AirPort Express Base Station with 802.11n and AirTunes
Pretty good but could do so much more...

This is a very handy piece of kit for doing a few basic tasks. I use it on my existing network to allow me to play itunes music through my hifi. Combined with the free Iphone Remote app, its pretty good at what it does and amazingly easy to set up.
I have one gripe though... why doesn't it support the addition of a wired (USB or otherwise) hard drive? I refuse to spend £300 on a time capsule - its a rip off. Perhaps this is the reason or am I just being cynical?15 of 20 people found this useful

Okay but not quite what I was hoping for...

Not quite as seamless as you expect.... Device gets very hot and I wouldnt be happy leaving it switched on 24/7... I have lots of problems streaming music from my apple tv via airpot express to speakers in another room, sometimes it works and other times its "stop-start". My apple tv drops its wireless connection whenever this thing is on for a while and all in all its a bit of a hassle trying to work it all out.
Im sure some people have no problems, but I suspect many do...33 of 46 people found this useful

and extremely simple to setup. However, only a 3 star review as the price has risen from £65 (which was good value) to £80 (which is not so good value).

Good wireless range but no iPhone/iPod charging any more

The Airport Express is an excellent product overall, especially for use with iTunes.
I recently upgraded my router to Airport Extreme and found out that my old Airport Express's no longer worked with extending the wireless network. A clever way to get users to upgreade i presume.
I bought a new Airport extreme to use with the 'n' network, but found out that the new units will not charge iPhones etc from the USB port any more. A feature that older units had. This makes the new unit it a little less usable, especially for travelling, as you need an iPhone charger aswell, not just a cable.
A good product over all, but sad to see the powered USB port has gone.24 of 26 people found this useful

Good But Could Be Much Better!!!!

The product it self is great I love the fact that you can stream music direct to your stereo from your computer wirelessly and it's great for extending your network....basically it does exactly what it says on the tin.....if you can get it set up correctly. the manual is typically an apple manual ( click the button and follow on screen instructions) and to be honest in most cirumstances it really would be much better to have proper instructions with helpful pictures for normal people who don't have a big computer knowledge. Apple product's would then make me go wow instead of ooh how long is it going to take me to figure this bad boy out. sometimes it's a lot less stressfull just to go with one of the many competitors. so in conclusion if you have half a clue what your doing get one!!!. if not don't bother

Time-consuming.

As other have said, once this is set up it is great, however the troubleshooting support for the airport in the manual, and from apple is limited.
It took me a good 2 days of fumbling about with settings to get this thing to work, not like I had anything else to do.
I would recommend it as a product, but be wary of how complicated the set up can, and could, be.10 of 19 people found this useful

Had to go out and buy an Airport Extreme base stations to get it to work as wouldn't work with my previous Link-sys router wirelessly or via ethernet! Once had set up new airport extreme it worked a doddle, just used the Airport Utility and it worked straight away wirelessly. Sound quality is good, I'm sure if i bought some expensive cables i could get it sounding a bit better but now I'm just being pedantic. Still a great product, as long as it works with your router!

Good, but a pain to set up.

I bought this primarily for AirTunes, and this is really good once you've got it set up. It's nice to be able to sprawl out on the bed with my MacBook, playing my iTunes library over the stereo system.
But the thing was so annoying to setup, I can only give it 3 stars. It seemed to connect to my wireless network ok at first, and then found firmware update 7.1.3, which is where everything went bad! After installing this update, I could not get the device to connect to my wireless network at all - it seemed to think it had, but it could not be seen by Airport admin utility. After hours of resetting it etc, I just took it back to PC World where they replaced it and the new one is fine (without the firmware update!!!!).
Apple stuff no longer seems to "just work". :(15 of 23 people found this useful

Not quite what it says on the tin

I think with this product, we sit firmly in the middle of a good and a bad product. A few weeks ago we bought an AirPort Express and after much frustration got it to work and now, it streams Itunes to speakers in the living room and can be 'seen' by all the macs and lap top in the flat wirelessly, though admittedly the device is connected to our home hub by an ethernet cable, but it works brilliantly, so it was with no qualms of going out to buy another one in order to extend the network further around the flat. However, after even more frustration and having the new AirPort Express in the same position as the original one to try and set it up range wise that it still doesn't work, and will be winging it's way back to Regent Street for a replacement, i'll give them the benefit of the doubt that you do get the odd bad one in a batch. Watch this space!!!

Good but needs more detailed instructions
Written by DK from London

I currently have a 'n' base station and wanted to extend the network and add sound to a few rooms. In theory, easy, in reality not quite so. The extend network option and the configurations required should be simple but after a very long afternoon I can still not get the ISP to share across the entire network. iTunes and the wireless speakers are working great. Dynamic IPs, WDS and DHCP are things I thought I would not have to get my head around but it would appear that having some knowledge of networking due to the less than detailed instructions is required. This is an excellent bit of kit just not quite plug and play for the creation of more complex networks.
