they could be a tad cheaper! :]

I also installed a Radeon HD5770 in my early 2008 Mac pro to run them via Mini Display Port, and can also confirm that despite what it says on the kit for them, they do work with Macs prior to 2010!

The build and picture quality are out of this world. Issues people are having with the length of the cable have been remedied by the looks of things. The cable is now more than long enough to reach a tower sitting on the floor. The only feature this monitor is lacking is an IR receiver for the Apple remotes. Then it would be the perfect accompaniment for the Mac Pro.

I bought one of these with the late 2011 MBP. i had some trouble first using lion, but the display never did let me down, even when running bootcamp. however i noticed that i couldnt ultimately use the display as a docking station for my MBP because whenever the MBP was restarted with the display pluged in, in order to remove the MBP you would have to either put the mac book back to sleep of power off. i choose to power off because the transition between screens leaves all the programs that you have running, in the same size of the thunderbolt display, meaning you have to resize all the open apps.

appart from this, the sound quality is truly amazing, with very good base, no need to buy any external speakers as they are near to bose quality!

the HD camera is also very useful, when using webcam related software.

overall, very good and usefull monitor
    i hope this helps!.

My first THREE screens went back. First with a lump of polystyrene in the screen!!, Second loads of dust in the screen and the third one started clicking but caused by expansion and contraction of internals touching together which shouldn't have been rather than the audio issue mentioned a good few times . The fourth one is fine... Only 1 in 4 passed my QC checks, which I was a little disappointed with given it's price tag.

If all that hasn't put you off..

The glossy screen doesn't bother me, I make music, not visual so honestly don't find it a problem, although my cousin who's a photographer, said it would be absolutely useless for his purpose.

The cable - could certainly be longer. It has certainly restricted my set up, Mac Pro on floor under desk directly underneath screen is about as far as it goes.

Contrary to one persons review on here, you CAN turn the screen off/put it to sleep whilst leaving the computer on. Use the keyboard shortcut ctrl-shift-eject. Apparently that guy spoke to a Genius about this problem and the Genius agreed with him! Mmmmm??

As for heat, it doesn't get anywhere near as hot as any other screen or TV I've used previously. I have a 27"LCD TV, wall mounted next to the Apple LED and running off the same Mac Pro and the TV kicks out about 5 times more heat than the Apple unit.

All in all, now I've got a fault free one, I'm happy with this screen. Lovely bit of kit. Expensive, but it's got a little Apple on it... would you expect anything less.

Impossibly reflective screen, no use whatsoever. Not bad if you are a boxer; you'll be bobbing and weaving all day trying to avoid the reflections as you work.

Wow, glossy, vivid bright colours, stunning looks and made by Apple.

Let down by short 0.5 cable. There is not a extension lead made by Apple or third party supplier so don't buy unless you are prepared to have your machine very close to the monitor. Also let down by colour accuracy - you cannot use this monitor for matching press output.

If only Apple would produce an extension lead or adapter. If only Apple would produce a monitor of displaying 95-100% RGB accuracy.

If you're one of those people who can't stop looking at yourself in the mirror. Then this is the monitor for you!

Apple probably call 'Cinema', because it requires cinema conditions to view it properly.

Glossy screen aside (it's a personal preference depending on your usage needs), then this is pretty good. It really works well being seamless with any Mac due to the discrete, integrated, cabling.

However, a couple of issues. Firstly, the sound cuts-out too often (see kbase: TS3602); after a while can be rather annoying. Secondly, importantly it needs Thunderbolt, as likely most users using this are working with large file sizes, so will want to use new Thunderbolt devices when they come.
A further minor point here with Apple's direct store pricing (adding the recent VAT increase, turned this into 918 quid), where many other online suppliers are asking c.840 for this; this difference isn't small change. it's pretty unusual for Apple products, and I think most users would expect Apple's pricing to be fairer accordingly. *However* this price range is fairly GOOD compared to the competition at similar quality levels.

    Overall recommended.
Can't wait for Apple's screens with "larger resolution" &/or those big enough for "TV watching" (say, 35"+ screen sizes), lol! :-)

I am not a professional artist, so i am unsure about the comments regarding true to life colour, but I am a professional developer. Being able to run 4 or 5 Windows RDC sessions at the same time and in view is extremely useful and this monitor can do that and do it with a quality output. The docking station elements mean you can forget your power cable, the USB ports are handy although the monitor could do with a few more. Its a tad annoying not being able to plug a second machine in without buying another cable adaptor, but I have found I can live with that.

On balance I would recommend this monitor to anyone with a MAC Book Pro, Windows machines?, look else where.

The cables from the new 27 inch Cinema display are too short to reach my mac pro at a reasonable distance away, I have had to buy extension cables, also it's incompatibility with older macbook pro's is irritating.

This display is absolutely stunning. Fantastic. If you have been thinking of getting a monitor to use with your Macbook but have been put off by the price, then wait no more my friend! I eventually gave in and bought a 27" display last weekend and now wish I had bought it when they were introduced. It was easy to install and configure and what a difference it has made. Even the built-in speakers sound great. I look for reasons to go and use the Mac now just so I can use this gorgeous display. Easily five stars.

This monitor is fantastic and completes the perfect setup with MacBook Pro, Magic Mouse and extended flat keyboard. I use it primarily for programming but also do a lot of graphics and this is by far the best setup I've used for either purpose. Perhaps this marks me as an amateur rather than a professional, but I find the glossy screen exquisite and clear and have never had any problem with it apart from the occasional dropout for a second. My wife and I have three of these things between us (home and work in different cities) and I'm often tempted to buy another - working without one is no longer palattable.

Needed a display for Mac Mini. HDTV or Apple? Walked into a store that had a Sony LED HDTV and the Apple Cinema Display side-by-side, both connected to Mac Minis. Even with the Apple display 30% more expensive, there was no question over which I would get. Only wish there were HDMI ports, especially with HDMI from iPad now.

    Excellent Monitor

To clear up some of the other reviews on here, this monitor has been on for 6 hours now, and has not got hot at all, as mentioned in other reviews.

Also, the mini display cable is easily long enough to reach from the high shelf on my desk, to the mac pro on the floor. After reading another review here I ordered an extension too, which is totally unnecessary.

I don't believe the people that posted those reviews actually have this monitor.

Basically, all the problems mentioned here are false - other than the fact that this thing is really shiny. You need to check your working environment to make sure this is going to work for you.

It's just the same as the ipad, or macbook/pro glossy monitor - no worse. If you can use them in your environment, you can use this.

And it's worth it. The extra resolution is excellent. As a web designer, I now have code view alongside preview with full width on both windows.

It is expensive - there's no doubt - but you get what you pay for, and with applecare, I know this monitor is going to serve me well for years, so if you ask me, it's money well spent.

    Impressed… so far.

I recently purchased this monitor and am delighted with it. I spent a good deal of time wondering whether to get this or one of the equivalent Dell monitors, the U3011 in particular - with the aim being to replace my dual monitor setup with one larger monitor. Having (for various reasons, including price) opted for the Apple display I have no regrets (so far…!). But I would like to address a couple of points made by people reviewing this product.

    1. The reflective screen. If you're working in a brightly lit environment, or worse, one with a window with direct sunlight behind you; then I would imagine you would have a tough time using this screen. I work in a room with dimmed lighting, with no light shining directly on the monitor - and it's perfect. If you do work in a room with a bright light shining on your screen then you or your employer probably haven't given much thought to your working environment in the first place. Shame on you if it's a design studio :)

    2. Heat issues. I've read a lot of reviews where people claim that this monitor is prone (or should be prone) to overheating. Well, it may be that the model I purchased differs somehow to theirs, but this runs cooler than any of my previous monitors (heck, remember the days of CRT's?), and I run this thing all day long. It's connected to a Mac Pro, so it's not using the magsafe adaptor - which might be where it generates heat for other people when connected to (and therefore powering) their laptops.

    3. Colour and Contrast. I produce animation and video work for use online, not producing work for print, or for TV broadcast - both of which have very particular colour management requirements. If you were doing either of those you shouldn't even be here looking for monitors and should be looking for something from Eizo, with a nice big crazy hood over the top of it.

All in all I'm very pleased, so far.
However… if one day I decide I can only work with the sun on my back and every light I can find clustered over my shoulder, then I'll probably regret purchasing this excellent monitor.

    Best Screen Ever

I recently purchased an expensive Acer 24" display and at the time of purchase I was extremely pleased by its performance.

After a few weeks of use it started to encounter some problems which resulted in me taking it back to the shop. As opposed to getting a replacement, I asked for a refund which the shop kindly granted. As I was about to leave the store, I saw the 27" Apple Cinema Display and decided to use the money I had recieved back and get one.

As I own both a Macbook Pro and a Mac Mini (both of which have the mini display port), the Apple Cinema Display fits right into my environment and has to be the best screen i've ever owned. It blows the acer display right out the water in terms of both colour accuracy and resolution. The Cinema Display's Resolution is just out of this world and has really increased my productivity since buying. I would Recommend to anyone with money who can afford it, you won't regret your purchase!
